  1. But that's what small market teams have to do... trade from strength to fix weaknesses. They can't afford to just go out and buy the parts they need.
  2. it looks to me that the payroll next year for the current 25-man roster will be about $110M, without bringing in any big-ticket players. If Fred spent around $140M this year, is he willing to pony up another $30m next year, in his new stadium? I would hope so.
  3. 2009 salaries: 1) Johan Santana - $20M 2) Carlos Beltran - $18.5M 3) Carlos Delgado - $12M - Billy Wagner - $10.5M (DL) 4) David Wright - $7.5M 5) Luis Castillo - $6M 6) Jose Reyes - $5.75M 7) Brian Schneider - $4.9M 8) Scott Schoeneweis - $3.6M 9) Ramon Castro - $2.5M 10) Endy Chavez - $2.05M 11) Mike Pelfrey ~$2M 12) F. Tatis - $1.7M 13) Marlon Anderson - $1.15M TOTAL = ~$98M Mets have the following players under their control for `09: 3-6 years of ML service (arb eligible): 14) Ryan Church (08=$2M) 15) Aaron Heilman (08=$1.2M) 16) Pedro Feliciano (08=$1.025M) 17) Duaner Sanchez (08=$0.85M) 1-3 years of ML service (NOT arb eligible): 18) Maine (08=$0.45M) - Burgos (08=$0.415M) - might be in jail next season 19) Stokes (08=$0.402M) 20) Pagan (08=$0.4015M) 21) Smith (08=$0.398M) 22) Vargas (08=$0.394M) 23) Murphy (08=min) 24) Niese (08=min) 25) A. Reyes (08=min) - likely to be in AAA, making room for a closer Declared FAs: O.Perez (08=$6.5m) Matt Wise (08=$1.2m) Damien Easley (08=$0.95m)
  4. Fred Zollo is producing a musical stage version of ONCE.
  5. okay, WHO IS THE THIRD AMIGO?
  6. soupcan wrote: I voted FOR Stripes, Road Warrior and Karate Kid. I'm basing my votes on which movie I liked more, whatever the reason. A perfectly reasonable approach, as always, Mr Can. and, as both your votes and mine indicate, sentiment in some contexts is less annoying than in others.
  7. but they don't pay them $6M/yr.
  8. well, at least you're consistent. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds - Ralph Waldo Emerson
  9. i'm not saying i wouldn't prefer Renteria. I'm just saying we've got money sunk in a middle infielder who has similar career stats (with a higher ob% and sb% making up for Renteria's 10hr power), and he may be a reserve this year, so what would we do with 2 of them? I'm all for moving/dumping castillo and signing renteria. I just don't think we can pursue him with the idea of actually starting Castillo at 2b for another season, or carrying both of them as reserves.
  10. Cantu has experience at 1b, and they have 3bman Dallas McPherson, who hit 42hrs in AAA last season, waiting for a shot. It seems the obvious move. I'm sure they'll also give Gaby Sanchez a long look in the Spring, but he's 24 and ha never played above AA (other than a late season cup of coffee with the Marlins last year), so they may want to have him start the year at AAA and see what happens.
  11. yeah, except his age & career numbers are relatively similar to a guy we're already overpaying for that role... Mr. Castillo.
  12. Are those that are damning ET for its sentimentality the same folks that voted for ARTHUR over ROAD WARRIOR, and are currently voting for KARATE KID over PEE WEE? just wondering.
  13. and this man shapes young minds at my alma mater... This is why i don't give them any money.
  14. but, but... We're not talking sentiment, we're talking sentiment plus karate. for a superior "sentiment + karate" combo, I recommend DRAGON:THE BRUCE LEE STORY. But PEE WEE has no corollary... unless you consider the movie that Ionesco may have written and Bunuel may have directed, if they had decided to collaborate on a remake of THE BICYCLE THIEF.
  15. for more on BLADE RUNNER, see the 70s SF thread: http://cranepoolforum.qwknetllc.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8860
  16. i love the first TERMINATOR. I even like the sequels (both of them!), and i'm enjoying the Fox series THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. But, as far as I'm concerned, BLADE RUNNER may be the single best movie made in the last 30 years. see the BLADE RUNNER thread, for my thoughts on that topic: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=7590 I'm sorry this matchup had to occur so early in the tournament, but we've got to retire the skin job or we're all little people.
  17. I cannot understand those that decry the sentimentality of ET, and then turn around and vote for KARATE KID over the surreal delight of PEE WEE. And don't give me any "but, but" excuses, cuz everybody i know has a big "but".
  18. i have no idea why THREE AMIGOS is in this competition. While i'm not a big "naked gun" fan, this is no contest. i liked the POLICE FILES tv series better, because this type of comedy works better for me in small doses.
  19. STRIPES is an ocasionally funny service comedy, up until they decide to raid Chekoslavakia, at which point the stupidity overwhelms the comedy. E.T. is a global touchstone. Emotionally manipulative, yes, but so are most successful works. i vote for sentiment over stupidity, and superb craft over sporadic competence.
  20. ah, yes, the GSS. I was banned there... a distinction i wear with honor. I don't even remember why. I think i tried to incite an insurrection against their overbearing administrators.
  21. COMING TO AMERICA is a big, flat, stupid, lame turkey. BOD is a small, quirky, still-funny Cusack coming-of-age pic. no contest.
  22. I love magical realism, and FOD captures the spirit of the book beautifully. I can't watch that movie without breaking down. WITNESS is a beautifully wrought cop drama, with Kelly McGillis' ample bosom on display. A toughie, but i went with FOD.
  23. This should be an absolute blowout, but, apparently, it isn't.
  24. i've always liked HEAVEN HELP US but its no GHOSTBUSTERS.

]But it really is a logical stretch to link Robinson's legacy an adversarial relationship to the Mets no, it's not. Robinson was a Brooklyn Dodger, and became emblematic of that franchise. That franchise ran out on the borough of Brooklyn to make more money out west. My parents never forgave them. Many in my old neighborhood curse the Dodgers to this very day. And a statue to their icon in the Mets lobby is an affront to the very real pain people like my parents went through. Its not that they blame Jackie, or don't honor his memory and his accomplishments, both on and off the field. But they'd just as soon not have their noses rubbed in one of the most painful memories of their baseball lives every time they walk into their own ballpark. Why is that so hard to understand?
