  1. Well, if we're talking about she's cuter than he is........
  2. What about "Lazy Mary"?
  3. Well, that's one way. And I'll take it. And bedtime for Bonzo.
  4. Castillo keeps it alive.
  5. A home run would have been better, pitch being in his wheelhouse and all.
  6. I knew he could do it.
  7. Does Delgado inspire confidence in this situation?
  8. Well, I guess that's true in a sense. I'd hate to see Delgado behind the plate.
  9. Who are they? First cheap hit off Figgy.
  10. I meant Hartung became the poster boy for bonus babies who flopped (one of his nicknames was "Floppy").
  11. Dick Wakefield, for the younger set, was one of the original crop of late 40s-early 50s "bonus babies," at a time when Organized Baseball, to discourage the practice of throwing huge $5000 bonuses at young players, instituted a rule which stipulated that when a Major league team signed a player to a contract in excess of $4,000, the Major League team was required to keep that player on the 40-man roster for two full-seasons. The most famous of these was Clint Hartung of the New York Giants, signed as both a pitching and hitting sensation, proving to be neither. Wakefield was another, and he had a few decent seasons with the Tigers, but never justified the thousands that were thrown at him (of course WWII had something to do with that).
  12. I'm with DDD -- this isn't really a Met number, it's a baseball tribute number. Maybe noted as a footnote.
  13. Figueroa! Butch Stover! Casanova!

    42

Yeah, the 42 thing is a gimmick, and you could maybe make a better gimmick. But as Keith pointed out, 10 years ago many baseball players, including African-American players, barely knew who Jackie Robinson was. Now he's remembered again by ballplayers, because of these gimmicks.
  15. I looked up Dave Orr. His last season was his best -- playing for Monte Ward's Players' League team, he was hitting .371 with 124 RBIs when he suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed.
  16. Does this pass the seat-of-the-pants test? Do we really believe this represents the greatest hitters of all time? 1. Babe Ruth+* 1.1638 L 2. Ted Williams+* 1.1155 L 3. Lou Gehrig+* 1.0798 L 4. 17. Wouldn't it be great to go back to the old days when they never used corporate names, but instead called the ballparks things like Wrigley Field and Busch Stadium?
  18. Or they'll boo at even more inappropriate places than they do now.
  19. Pelfrey 4 Wright 4 Reyes 2
  20. Official, no. But if Barry Lyons, say, were to come to town and open "Barry's" on his own, I'd give it a shot. At least until "Gary's" opened down the block.
  21. Hillary or Elliot Spitzer?
  22. Sort of surprised Carter so low on the list.
  23. Who are the two cowboys?
