Kind of a stinky run that I hope isn't the difference.

Gary Sanchez is the only Brewer in the lineup today who has ever received a Metly paycheck but Trevor Megill comes with Metly DNA. Rick Sweet is managing the AAA Nashville Sounds.

Going overseas in World War II with the name Seymour Wiener, and living until 2024 to tell about it, makes a man a triple-hero.

Go, Kassie Harrelson, go!

Terrific at-bat leading to that homer too. I tell them two things every offseason: Don't confuse Ken McKenzie and Bob Ojeda; Push the railing back on the M&M deck, so there isn't confusion on whether a ball clear clears the fence, and is an opportunity for outfielders to reach over the fence and pull the ball back.

I like how, with first and third and one out, The Brewers played like they had their backs to the wall, and the Mets were aggressive.

Rough deal, Bobby. Keith honoring the occasion buttoning himself into a splashy gold suit. https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2024/03/screen-shot-2024-03-29-at-1.37.39-pm.png>

Yes, I know. I'm just thought it valuable to collate information together into one big, blue ... thing.

A former Yankee Opening Day starter trying to refind his mojo as a Mets mid-rotation cog. Fun Fact, this has almost never been tried before. Bartolo Colón never took the hill for the Yankees on Opening Day. Mike Torrez never did. The closest thing to a precedent I can come up with is David Cone 2.0, and ... that's not a very healthy precendent. So I'm unprecedented. I'm Unprecedented Fucking Luis Severino, and that means you're going to have a time coming up with a prior Met to reference in predicting my 2024. Jeff D'Amico? Pete Smith? Orlando Hernandez? Good luck. Just get your guesses in by tomorrow, because guess who is starting Game Two? Well, we had the right Mets lineup, and had all the right nine guys in (mostly) all the right positions for the Brews. Just had a few guys out of order in the back end. CAN MLB.COM SAY THE SAME?!?! I guess that kind of implies that Harrison Bader is going to be an Opening Day scratch in center.

Nats and Marlins go down to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, respectively, leaving the National League East winless on Day One.

They STOLE it from us!" when a Mets prospect signs with the Yankees, but Ryley Gilliam has been running a rough road since 2019. He had a really nice, strong finish for the Mets with a sub-1.00 ERA in The Arizona Fall League, but then the plug got pulled on the 2020 season, he returned in 2021 but was never really right, piling up an ERA over 9.00 in 27 innings, and he has been on the Injured List with one malady or another ever since. So if he can find new life in the Yankee system, more power to him. And as of this afternoon, the Yankees have placed Ryley on the 60-Day Injured List. He ratiates a sense of comfort in his own skin. That said, he was always the most questionable signing of this offseason, with a really unimpressive track record for a guy who has reached the bigs. But you've got to sign guys in case the guys you want to perform get hurt, and you've got to sign guys in case those guys get hurt too. After a relatively healthy spring for the Mets, there was no room for Chad in Flushing, Syracuse, or Binghamton, and that's a good outcome. Godspeed to him in his next endeavor. Surprised but kinda delighted Baltimore went ahead with the game.

I think lazy references of prior dudes is the way to go. It keeps the events within the walls of Club Realism.

If DJ Stewart is the reserve outfielder who hits, I'm the reserve outfielder who catches stuff. But I also hit pretty impressively for most of the spring before tailing off at the end. I guess it's that all-round goodness that has my reserve outfielder ass coming up in this exercise before Starling Marte's starting ass. Listen, if baseball is a fight, you don't want to bet against somebody named "Tyrone." Guys named Tyrone always get up off the mat. Always. But what happens when I get back on my feet is still an open question. That's why I'm asking you to close it by telling me FACTS about how my 2024 is going to play out. I imagine the main outcome of the Eppler case will be less folks won't abuse the Injured List anymore and more folks will be more careful about dotting their i's and crossing their t's, and will keep everything close to the vest, when abusing the Injured List.

Edgy MD wrote: How the hell could I have been the best show in town in 2023, and the disaster that cut the legs out from under 2024 Pssst This is a bad showing.

