  3. Nunez is a top-of-the-order guy with pop and speed and can play adequately around the IF and OF. He's got some injury history, but nothing chronic. And he'll be cheaper than Walker or Kinsler.
  4. my affection for Lynch was always disproportionate to his ability and career production. I don't know why. Maybe because i respected him as a right-handed "crafty lefty" who got by on guile and guts, rather than stuff. He had no stuff. none. Yet, despite that, he had a major league career, and a pretty good year in 85. As much emphasis as scouts now place on velocity and "stuff" in the minors, often discounting actual production, i doubt he'd have made it passed A-ball these days.

  7. Kipnis is a guy who, when healthy, gives you at least 4 WAR per season. He's a 2-time all-star coming off a bad year. He'll be 31 at the start of next season, which is still a hitter's prime. And he'll be under contract for 2 more seasons, plus a team option for a 3rd, at relatively reasonable cost for a 4-WAR player. If we could get him for Gsellman and Guillorme, i would do that deal in an absolute heartbeat.

Why are they painted on a team's scoreboard or OF wall? Why are they so iconic, they can be used as the title of a movie? A player's number can become an iconic symbol of the game and take on mythic proportions. 42 anybody? anybody? Buehler?

  10. how do you present yourself to the public as having some expertise on the Mets (and if you're blogging about them, you're presenting yourself as an authority on them), and NOT know #36? Do they not know #41, too? #internetdeathofjournalism #opinionslikea_holes
  11. Callaway's staff will be: Gary DiSarcina - bench coach Dave Eiland - pitching coach Pat Roessler - hitting coach Glenn Sherlock - third base coach / catching instructor Ruben Amaro, Jr. - first base coach / outfield and base-running instructor Ricky Bones - bullpen coach Tom Slater - assistant hitting coach Any thoughts?
  12. he'll make the minimum but he can get a signing bonus from any team's international bonus pool allotment. That's where the teams can differentiate themselves in terms of compensation. The Yankmees can offer him $3.5M; the Mets $150k. So its not an even playing field in that regard.
  13. the money comes out of the team's Int'l signing pool money, and Mets have almost no more available. I read that the most they can offer is $150k. Other teams have millions available. so the point is moot.
  14. Jeter: Hey, do you guys want Dee Gordon? He can be had for the right offer. Alderson: I'm sorry. I stopped listening after Gordon. Jeter: He's still good! He can steal 50 bases, and he plays great defense! Alderson: What do you know about defense? BOC, dude. BOC.

Sabathia is going to sign with the Mets out os solidarity with Joe Girardi. He's going to sign with the Mets if they offer $100 more than another team. I meant the Sabathia thing more in the sense that he might not automatically go back to the Yankees by rote moreso than saying that he is specifically going to sign with the Mets out of spite, so I am putting him on my list for that reason. Aoki, Granderson, Austin Jackson, Daniel Nava, and Ben Revere are outfielders at some level, they can get one of them. I buried this idea in a longer post a few days ago, but at some point (and this point is now), they need to determine something with regard to Lagares because that $9 million guaranteed payday in 2019 is coming whether you like it or not. They have to see of he can play regularly for them or, alternatively, they need to create a trade market for him. Both of those require that he plays in 2018. So, say Harper and Metsblog are both right and the have about $40 million to spend. . . -$15 million for a closer -$12 million for a starting pitcher -$13 million to be split between an outfielder from the above list and a veteran backup infielder such as Reyes, Kendrick, or Yunel Escobar. You have improved the 2018 team and you are still set up for the 2019 Hot Stove where there is potential for bigger splashes. I disagree with just about everything you wrote. >"they need to determine something with regard to Lagares because that $9 million guaranteed payday in 2019 is coming whether you like it or not. They have to see of he can play regularly for them or, alternatively, they need to create a trade market for him." They've been giving Lagares every opportunity to show he's an everyday player, ever since signing him to that stupid deal, and all he's shown is that (a) he still can't hit righties, and ( he can't stay healthy. At best, Lagares has proven that he's a grossly overpaid platoon player and late-inning defensive replacement. There's nothing more to learn about him. It's not like he's some still-developing kid; he'll be 29 before next season starts. He is exactly what we've seen. And that's not a starting player in this era of run inflation. Everybody in a lineup now has to carry a bat; nobody can be carried solely for defense. >"-$15 million for a closer" spending big money for another closer is an inefficient allocation of resources. Bullpens are generally grown, not bought, and closers are notoriously inconsistent. I'd rather we spent half of this on a reliable set up guy, like Reed. > "-$12 million for a starting pitcher" I don't think we can get a solid SP for that, but maybe we can get a #5 guy. >$13 million to be split between an outfielder from the above list and a veteran backup infielder such as Reyes, Kendrick, or Yunel Escobar." Between Cabrera and Flores, we have quite enough backup infielders. What we don't have are starters. Assuming one of them starts at either 2b or 3b, we need a starter at the other position. And the notion that you can get one AND a starting caliber CF is questionable. I'm willing to live with a Lagares/Nimmo platoon for next year, but another OFer is necessary, and that doesn't include any of the awful players you listed. At the least, we're going to need 1 starter and 1 backup at the CF and 2b/3b positions and that's going to cost way more than $13m.
  18. according to any measure, Trammell and Simmons rank as HOFers at their respective positions. And Miller is way past due.
  19. MST3K doesn't just introduce bad movies and make jokes during commercial breaks. They sit down front and watch the movie WITH you and yell funny (and less funny) shit at the screen throughout. It's like watching a bad horror movie in Times Square in the 1970s. But without the pungent aroma of cannibis pervading the air... and the floors are less sticky (at least in my house).

