  1. The shot makes Cano look like a god come down to earth to play in the arena built for the gods, Yankee Stadium. It that's the effect you want, then yeah, it's a great shot. The pose and the angle make him look like Michelangelo's David, which is a very Yankee statue if you think about it--the classic underdog, except he's twenty feet tall and obviously meant to win.
  2. If Sandy just wants Ike off his hands, I'll take him. I might have to sell the car, but I don't use it much anyway.
  3. Yesterday I watched the 1967 edition of SNY's Mets Yearbook and grabbed these screen shots: For anyone who wants to track down the game these photos are from, all I can say is that Ron Swoboda was batting against a left-handed pitcher wearing a red cap and red sleeves, and the ball landed beyond the center fielder's reach, but didn't go over the wall. It looks like there are two games that could be. On April 23, Swoboda hit a two-triple to center off Chris Short of the Phillies. The centerfielder was Tony Gonzalez, and the Phillies won 10-6. And on July 2, Swoboda hit a double to center off Steve Carlton of the Cardinals. The centerfielder was Curt Flood, and the Cardinals won 3-1. If that's the Mets centerfielder in the first shot, and he's righthanded as he appears to be, that means it's Don Bosch in the April 23 game. Cleon played center in the July 2 game.
  4. Richie Hebner could do some digging for you.
  5. Does it count if I don't have a rebus? Dennis Martinez.
  6. There's only one problem with that McCovey story. Seaver never struck out McCovey with the bases loaded in the late innings. Or in the early innings either. In fact he struck him out with more than one runner on base exactly once. And I think that's the game he's talking about. It was on June 30, 1979. The Giants had runners on second and third with one out, and Seaver struck out McCovey swinging on a 3-2 pitch. Even with a base open, Seaver had to throw a strike; if he walked him, it would load the bases for Darrell Evans with still only one out. As it turned out, he retired Evans and went on to shut out the Giants on three hits. So all that stuff about worst case scenario and messing with McCovey by checking the runner on first--he just threw it in to make a better story. Nothing wrong with that. It's pretty funny, though, that he'd call it his all-time favorite moment in baseball.

  8. Maybe the scale was in kilograms and they forgot to convert. An honest mistake.
  9. How about Juan Berenguer, at a willowy 5'11", 215? I think he got fatter after the Mets, though, like Kevin Mitchell.
  10. *&^&$@!
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I know it's probably not the wisest move, but I'd kinda like to see Sandy drive up the market for Davis and Duda by signing Loney, thereby removing him as an option for the Brewers, the Rays, and whoever else. That evil plan would have a better chance of working if there weren't so many other first basemen available, as listed in a previous post. So maybe he should sign all of them, and then auction off the ones he doesn't want?
  12. The thing that puzzled me was the revelation that he didn't have a major league shortstop's arm. I know the standards in Japan aren't quite the same, but it's still odd that he would have a good defensive rep there. And even if you never got to see him in person, you could, you know, just look at the tape.
  13. You guys can keep taking your Jeter injections. When I'm on the verge of death, or just need a little help getting through the eighth inning, I take a dose of Paco Rodriguez.
  14. Non-Gold Glove outfielder Juan Lagares.
  15. Neutral. I want to say dislike, to counter some of the overhyping that's going on. But on merit, it's not that bad a deal.
  16. I haven't been so excited since the Ellis Valentine trade.

There's always a time to say yes. There's always a time to say no. I don't think Granderson is a hated enemy. Well, yeah, for the right price. I'm just afraid the right price is way below what they're going to pay. I don't hate him, not at all. I just don't think he's that good a player. At this point in his career he's got one asset, home run power. Sure, he'd still be an upgrade. But is he really the best option out there? I'm not suggesting anyone else, I'm just asking.
  18. The smartest person in the room doesn't sign Granderson.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: And frankly, he's just not that into you. We had some good times, me and Curtis. But it's time to move on. I don't even want to talk about me and Carlos.
  20. Please, no. He's just not that good. Certainly not anymore.
  21. Centerfield wrote: So the idea is to not have any shortstops in 2014? It could work. Wright or Murphy cheats toward second, depending on who's up, Lagares plays a little shallower, and you put a fourth outfielder out there for the deep balls. It's totally worth a try.

  24. I think it's fine. It's embarrassing, but in a good way. The one from the Yankees looks cheap and grandiose at the same time. Perfect.
