    Nimmo just overslid second but grabbed onto it as he flew by and anchored his body in place. It was on a double. Had he been coming from first, though, he'd've had his kitchen accessories on and slid right over.

    I'm not comfortable seeing the Marlins in a uniform I don't hate. Also, nice pick by Lindor, but his lack of urgency almost let Berti beat that out.

    He probably just means swapped into the rotation. Depending on potential upcoming deals, Williams is likely to remain in the bullpen if and when he's no longer starting. If the Mets can actually field a deGrom-Scherzer-[CROSSOUT]Williams[/CROSSOUT]Walker-Carrasco-Peterson rotation, even for a few weeks, it'll be hard to acquire a pitcher good enough to break that up. A veteran with a CV, even if he's now merely on a par with Peterson, would still have the juice to bump him to the bullpen, though. And then we'd have Rockin' Doc's second lefty. Peterson's next start is going to be important to the rest of his season.

    Apart from different teams' Old Timer's Day game in their stadia, there was for a time the nationally oriented Cracker Jack Old Timer's Classic (as seen above). I think it was played in Buffalo, but maybe other cities too — usually non-MLB parks that resonated with old-timey glory. I think you're right that it was scheduled around the All-Star Game. They also tried to differentiate it by making it at least a little bit more competitive than the team-based games. Older dudes appeared, but recently retired Johnny Bench-types tended to dominate the action. I don't remember how much they shortened the fences — presumably they did to some degree — but I also remember in what I think was the very first of these games, a rather old (75-ish?) Luke Applinng led off with a homer, and he didn't hit a whole lot of those in his actual career. I'm guessing that, even though it wasn't that big a national event, team's assumed that it kind of made their own OTD games seem redundant, because the local affairs started disappearing around the same time.

    Fun fact: Paul Clemons was given the home plate assignment only after a late scratch moved Angel Hernandez from behind the dish to second base.

    It took me a while to realize I was looking at the strikezone from umpie's point of view. I like that they try to glean their best interpretation of the umpire's zone.

    I'm not sure that's exactly fairness, strictly speaking (two wrongs and all), but in fairness, yeah, "ball 2" prol'ly was a "strike."

    Syracuse takes the top half of a doubleheader tonight, 9-4, on the strength of homers by Blankehorn, Katoh, Marrero, Jankowski, Vientos, Blankenhorn (again), and Lee. That's seven homeruns in a seven-inning game.
