  1. I don't suppose either Seo or Trachs could do the Smotlz/Righetti thang.
  2. How many shutouts will Seo have to throw in order to win a spot in the rotation?
  3. It's not totally out of the question that racism was involved. Men from a different generation were running the Mets back then. But Chilcott was considered a blue-chip prospect.Scouting is an inexact science. Look at Mike Piazza's draft status.
  4. Yes, Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini.
  5. They've had Diaz, Valent and Daubach up at various times.
  6. It wasn't that bad. It really was fun rooting for the Mets in those days. But my recollection of the Houston team's name is a little different...and perhaps wrong. I remember it that they started out as the Colts, meaning the gun, but after discovering that too many people thought they meant the little horse, the then changed it to Colt .45s.
  7. Beltran scores on the double steal!
  8. Cameron, Mike 6Floyd, Cliff 9Glavine, Tom 7Looper, Braden 7Matsui, Kaz 4Mientkiewicz, Doug 5Milledge, Lastings 9Piazza, Mike 3Seo, Jae Wong 1Trachsel, Steve 8
  9. The Mariners have a pitcher named j. j. Putz, and the Rangers an outfielder named Kevin Mench, and at least once this season, Putz has pitched to Mench.
  10. I went to college (honest) with a guy named Dick Hertz.
  11. Good job, Farmer Ted.
  12. My favorite was former Ranger star Carol Vadnais, whose wife's name was Reymonde.
  13. Do you figure an intangible quality of Metliness here? McReynolds never struck me as particularly Metly.
  14. They knew it was Cleon because they found shoe polish on the girl's ass.

    10K out and 10K back?
  16. Last night's matchup of Victor Zambrano (Mets) and Carlos Zambrano (Cubs) was the seventh time in Mets history that pitchers with the same last names started against each other:Date Mets pitcher Opp. pitcher Result7/7/62 Al Jackson Larry Jackson Mets 5, Cardinals 45/30/63Al Jackson Larry Jackson Cubs 12, Mets 07/7/65 Al Jackson Larry Jackson Cubs 8, Mets 36/30/75George Stone Steve Stone Mets 5, Cubs 19/11/91Tony Castillo Frank Castillo Mets 4, Cubs 15/11/99Bobby J. 17. Minky to DL? So the News says.
  18. Wonder if this says anything about Bunning as a senator.
  19. Cleon gets my vote.
  20. Marty Noble: Who is the best left fielder in the Mets' history? -- Ben T., Conshohocken, Pa.How do you judge that? Bernard Gilkey's 1996 season, when he drove in a club-record 117 runs, is the best single season by a Mets left fielder and as good a season as any Met -- other than Hernandez, Darryl Strawberry, Piazza, Howard Johnson, Gary Carter, Rusty Staub and Robin Ventura -- has had.But Gilkey never came close to duplicating it. Cleon Jones was an integral component in the Mets' World Series championship in 1969 and their pennant in 1973. But his best season didn't come close to Gilkey's.Have a question about the Mets?Marty NobleE-mail your query to MLB.com Mets beat writer Marty Noble for possible inclusion in a future mailbag column. Letters may be edited for brevity, length and/or content.First Name, Last Initial: Hometown:Email Address:Question:Dave Kingman didn't play enough left field -- he played first base and right field, as well, in his two tours with the Mets. So he doesn't qualify.George Foster never did for the Mets what he had done for the Reds, any more than Vince Coleman's impact with the Mets even approached what Coleman had done with the Cardinals. And left field was not a one-man position for the Mets teams that prospered in 1998-2000, with Rickey Henderson and Benny Agbayani manning the position.Floyd is in the midst of a special season, it's similar to Gilkey's '96. And Steve Henderson was a solid but unspectacular player for the Mets from 1977-1981.My vote goes to Kevin McReynolds, the left fielder from 1987 through 1991. He was the best defensive outfielder in club history until Mike Cameron. And he was a productive hitter. I voted for him as the National League MVP in 1990.
  21. smg5 - good show.
  22. Trip West
  23. Another nice pick by Anderson for our number one, and an efficient K by Heillman for the second.
