  1. In searching for common surnames, we are failing to stray far beyond the anglophonic world. Vargas is a welcome exception, and in honor of the name, I will offer the character of Jason Vargas
  2. [FIMG=500]https://www.billboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/steve-miller-1972-billboard-1548-1620311676.jpg[/FIMG]
  3. Well, fortunately the wild pitch is part of Helsley's toolkit.
  4. Is stealin' still part of Marte's toolkit?
  5. And it is a one-run, un-conceded game! Not that Maton is getting it done, but going to the lefty to face Soto and Alonso is a tough call for Ollie Marmalade to be making.
  6. Bases bloated here in the eighth. McNeil not taking any chances on the bases, passing on two opportunities to go for the extra base.
  7. The Cards have induced three DP opportunities this inning and gotten two outs out of them.
  8. Any word on what hap'd to Winker?
  9. Mork & Mindy-era journeyman utility reliever Dyar Miller.
  10. Of course, they haven't conceded anything — except maybe that Victor Scott is really fast.
  11. Blade is an amped-up dude.
  12. I approve of this film. I am surprising myself by going over 3 1/2 for a film of this genre, but it gets four bass drums from me. Every time it zigged along in a pleasing-enough-but-predictable pattern, it zagged off at the right time into some new territory. I like that they were able to reference Black Sabbath without playing "Paranoid" or "Iron Man," but instead played the hell out of "War Pigs" — not the obvious pick of the klassick rawk programmers but definitely the one that gets real metal heads going. They played it so much that it was hard to tell where "War Pigs" ended and their killer original "Machinery of Torment" began.
  13. I think the Jays would be, like, his eighth team. Has a great future in Immaculate Grid. Got tossed once (as a Marlin, or maybe as a Cub) after hitting Ronald Acuña (Jr.) in the elbow with the first pitch of the game, after Acu Acu had homered in five straight games. He got an impressive six-game suspension after that, which I don't think was even cut in half on appeal or anything. One of those alternately crafty/erratic José Lima types who may pitch 20 years, who seems as capable of winning 20 games as he is of losing 20, or throwing a shutout and giving up six runs in the first inning in the very next start. I get the idea that he would never take PEDs because there are so many subtler and more creative ways to cheat. Drugs are just lazy. He once touched 99, and while that is certainly in the past, I bet he'll still be out there grinding when he's topping out at 90.
  14. Álvy suddenly hitting .269.
  15. These Cardinals jerseys fail on (at least) three levels: "The Lou" looks silly. The red-on-red cardinals make the birds on the bat invisible from more than 40 feet away. They still have the tiny font for the names on back.
  16. The early defensive substitution of Taylor for McNeil makes sense at most levels, but it also cost the team their last infielder with four innings (at the time) to play.
  17. Best booth in baseball also missed a pinch-hitter announcement. Off night, fellas.
  18. That Taylor-for-McNeil defensive sub paid off nicely.
  19. Everybody gets a hit this inning. Between Gary talking over Gelbs and sleeping through the run-scoring E3, along with Keith sneaking out of the booth to hang with Ken Reitz, baseball's best booth is suddenly feeling like watching the Rizzuto-era Yankees.
  20. How did Gary blow that call?!
  21. That breaking ball ain't working so well for you this inning, Sonny.
  22. But Sherlock seems to be finding himself.
  23. Sorefoot Holmes isn't the best version of Holmes.
  24. Generally speaking, Cardinal unis and imagery are among my non- Mets favorites, but these 'The Lou' jerseys tonight are kinda dumb. Indeed. Besides, it should be "Le Lou."
