Is this sarcasm to any end? I don't think that was an unreasonable inquiry.

Did come across this from Mets Memories on the UMDB, 2012: "] In retrospect a horrible, franchise-wrecking error of colossal proportions. I don't remember any outcry at the time. There were those who compared getting McReynolds to the Yankees getting Roger Maris in 1959. Who were these folks?

That's mostly fair. I was referring to the secretly recorded conversation between John and Paul, in which John, after having a more productive conversation at George's house, brings George's terms to Paul, but is more interested in trying to get across how George is feeling. It isn't particularly clear from the outside, but because these guys seem to mostly understand each other's ambiguous language, Paul seems to get it. The four-songs-per-album thing, with two more for Ringo, would have been great, but it would have had to have been a soft rule, rather than a hard one, or else inspired initiatives like the Abbey Road medley would have been undercut by the focus on equity. But the trust wasn't there.

Eli was always versatile, but he had a bat that justified itself best at catcher. By the time he reached the Mets, had been through cancer surgery and had had his thyroid removed. He couldn't take the day-to-day grind of catching any more, so he went from a catcher who could also bounce around as needed to a guy who bounced around as needed who could also catch. There's a special place in the afterlife for guys who can serve as a backup catcher and utility guy on the same roster.

I generally don't go for editorial headlines, but a lot of work went into LET'S FINALLY GET MAD.

It's like the reporter whose first question to the World Series MVP is "Are you gonna repeat?!" the first question after a number retirement is "Who's gonna have their number retired next?!" Bleh.

The Mets didn't cut Ray Knight. He was a free agent, and they offered him more money and years than any other team did, despite the fact that they had multiple attractive (better, to my mind) options at third.

Oh, I hear ya. We're talking about the herpes thing, right?

Anybody remember a "Letters from Columbus" feature in The Village Voice in 1993? A staffer had fallen in love with the out-of-nowhere story of Stanky in 1992, and when The Yanks instead went with Pat Kelly at second and Spike Owen at short the next season, they piled on the insult by farming Stankiewicz out, so this writer (Allen Barra?) took it upon himself to imagine an exiled and lonely Stanky corresponding with his former teammates as if it were a voice from fallen into another dimension, as if to be farmed out by George Steinbrenner was to be cast out of all time and space.

Mixing a shampoo metaphor with a toity metaphor? To headline a story where nothing has actually happened? Why did you even get up that morning, New York Post back page editor?

Andy Stankiewicz stops presses!

https://twitter.com/byronkerr/status/1480621651045801984 You had a chance for a "Memories of Elian Soto" thread all teed up for you there.

Giants deny Mets request to talk to pitching coach Andrew Baily about becoming Mets benchie. Andy Stankiewicz, currently the Grand Canyon University head coach, has declined the Mets inquiries for the same position. I'm feeling kinda John Russell-y.

Every time I think I have useful memory to add to the record, G-Fafif out-details me by a laughable amount. I tip my baggy hat.

I'm of the mind that fWAR doesn't accurately represent closers, but it sure creates an interesting alternate history.

On a Turn Back d'Clock day in the late nineties, the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays took the field as The Tampa Tarpons in a game against The Mets.

Well, that's what makes the name unfortunate — the team has long endured such derision well before gaining a female manager. We might want to avoid that appellation.

As the assignment of bench coach is seemingly holding up the announcement of the Mets staff, recent news reports have the Padres denying the organization the request to talk with advance scout/development coach Ryan Flaherty. Jeff Pickler, who holds the title of "game planning and outfield coach" with the Reds, has removed himself from consideration as well. In the "big splash" department, buzz is being picked up regarding Bobby Valentine returning to the organization as a special assistant. That's not a uniform job, certainly, but if the vaccuum persists at Showalter's right side, speculation will start to seep in. Also, the Yankees have just hired affiliated baseball's first female manager, Rachel Balkovec to command the Class A Tampa Tarpons.

A crushing loss for CRUSHING.

Still only two new faces, though a couple of guys are seeing their first team assignments. Chris Jacobs' is an interesting new assignment. The long-time minor league outfielder has been designated a "development coach," as if they aren't all on the development squad. It'll be curious to see how his role develops. Young addition Bryce Wheary was a former college player who impressed more with his commitment to conditioning than with his hitting and pitching, so he joined the organization last year, though too late to get into the media guide. His twitter feed features which management and leadership books he's plowing through. Among guys that haven't been assigned, but haven't been let go as far as we can tell, are Tanner Miracle, the wonderfully named performance coach from the 2021 Syracuse squad, and Carter Capps, the Complex League pitching coach who was also a coordinator. Other longtime pitching coaches we're not seeing are Jonathan Hurst and Royce Ringalingaling.

Terrific stuff.

Ellis' issues finding his stroke again were no doubt real and injury-related. Nonetheless, he's making multiple arguments at once about the hand he was dealt. Phun Phact: In an otherwise perfectly cromulent season as a 1982 Met, he somehow walked only five times in 350 trips to the plate, or once ever 70 appearances. His isolated OBP was .006.

Nick Canepa belongs in the first-person pronoun Hall of Fame. His use of "I, me, my, and mine" per sentence is nothing short of prodigious. I'm not sure I get the "Vatican archives" analogy. When he speaks of getting "into" the Vatican archives, is he speaking of writers and artisans whose original or reproduced works are stored there or is he speaking of researchers permitted to visit the archives? Or his he just a Dan Brown fan and wanted to work that in there somehow?

Yesterday, the Mets announced the 2022 managers for their four full-season leagues, and shortly after, Binghamton tweeted their full staff. Then, while MRC staff rushed to assemble and report that information yesterday evening, Brooklyn went live with their staff as well. Wouldn't you know it? As we were diligently prepping that info for release, the Syracuse and St. Lucie staffs dropped also. That information will follow later today. He had been the favorite internal candidate to take over for Brian Schneider as major league field coordinator, but now that he's been otherwise assigned, that role will likely fall somebody else in the next 48 hours. Luis Rivera returns to Brooklyn where he was a New York-Penn League All-Star infielder back in 2009. Most notable in these new staves is how among two full new staffs and two other newly announced managerial hiring, only one new face appears, in the person of Brooklyn pitching coach A.J. Sager, who had been with the Tigers organization for 20 years. New Brooklyn performance Drew Skroki gets an awfully plum first assignment, having served as an intern in 2021, before joining the salaried staff in November. He's an interesting young man in that he comes from the profession out of college baseball, having pitched for Penn State–Berks County for three seasons, before realizing that he trained for pitching better than he pitched. Maybe Ben Grimm knows him. St. Lucie and Syracuse staffs coming later today.

Hey, he got my vote. And I'm OK with puns. It's poorly executed, phonics-ignorant puns that eat me up. "RED, WHITE & BOOM"? Get out of here.
