1. It's probably a good thing that the Pirates got a hit here in the third. It would have been a mess if the Mets got a no-hitter after Joe wiped Reynolds first-inning hit off the board.
2. Much better series if your name is Harrison Bader.
3. Tough series if your name is Connor Joe.
4. A swing-and-miss pitcher, and a catcher who has demonstrated a capacity to sleep on the job. Bunt a little. Steal a little. Make a little contact. Make a little havoc. Win a little game. Give me your heart and I'll love you till Tuesday.
5. Met legends Whitey Herzog, Roger Craig, Juan Berenguer, Vince Coleman, and Joel Youngblood . Some hot, steaming side dishes of Ray Burris, Norm Sherry and Clint Hurdle are also on the menu. Despite the low-res video, players are quickly and easily identified by the lovely font size on their name plates. Not to make too much out of punch-ups, especially with the "best fans in baseball" tossing **** at the Giants, but Whitey Herzog was consistently one of the best shows in the game in the 1980s.
6. I celebrated Carl Erskine as alive at 97 just yesterday in the IGT. I hope this one isn't on me.
7. It may seem like just yestermonth, but I debuted for the Mets back on June 23, 2018. I was mopping up the ninth inning of an 8-3 loss to the Dodgers. Devin Mesoraco was my catcher. I walked two but I got through the inning unscathed. I'm not saying there's a correlation, but the next day, Saudi Arabia let women drive for the first time. Flash ahead to six years later, and I'm the longest serving member of the Mets pitching staff. The Dean, if you will. That doesn't mean I necessarily have earned a clearly defined role in the interim, but on the days when the Mets are resting all their higher-end relievers, I'm usually the best of what's left. King of the Dipshits, as Farmer Ted might say. But I say I'm more. Fangraphs' stupid system projected me for a measly 0.1 WAR, and now they're saying I've already got that, while baseball-reference says I've pocketed 0.3. I'm rocking a 1.23 ERA through my first 7 1/3 innings, and I'm kind of moving up in the world. I've passed Michael Tonkin and Yohan Ramírez, that's for sure. But we all know that what has happened to date can only say so much about what is yet to transpire. Who says the rest? Well, you can, if you have the courage. Watch me closely while you do it. I've beaten predictions before. 8. Well, if he's being quite honest, the West Coast doesn't have the best hitter-friendly parks for him.
9. The previously un-named Pirate stater will be young righthander Jared Jones, a second-round pick from 2020 who has struck out 25 and walked only two thus far in his 18-inning rookie campaign.
10. Three is My Coward.
11. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Freaks me out he's a righty. It'd be even weirder if he was a Democrat. Al was perhaps the most open advocate for pimping out uniforms in advertising, and now he gets the pride of watching his son take the mound for his first time as a Major Leaguer on behalf of ... Energy Transfer, your go-to outlet for pipeline transportation, storage, and terminaling for natural gas, crude oil, NGLs, refined products and liquid natural gas.
12. Number 4 is Damion Easley on a tee.
13. Number 4 is another guy who could be a couple of guys, but it seems to point most directly at Jeff D'Amico.
14. Johnny kicked my ass as I overslept.
15. It was amazing how much of an embodiment he was of the emperor's-new-clothes-iness of the Yankees brand. When parts of the Yankee brand aren't really getting it done — and this is especially true of elements of the brand that came into being during George Steinbrenner's long sunset — everybody just had to pretend were terrific. The end of Jeter's career, Jeter's actual public character, the façade of YSIII, Robert Merrill, Ronan Tynan singing "God Bless America" while goons force you to remain standing at your seats, John Sterling, Suzyn Waldman, Clemens, A-Rod, ... Steinbrenner himself ... everybody just forced to grin through it and pretend that everything is peachy and worthy of celebration. The cognitive dissonance must be awful. And yeah, the fact that he was just an old guy with diminished faculties, out of touch with his audience, but doing his best in an unwinnable situation, just gave me a soft spot for the guy.

17. Five is Miguel Cairo.
18. Four and five feel like they can represent more than one guy, but I'll go with Don Aase for #4.
19. The Pirates return for more abuse before screaming and unbridled fanaticism of the denizens of the Tuesday Night Mets Club. Lefty José Quintana goes for the Mets against an as-yet-unnamed starter for the Pirates.
20. He indeed might have slid early, but he got it done. Diaz really seems to be still searching for his better stuff, but he got it done and he got it done.
21. Then there's the Bud Harrelson memorial patch, which is crammed in with the skyline logo patch so that the two patches are practically touching each other, they're so close to each other, because the best sleeve real estate is now reserved for .... wait for it ... Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. If the memorial patch is supposed to be a successor to memorial black armbands — and I think it's pretty clear that it is — those have been traditionally worn on the left sleeve, so yeah, it's extra crass to have the memorial patch displaced by the sponsor patch. 23. Mets should honor a retired number or retire a new one every damn night!
24. Man, did Ottavino make McCutcheon look bad.