Just as i did with Rey Ordonez. In a dead-ball era, you can carry a glove at an important defensive position, like Mark Belanger, because each run scored has a big impact on winning and losing. But now, in an era of run inflation, each run has less impact, so 1-run strategies are not helpful and big bats are necessary to keep up with the current style of play. And the need for a guy to run balls down in the alleys is also less important when the rate of balls in play going out of the park is increasing so much. Lagares is useful as a 4th OFer/defensive replacement/PHer against LHPs, but his bat is too big a drag on the lineup to play every day. He'll be paid like a starter next year, so he's a burden the Mets should get out from under, if at all possible (which i don't think it will be unless they eat some of his contract).
  22. Eduardo Perez said he was tipping his pitches.
  23. they're not moving either Cespedes or Conforto to 3b, injury or no, and neither should they. Enough with playing guys totally out of position. The focus should be on 1) a solid mid-rotation starter we can pencil in for 200 ip; 2) another closer to pair with familia; 3) solid bats at least at 2 of following 5 positions: 2b or 3b (with Cabrera at the other spot), Cf or Rf (with Conforto at the other spot) and C, with at least one of the bats being of the contact/ob%/ top-of-the-order variety.
  24. i'm not sure if this exercise is about naming the guys on those world series rosters (5 from each team) who played the best in that series (like Weis), or in that season (like deGrom), in their Met careers (Strawberry), or based on their entire careers (Staub). He's got guys from all of those categories, so its unclear to me what is trying to be accomplished. If i were just to pick the "5 best Mets" from the rosters of those WS teams (5 per team), my 25-man roster would be: C - Piazza (00) 1b - Hernandez (86) 2b - Alfonzo (00) SS - Harrelson (69) [Reyes not on a WS roster; Hojo = `86 team] 3b - Wright (15) Lf - Jones (69) Cf - Cespedes (15) [beltran not on a WS roster] RF - Strawberry (86) C2 - Carter (86) Of - Agee (69) Of - Granderson (15) [Dykstra, Wilson = `86] IF/of - Staub (73) UT - Garrett (73) [Hojo, Mitchell = `86] Sp - Seaver (69) Sp - Kooz* (73) Sp - Gooden (86) Sp - Leiter* (00) Sp - Matlack (73) [Darling, Fernandez, Ojeda = 86] Cl - McGraw* (73) Cl,Set - Benitez (00) Cl,Set - Orosco* (86) MI - Familia (15) [McDowell = `86] MI - Franco* (00) Sp/Rp - Ryan* (69) Sp/Rp - DeGrom or Syndegaard (15) [Darling, Fernandez, Ojeda = 86] The "5 per team" rule really screws the `86 team
  25. where can you find the WS rosters for each of those years? I can find the rosters for those seasons, but not specifically the WS rosters.
