  2. I want him to set the major league record for Grand Slams while down by 5 runs in which your team eventually loses.
  3. Gwreck wrote: I really don't care. I'm not going to stop disliking him, I'm not going to stop hoping this negatively affects the MFYs, and I'd still vote for him for the Hall of Fame. I continue to kind of like him personally. I'm hoping he hits 55 HR this season and the Yankees hit 80 as a team.
  4. Gwreck wrote: My understanding is that several teams retire numbers only for players elected to the Hall of Fame primarily for their accomplishments with that team. I see no good reason to depart from that standard. Piazza gets his number retired if (when) he gets into the HOF. Keith, Kranepool, Carter - they've all been elected to the Mets Hall of Fame. Particularly as that is now a great feature of Citi Field, they're getting an appropriate honor. I would put uniform number 8 back into circulation. I would also put 24 into circulation as well. Yes. Exactly. this isn't really tough. They're not giving out 31, clearly they'd just chosen to retire it when he gets into the HOF instead of "in front" of it. Either way. And I agree about 8 and 24. put 'em back out there. Give 24 to Mayberry this year or something, because you probably need to break the ice a little bit so you don't give it to some hotshot prospect with all that pressure.
  5. err, sellouts? Old-Timers Day for the Yankees last year was the 11th best home attendance game. The day they retired Torre and added plaques for Gossage, O'Neil, and Martinez was 10th. (Mets were 19th and 25th) The Yankees had 0 sellouts in 2014.

Editing is one of those things I always thought was like Umpiring - if you noticed it, it was bad. But when I walked out of the movie, I told my wife that I thought the editing was good, and its probably the first time I ever said that about any movie. And I can't explain why.I think it was the way they were able to keep the parallel stories separate; you always knew which time period was being portrayed, even when there was no subtitle to point it out. I did think it was an excellent film; I've seen a lot of good ones this year. I'd disagree then. I actually had trouble with the time periods at first, particularly the cops part. The first scenes were before I really knew what was going on so once I got into the story I sorta forgot about the cops and the breakin. felt like a jarring break of pace. And I'm not sure the young Turing stuff really added much to the picture. The whole pace of the movie felt a little plodding to me, though I was invested and interested since Turing is basically my wheelhouse. Would've liked more talk of algorithms and the geeky stuff behind building the machine.
  9. Will write some decent speeches for Jeb Bush..wait, not this guy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Castellanos A 28 year old guy who's barely sniffed the majors and hasn't really destroyed the Pacific Coast League? I'll wager he gets about 27 AB midsummer. 7 hits, 1 HR, 1 2B, 4 walks.
  10. seemed like a nice guy. was fast. Will be the aha! got you! answer to the question "Who was the last Met to lead the league in Stolen Bases?" for a while.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: Maybe, but an infield depth chart where the only backups are Tejada and the starting right fielder isn't very practicable. It leaves you with one guy backing up both second and short and nobody else. Cuddyer's versatility — an outfielder who can play infield — is a great asset, but I wouldn't want to build the roster around it. I mean, they had Eric Young the last two years, but they still carried two infield backups who were infielders first and foremost. I think one MI and one CI backup is pretty standard. there is often some overlap, but not always. The Mets actually went through a lot of last year with very few MI backups. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2014-fielding.shtml I mean, they used Murphy as the 3B most often besides Wright. and at second? It was Flores who wasn't always around and then Hererra who was just later on. 0 got a few games as the backup SS but it was mostly just Tejada and Flores, and just Tejada when Flores was down. Campbell got a cup of coffee everywhere except CF/P and C which he claims now to want to do, but he didn't really stick anywhere, particularly since he stopped hitting halfway through.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Yeah plus if were in a situation where we needed an everyday 3Bman, Campbell wouldn't be it. but that's DL talk. Herrera and Murphy to third?
  13. more gaps in his major league timeline than you're average Atlanta Braves' fan's mouth, for whom he actually started for in 2007 despite a 5.21 ERA. 284 IP over 8 seasons over 15 years. Calling it a flash in the pan. 18 IP, 14 K, 5 BB, 6.82 ERA.
  14. metsmarathon wrote: if not, it'll make more work for the commish, as he'll have to kick out anyone whose expired team is snapped up by some random dude, as i think happened last year. yeah. though that was kinda fun too.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: I realize he's J-Bone and he's made of teflon, but it's hard not to think of him as at least a little bit vulnerable here. Two private planes are out of commission? Who are you, Thurman Munson? How about pulling out a credit card and flying on a safe regulated commercial airliner like a human being? I realize he confiscates cameras and phones, but if Jeter wasn't fretting on the tarmac but was actually partying with strippers and forcing them all to eat cinnamon, it's only going take one non-compliant outlier with a timestamp on his photo to put him in a very tangible position. my coworker has a story that he supposedly heard from a friend of a friend he was hanging with (which makes me telling you what, third hand?) that that last part is pretty accurate. Well, it was something a little lighter in color than cinnamon.
  16. Edgy MD wrote: You don't think he'll make the team? That's some bold forecasting. Who breaks camp with his job? shouldn't that be reserved for his or her's forecast for fifteen? ;-) Someone they bring in last minute perhaps, or they roll with Niewuenhuis and den Dekker (And Tejada and Mayberry) and just shuttle Murphy and/or Flores to third if David needs a day off in April (they'll both say they won't do this and David also probably won't take a day off)
  17. cool nickname. Struggled in the second half. Struggled as a sub. Lots of small sample sized involved in that, however. I don't think he makes the team. I think he eventually gets DFAd for roster space. There's probably just one spot for him, as the CI backup bench guy, and I just think the Mets go elsewhere. Points for being able to play 3B which as a backup is a position that I hope gets a wee bit more time this year to rest a certain plays too hard while hurt guy, but I just don't think it's Soup. I'll peg him as a future National pickup though, not Dodgers.

  19. I had to go to a meeting and may have left some out. The Staten Island and Westchester papers have ocassionally had reps. Then there's the local Flushing Asian lady. Dunno if those count as 'beats' if it's just sporadic coverage. But then again, it might be regular coverage come August. This is who is on DiComo's public twitter list of beat writers:
  20. first time no new guys or gals in a while.
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Blown saves, huh? Sure. It'll be late July. The Mets just played three close games and the bullpen is tired. Collins uses Black with a 5-4 lead in the 7th and he gets the job done. Collins leaves him in to start the 8th and Howie Kendrick jacks a lead-off home run to tie the game. And while i'm making this prediction ridiculously specific.. It'll be July 23rd (they just swept Washington to take a .5 game lead in the division) at roughly 9:42:34pm. The home run will be one of 4 home runs all season by an opponent that wouldn't have been a home run in 2014 in that new section in RF. Kendrick will circle the bases in 14.2 seconds. The home run will travel 391 feet. The attendance will be 32,455 and the game-time temperature 82 degrees.
  22. Has one of those 'step up' years where he has a really good month and Collins rides him. Numbers pretty close to last years, just over more time. Few less walks. 59.2 IP, 54K, 28 BB, 2 SV, 1BS, 140 ERA+
  23. For things that don't really need their own thread but are interesting nonethless like this picture from "Ebbets Field Flannels Inc." on Facebook.
  24. please tell me said Spider-Man movie won't be another reboot. Tired of seeing the origin story.
  25. I think I missed that call-up entirely. only a few innings above A ball and he's 26. I'm predicting he might be a big candidate to be DFA'd for roster space and we never see him again.
