  1. i enjoyed it (shocking, i know). But they totally dispensed with the key emotional trauma that makes him spider-man... i.e., guilt. There is plenty of room for a friendly, neighborhood spider-man, all properly teenagery and such, but you can't divorce him from the reason he chose to be a hero. You don't have to dwell on it, or replay the uncle ben murder again, but some allusion to the emotional burden he carries, and the reason he's helping people instead of just wrestling for cash, is still necessary for a spider-man movie. And it's not here. That being said, the kid is good and Michael Keaton is terrific.
  2. Edgy MD wrote: Joel Schumacher has recently openly apologized for Batman Forever, including the nipple pouches. Yeah, it stunk, but I didn't find it particularly worse than the other three movies from that serial. And your inability to discern any qualitative difference between BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN (89), or even BATMAN RETURNS, is why you are the lone voice of dissent in this WONDER WOMAN lovefest.
  3. even her nipples are powerful. they require industrial-strength pouches.
  4. lovvvvvvvvvvvved DEADPOOL Funny, good action, Reynolds was terrific, and great opening credits. It proved there was a market for R-rated comic book movies, which paved the way for LOGAN.

My rankings of 102 superhero movies, selected based on the following criteria: * English language live-action feature films, * Released theatrically in the US after the publication of Action #1 (1938), * Based on a pre-existing US or UK comic-book or comic-strip superhero, and * Grouped into categories (in tiers of 12 films each), in descending order. 6. Saw it last night with the family. My kids don't agree on anything, and my son is a particular sort of "yuck your yum" type moviegoer, who'll tear to pieces even stuff he likes. But the only discussion in the car afterwards is where we placed it among the top comic book movies ever made. Is it #1, 3, 6? Nobody thought it was lower than 6th all-time. The acting was top notch. Gal is not just another pretty face and Pine was fine, as well. The choreography of the action sequences is perhaps the best in any movie of recent memory. The cinematography and shot compositions gave me literal goosebumps, as i got one iconic moment after another. The story? Its an origin story, clearly told. My daughter gets easily confused by plots and she was like "i even understood everything!" I would have preferred the ending go in a slightly different direction, closer to the origin of comic book origin in terms of the paternal revelation, and i'm sure, were i of a mind to, i could go through a pick at threads in the plot to unwind the weave, but why on earth would i do that after such an intensely pleasurable experience? Its love story was touching, its humor was good enough to keep it from being too somber (unlike most DC movies), and its action was brilliantly executed. Please, sir, may i have some... more?
  7. She may be homely, but at least she's a nice Jewish girl.
  8. is it worth seeing?
  9. i ended up seeing this with Mrs. Sage, and it as i feared. An obvious, heavy-handed, "issue" movie biopic filled with cliches, stock characters and overall banality. Color-by-numbers version of "history". That being said, it has some good performances and i didn't hate it.
  10. Thoughts?
  11. i really wanted to see this movie, but after it got creamed by critics and viewers alike, i decided to wait for cable. I'm still waiting.
  12. i found it disappointing. I love STRANGER THAN FICTION and was looking forward to another Farrell drama but its really not that interesting.
  13. Edgy MD wrote: That's crazy. There's no rabbit. Hey, Universal, did you pay the rabbit? he's not in SAG.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: It might be a better fit if the scientist was the protagonist. yes, i agree. How about Harvey? According to both the play and the movie, the rabbit is real, so it doesn't count.
  15. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Also, THE TRUMAN SHOW. Also also, mildly-charming indie/Serious Will Ferrell vehicle STRANGER THAN FICTION. Definitely. I can't believe i missed those 2, since i really like them both. I didn't realize Forbidden Planet had a potentially fake reality. A monster projected unknowingly by the antagonist, sure, but not a whole universe. Well, i was on the border about this one. It's not a false reality, but the scientist's realization that the monster is actually HIM is this sort of twist. But i could be talked out of it.
  16. i liked it more than i thought i would. Well, "like" isn't quite right... "appreciate", perhaps.
  17. MFS62 wrote: Nice list. What was the fundamental reality in Invaders from Mars? I don't recall the plot. Later it was all a dream... or was it?
  18. no, i'm not talking about movies where the protagonist is just wrong about something, or surprised by something, but where s/he is unaware of something fundamental about themselves, like they are, in fact, insane or dead or fictional or dreaming or a figment of someone else's imagination. They're wrong about their own fundamental reality. Besides SHUTTER ISLAND, this includes such films as: CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI BLACK SWAN IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS JACOB'S LADDER ENEMY VIDEODROME VANILLA SKY REPULSION TOTAL RECALL MATRIX SIXTH SENSE BEAUTIFUL MIND FIGHT CLUB SECRET WINDOW SUCKER PUNCH WIZARD OF OZ DARK CITY INCEPTION MEMENTO LABRYNTH IDENTITY INVADERS FROM MARS 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T [crossout:2lk1dmwa]FORBIDDEN PLANET[/crossout:2lk1dmwa] MULHOLLAND DRIVE LIFE OF PI ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND THE OTHERS MR. ROBOT THE MACHINIST on edit: TRUMAN SHOW STRANGER THAN FICTION
  19. in the "deluded protagonist" sub-genre (like JACOB'S LADDER, OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, SIXTH SENSE, MEMENTO, BEAUTIFUL MIND, ENEMY, etc.), the plot's reliance on its twist ending makes it a one-trick pony. But its pretty well done, nonetheless.
  20. all i've ever played is the free Yahoo fantasy leagues, so i have no idea what i'm supposed to do. I've never actually participated in an auction-style draft. Do i pay actual money? how much? when? to whom? what are the rules of the draft and the league? When? Where? Who? How? and sometimes why?
  21. But i'm pretty sure that only one of those Newmans has a top 40 single. short people got no reason short people got no reason short people got no reason to live.....
  22. [u:3fhkrrd3]Nominated films / HSI,NGSI:[/u:3fhkrrd3] CAPTAIN FANTASTIC ELLE FENCES FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS HIDDEN FIGURES JACKIE LOVING MANCHESTER BY THE SEA SILENCE TONI ERDMANN 20TH CENTURY WOMEN
  23. Exactly. The movie floats like a dream.
  24. just a side "note": the songwriters are the young team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are musical theater writers currently represented on Broadway by their excellent DEAR EVAN HANSEN. They could win both Oscars and Tonys this year.
  25. Any way i can buy into the league this year?
