  1. No, I think that possibility has been implied here, although not necessarily endorsed.
  2. Valadius wrote: I'm sorry, it sounds way too much like something someone calling Francesa would cook up in their head. Cuban would never, ever be a minority partner in anything. And he would never get in bed with the Dolans. I call bullshit. Well, get in line. On the other hand, like Marshall Crenshaw said, something's gonna happen.
  3. Interesting descrepancy between how he was used by Oberkfell and how he was used by Jerry last year. In Buffalo, he pitched 1.72 innings per appearance. In Flushing, it was 0.85.
  4. Robert Allen Parnell (Hey! He's an R.A. also!) Pos: rp; BR-TR. Born: September 8, 1984 in Salisbury, NC. (He'll be 26 in 2011.) The Mets, hanging on in their first pennant race in forever, and coming off a 10-0 drubbing of the Cubs, get shut the fuck down by Rick Sutcliffe, pitching the best baseball of his life. Thanks for nothing, Ray Knight. Acquired: Drafted by the Mets in the 9th round of the 2005 amateur draft and signed June 11, 2005. It was as deft a move as one could hope for, considering Bobby went 3-5 with an 8.86 ERA at Charleston Southern that year. No woman could handle him. Random Nickname: Um, "Bobby Tres Nueve." Namesakes: Goodness, me... Best Day in 2010: Spending the first half of the season back on the farm, Parnell emerged in the second half seemingly more physically and emotionally mature. At least one of those traits was on display on August 18, as a thundastruck Bobby made nobody long for the injured and suspended and shamed K-Rod, pitching two perfect win-or-go-home innings, striking out three, and hitting 102.5 on the gun, the fastest pitch recorded in the season by anybody to that juncture. Good scoutin', Omar. Last Word: Bobby enters the season as the team's consensus number two reliever, and sentimental favorite for number one in some quarters, at least until he starts letting those speed gun readings go to his head. What do you expect of Bobby Parnell in 2011?
  5. So, I take it that none of the major media outlets have followed up on this scoop? Somebody needs to turn in his blogger's license.
  6. Still, to play with it for a bit, who would you frame as senior partner in that gambit? Unless a ton of parties are lining up to lend MLK III money, it has to be Cuban over Dolan, right?
  7. metirish wrote: Eh is such a put down too, being doing that a lot lately Edgy. Sorry. It's not really meant as such, and to the degree that it is dismissive, it's toward the Cohen Brothers, and not you. I'm sure each film adapted more than once from the same source material would have the later creators go back to the original source. But they also have to acknowledge that frequently the success of the prior adaptation(s) is what gave their film viabliity and bow to that at some turns. The makers of The Addams Family bent over backwards to declare that their film was based on an original interpretation of Charles Addams cartoons, but of course it was informed by the TV series as well.
  8. Eh, they all say that.
  9. You're not even trying.
  10. In general, the more managers display the courage to push players as far right along the defensive spectrum as they can, the better. Replacing a fielder with a hitter can be so valuable.
  11. Angel Anthony Pagan Figueroa Pos: cf, rf, lf; BS-TR. Born: July 2, 1981 in Rio Piedras, P.R., a hotbead of baseball birthing. It was a sweltering summer with no baseball for me, and I had a family of less-than-perfectly-welcome British cousins staying with me, making it four of us in the attic bedroom with no air conditioner. Angel will be 29 in 2011. Acquired: Traded by the Cubs to the Mets on January 5, 2008 for Corey Coles and Ryan Meyers, neither of whom yet knows what big-league coffee tastes like. I never heard that one either, but there it was at bb-ref.com. I associate that nickname with Tim Foli. Namesakes: On the right: Best Day in 2010: He did everything except win. Last Word: He's set as the number two batter, but his defensive position (right? center?) is still up in the air. What do you expect of Angel Pagan in 2011?
  12. I've been wretchedly sick this weekend, and my typing reflects that. To be honest, my typing has been terrible for several weeks now, and I'm starting to worry --- frequently going back to re-read my posts and finding prominent typos, missiing words, or entire missing phrases. (Notice also how I write about the Wilpons being "in the scam," rather than "in on the scam.")
  13. So then, the best witnesses that could testify that the Wilpons were in on the scheme would be those few above them in the pyramid. Madoff's so far posturing to go down claiming that he alone was responsilbe for the fraud. But the Feds have lined up many more targets of presuction, any of whom could possibly geta plea bargain for testifying against the Wilpons. But if the Wilpons themselves aren't (yet) targets of prosecution, it looks going to be hard to establish in a civil suit that they were in the scam.
  14. Hey, whoah, those are lessons from subsequent Die Hard movies. (Also, they're too close to true for comfort.)
  15. Ike Hampton, straight into Compton.
  16. Germans are clinically cool, fashionably dressed, murderous bastards. Long-haired men, too. Corrupt to the soul. Biggest threat to civilization? Scumbags. Cops could carry handguns on planes back in 1988. Didn't know that. The media are spineless parasites. All of them. Society would be safe if they just let good cops do their jobs and fuck peple up. They know who the scumbags are. Cops, man --- the good ones are kept down by the asshole brass who supervise them. The Japs can build a big financial giant. But they're not ready to find out how things really go down in the U.S. of A. The sixties of Mad Men had nothing on the eighties. You want to have sex or do some blow during an office party? Just go eight feet down the hall and do it in a vice president's office. She won't mind. Neither will the president and founder when they catch you in the act. If you call the police and report the headquarters of a multinational corporation is under attack, they won't take you seriously and will tell you to hang up. Better to blow out the first three floors of the building with a few bricks fo C-4. That'll show those impotent assholes sitting on their ass while good people are dying. 1988 was a funnier year than I appreciated.
  17. If he needs help, Pedro Beato can warm up in the pen.
  18. Jonathon Joseph Niese Pos: sp; BL-TL. Born: October 27, 1986 in Lima, Ohio. (He'll be a scant 24 in 2011.) Acquired: Drafted by the Mets in the 7th round of the 2005 amateur draft and signed July 1. Random Nickname: "Hawkman," man. Namesakes: None I can find. Best Day in 2010: On June 10, Hawk threw a one-hit shutout of the San Diego Padres. It was only the second time in team history that a pitcher had thrown a complete game while pitching to as few as 28 batters (one above the minimum). It was the second game of a double-header, and really crucial for momentum purposes. The Mets had won four in a row at home before losing the first game of the doubleheader behind Johan Santana. That could have been a morale drain but Niese's shutout closed out the homestand perfectly, and the team went on the road and won the next seven. Niese also walked twice and scored in that game. Last Word: He started 2010 as the number five starter. He starts 2011 as number three. He's got more than a shadow of a hope to be number one by this time next year. What do you expect of Jon Niese in 2011?
  19. I'm investing my money with Duan's friend. I suspect the 'Pons, guilty or not, can get plenty far arguing that, if the SEC and other regulators, missed Madoff's act, the "knew or should have known" argument is hard to sustain. But again, I can't see all the angles.
  20. In hindsight, sure. "My money was in the hands of a lifelong friend and associate, and he told me the funds were diversified enough to withstand volatile markets. I trusted him." You may not buy that, but it seems defensible.
  21. This exercise appears to have grown tiresome for you.
  22. I'm not doing well in betting, but I'm pretty reasonably confident that the team will outdraw the 1978 Mets.
  23. To heck with the court of public opinion. Steinbrenner was an out-of-control autocrat who treated the rules and the law as an inconvenience and he has virgins dancing on his grave. Let's stick to the court of business law.
  24. Be fair, they're crackerjack baseball men also.
