Stupid New Rules for 2023 (the Rob Manfred Hates Baseball Thread)
Edgy MD replied to Fman99's topic in New York Mets Talk
There's nothing sacred about 15" bags, but there is something sacred (if only kinda) about 90' basepaths. The issue with the shift is that they aren't addressing the real problem, and asking what has happened to the game that it hasn't evolved to counteract the shift. Why do they have to reverse engineer the game to prevent teams from deploying a defective strategy. If a football team's defense stacked the line play after play and left only one defender in the backfield, the other team would quickly respond and toss quick passes over the line, until the first team realize they've been outmaneuvered and spread their defense neutrally for most plays. If the defense played everybody in the backfield on every play, the offense would run off tackle in response. If they played everybody on the offense's left side, the offense would call a quick audible and run a play to the right. Even if you're not playing to your strengths, if they're giving you free yardage, you've got to take it until everybody gets honest. Why is it somehow unsporting for a baseball team to adapt in the same manner? -
That's certainly workable. And to me, meaningful. My general disagreement with teams retiring numbers, and now leagues retiring numbers isn't to dis' these legacies. It's just clear that the potential numbers available (at least as currently practiced) is finite, and the number of players available to have a number (at least in theory) is infinite, or at least ever expanding. It's clearly an unsustainable practice. And yet, each number retired actually makes further retired numbers increasingly more likely. I feel like retiring Jackie Robinson's number hasn't really made his legacy shine, so much as made a golden calf out of the two digits — almost literally, in that we have a statue of his number, the meaning and substance embedded in which is underwhelming (to my thinking anyhow).

A few notes for our off-day standings update: More isn't always better when it comes to information, especially when that information isn't accurate, but I've added more information, including an Elimination Number column and one-week deltas in addition to one-day deltas to show the change in post-season odds. It gives a better look at the trend line, and as expected, the Mets' odds have improved slightly from yesterday, but declined precipitously from a week ago. The elimination number for the Wild Card race is one off of how the MLB site has it. I know how do calculate elimination numbers and the ones in the division race are matching up with MLB.com's figures, so I have to look at that. I'm guessing that they aren't linked to the same of the three leaders that the CPF figures are, or perhaps something is kerfuddled by Philadelphia being ahead of San Diego but with fewer wins. I suspect the seven-day deltas have some inaccuracies in there too, because the pluses and minuses should mostly add up to zero, but they aren't, but until I clarify that, I'm leaving them in, because the important one-week delta is the Mets' number and that looks right. The Mets had a chance to eliminate both the Nats and Bucs, but kinda gakked both time. It was a rough outing from a Pirate fan perspective. If Oneil Cruz had been lifted after failing to run out his grounder, it might have been half worth it, but Pirates manager Derek Shelton seemed to be phoning it in as much as anybody. -
Megill's first rehab appearance with Syracuse featured only one strikeout. He still got the side in order, on 10 pitches worth of efficiency, but this time he made his defense stay awake.