Sports is theater with an unwritten script. What makes it better than other dramatic endeavors — you don't know how it's going to turn out — also makes it worse. Because you don't know how it's going to turn out, you can't guarantee anything. And if people see a dud, they may not want to come back. So organizations try to find a way to wrest control of the drama through production. Baseball tends to be way behind the other major sports in this regard, but an increasing way they've done that is through choreographed closer entrances. And now the Mets have wedged themselves into a big chunk of the marketplace on choreographed closer entrances. But reality can't be denied. Smoke and lights and music can frame the drama but they can't control it. And so, yeah, the more we commit to that sideshow, the more we are inviting it to humiliatingly blow up in our faces, as we cling to our stupid foam trumpets. It also affects a team's strategic deployment. When the fanfare entrance is part of the product, they won't allow an official save situation pass without calling on the guy, whether it's the wise move or not. And anything less than 50 saves is somehow a failure. Oh, yeah. He goes 4-4, 44 saves, 2.44 ERA, leads the team in strikeouts somehow. Ignites a brouhaha when exception is taken following an inside pitch to Kyle Schwarber. Or Brandon Marsh. It's unclear.

How the hell could I have been the best show in town in [CROSSOUT]2023[/CROSSOUT] 2022, and the disaster that cut the legs out from under [CROSSOUT]2024[/CROSSOUT] 2023, but all this ZiPS is predicting for me is 1.4 fWAR, same as backup catcher Omar Narváez? I don't know ... well actually I do. fWAR undervalues situational performers, and rates a shutout ninth with a one-run lead the same way it rates some Shlobotnik throwing a mopup inning in a blowout when everybody just wants to get home. So, you know, don't listen to fWAR. And don't listen to ZiPS. Listen to your HEART! Listen to your heart, when he's calling for you. Listen to your heart — there's nothing else you can do. And when your heart has spoken, and your ears have heard the trumpets, please, write down what you see. For me. In 2024. That shared-patch thingie rings a bell, but I can't quite summon the memory. I think John Milner died that offseason also, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't him.

Yeah, there's some bits of housekeeping to take care of from this week. When MLB personnel was thin at the start of the offseason, he was projected as a member of the Mets rotation. That was simply by virtue of having a far more prolific minor league record than any of the alternatives, however, and was only particuarly meaningful in an alternative-universe scenario where the Mets were never going to sign anybody else. That he would endure the groin kick of not getting invited to camp despite that minor league record was unanticipated. He did throw two shutout innings in a single spring MLB appearance in which he was floated over, but that's cold comfort. He had been grabbed off waivers from Cleveland at the start of September, but despite being on the MLB roster, the only real interest the Mets seemed to have was in him being a warm body in a period in which options were thin following their late-summer selloff. Bryce Montes de Oca continues to have trouble returning to and staying on the field since his September 2022 debut, but Dylan Ross, who has yet to even appear as a pro since his July 2022 drafting, would likely love to trade places. The Bickford and Voit situations are well documented, but it bears repeating that Luke Voit is a homerun champ twice signed by the Mets and twice released without once getting into a big-league game. Forget launch angle, kids. Be selective and make good contact.

I was the starting catcher, and the bridge to Francisco Álvarez. But I got hurt, and the bridge had to be crossed sooner than expected. There we are on the other side of the bridge. But I'm still here. We've crossed the bridge, but we still have a bridge. I AM the bridge. What does that mean? I don't know what it means, but it's probably a good thing. There are going to be other rivers to cross — many of them, according to Jimmy Cliff. Despite my now-backup status, ZiPS (who? I dunno) is predicting a robust 1.4 WAR from me in 2024. Combine that with the 2.6 WAR they expect from Álvarez his-own-self and that's 4 big fWAR from the catcher position. That's winning stuff, right? I mean some marginal amount of that will be earned by us at other positions, but some marginal amount will also be added by the Nidos, Austin Allens, Hayden Sengers, and/or Kevin Paradas. If you get four wins from each of the eight positions, tack that on to the 40-win baseline, and you're looking at 72 wins before you even add in contributions from pitchers and DHs. If we can pull that off, we're going to be alright, right? But CAN I pull that off? CAN I do my share? I'm lefty hitter in a walk year, allegedly good enough for the first string but no longer with the burden of proving it, so sure, why not? But what I think matters not. What I do — and what you think about what I will do — is what we seek here. What will I do?
