  1. Here's the problem - we all know that the process for selecting the All-Star teams, Gold Gloves, and Silver Sluggers is rife with inherent flaws and lacking in transparency, and that voting for MVPs and Cy Youngs failed to account for a variety of then-discounted or uninvented statistics in those years and wildly overweighted wins and winning percentage. So why should we put so much stock in honors that are conferred by secret ballot, ballot-stuffing, or general ignorance rather than what someone actually accomplished on the field?

Otherwise known as "everyone else in sports journalism this side of Chass." Strikeouts, shutouts, complete games, longevity and durability? Who are the dorks that value these things and why are we letting them ruin baseball? What exactly am I supposed to value again? WINZZZ! WINNERZZZ MAKE WINZZZ! And, apparently, we're supposed to value All-Star teams and Cy Young votes, despite the fact that neither are actually earned by any physical motion on a baseball diamond.
  3. AP: SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon is the main suspect in a fatal shooting New Year's Eve in the Dominican Republic, police said Sunday. The pitcher is suspected of killing 25-year-old Michel Castillo Almonte and wounding his 17-year-old brother during a celebration in the northeast coastal town of Luperon, police said in a statement. No motive was disclosed. Simon is from the Dominican Republic, and police said he fled after the violence. Felipe Alou Jr., a Dominican representative for the Orioles, said he spoke with Simon on Saturday and the player said he was in the area when the violence occurred but insisted he was not involved in the shootings.

  7. I forget, where does one go for that breakdown of already-published Hall ballots?

  14. Yeah, I'm not super-worried about offense at second when it's pretty much a committee job at this point. I'm more concerned about defense.
  15. Is Lutz's head really that weird-looking or is that just some kind of bad stretch-job?
  16. Phil Humber DFA'd by the Royals. You've gotta give Minaya credit - he kept the right pitcher.

I think he asks the right questions, it just appears that he doesn't have the sources or access to the answers that some of his competitors do. He's been here long enough though that you'd think he'd have that access now, I wonder if his fellow beat writers have let him in to that circle at all. Perhaps his year away covering the Phillies created some kind of undue animosity towards him? Or maybe people really don't like his attire?
  18. Perhaps nobody takes him seriously... I wonder why that could be? Hmmmm...
  19. Do it. You've gotta hold talking heads accountable.
