  1. Viola 1990 had the last 20-win season for the team until R.A. Dickey.
  2. Willets Point wrote: Syndergaard lost the duel of ex-Met pitchers to Michael Wacha last night. Got some cheesy intel but it's my fault for where I went looking. You're back in touch with HVAC Guy?!
  3. Good one. Orange groves.
  4. Willets Point wrote: When thinking of MLB cities with a surf culture I still would go with San Diego rather than the one that is distant from the coast at the edge of a desert. That's the problem, though, right? Culturally, Anaheim doesn't really resonate much. It's most famous building is a fake castle. It's cultural institutions are borrowed and faux. It was founded by German immigrants who wanted to get into the wine game and didn't know what to do and got wiped out by a grape blight. It's the childhood home (though not the birthplace) of Jackie and Mack Robinson, but was also a huge upwardly mobile Klan stronghold. Even to the extent that Anaheim=Disney, it's not really the provocative, woke Disney that MAGA resents, but the awkward (and worse) white-hegemony Disney that MAGA misses. So, with the options of culture being theme parks and convention centers, it isn't too suprising that they'd borrow from a more resonant neighbor.
  5. France and Italy too. 6. The thin-then-thick solid racing stripes are a theme from mid-century style common to surfboards, leisure wear, cars and such — particularly popular in culture emanating from Southern California. 7. It's silly, but I kind of hope the Angels get this monkey off their back before we face them.
  8. I think a big part of both the balk rule and infield fly rule stem from a general distaste with deception. Deception is all over baseball, and most sports, but it tends to be at a private, nuanced level among the players. The sort of deception that leaves a guy pantsed in front of the audience was perhaps seen as more distasteful.
  9. Sleep well, youse. I will file this one in the books for all. http://prodimage.images-bn.com/pimages/9781602396791_p0_v3_s1200x630.jpg>
  10. Bob Melvin can call Dave Roberts if he wants to confirm it, but the Padres are now eligible to insert a position player on the mound.
  11. [bIGPURPLE]¡¡ESCOCYCLE!![/bIGPURPLE]
  12. Replay center has to look up San Diego ground rules.
  13. And instead, a three-run homer by Luke Voit brings the Pads back in the game, but there's a delay over the ruling.
  14. You sleepers just missed some hot Escoboom! action.
  15. Hot damn, Craig Stammen is still in the league and pitching for San Diego. Is Ray King the next guy out of that pen?
  16. It's not as much of a departure from the standard kit as the others have been. Not saying that's a bad thing.
  17. Keith making a Grapes of Wrath joke was pretty funny. But generally this broadcast is a reminder that Gary/Keith is the weakest of the potential 3 SNY combos. Yeah, that "stroke out" business was awkward, but not as awkward as Keith twice openly struggling to identify the gender of the ball person.
  18. Interestingly, dealing with Jeff's ass came up during http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30964&p=83444#p83459Buck's introductory press conference.
  19. I disagree with Keith and Gary — a guy bunting for a hit with advancing himself as the residual effect deserves credit for the sacrifice bunt. It's good baseball!
  20. Cookie looking to tie for the league lead in wins in this game. Pitcher wins, of course, are deceptive, but he's already canceled his 2021 debts and more.
  21. Gary mentions varsity athletes from Santa Clara, and I wonder if they know Jess and Jules from Bend It Like Beckham.
  22. Well, the mission statement of this thread has been fulfilled.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: Alfaro is one fast catcher. Scores from second for the first Padrun, but getting Profar was a worthy consolation prize for the Mets. Faster than literally everyone on the Mets right now. Going by feet/second in 2022, and taking "right now" quite literally literally, https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/sprint_speed?min_season=2022&max_season=2022&position=&team=NYM&min=10you're quite right. 1) Jankowski: 28.9 Alfaro: 28.7 2) Nimmo: 28.6 3) Marte: 28.4 4) Lindor: 27.6 5) Escobar: 27.5 6) Canha: 27.3 7) Davis, J.D: 26.7 8) McNeil: 26.6 9) Smith: 26.4 10) Guillorme: 26.1 11) McCann: 25.8 12) Nido: 25.3 13) Alonso: 25.2 14) Mazeika: 23.8 I guess, in theory, Nick Plummer can keep up with him, as we don't have sufficient data on Nick, but that's damned impressive.
  24. Ha-Seong Kim is no Khalil Greene. Possibly not even an Everth Cabrera.
