Are we talking worst as far as ability, or worst as far as performance? Because if it's the latter, I'm a big Jay Bell fan. Huge. Guillermo Mota too, for that matter, if we're looking at total volume of negativity introduced.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves.... I don't dispute that the organization had come to a reckoning, or that they have a good clue what lies ahead. (Who knows? But they probably have a better notion than than Minaya's team did seven years ago when they signed him. I hope so.) My main problem is that, in the end, he was essentially traded for Ronny Cede�o. And I don't care that he didn't work out. A $1.4 million bonus (in 2005 dollars) to a hot Dominican teenager that you believe in is still a better bet than a 2012 $1.2 million (plus incentives) deal for Ronny C. to be your backup shortstop.

I'm curious where the Giants are in this. They have some diynamite pitching, back-of-the pack offense, Aubrey Huff coming off a stinky year, and they still finished in second place despite scoring fewer than they gave up. They didn't really get in on the Reyes chase, but I don't hear their names bandied about when it comes to Prince Fielder.

That month was also famous for marking the defection of Bret Sabermetric from the Mets to the Sox, the DFA-ing of John Franco, and the fallout form Kenny Rogers assaulting a cameraman. Ends his Met career by inspiring a crackpot column at Yahoo.

Did his throwing deteriorate in the bigs. I don't recall. I thought he noodle-batted his way back to the minors and there his throwing fell apart. Performing respectably in the Australian Baseball League, he got signed away by the Indianfolk today. After he got sent down last year, he supposedly got all screwed up and caught a case of the Knoblauchs. Took some time off to get his head on straight. Finished the year trying to put his mechanics back together all the way down with the now-extinct Gulf Coast Mets. Inspirer of opening-day doggerel. Wore 25, which could only bring up memories of Kaz Matsui to see it on an undersized Asian infielder again.

I guess the market has ebbed for closers if the Mets can get Frank Francisco at two years, $12 million. It was a flooded marketplace and some shy buyers. I guess in such an environment, the likes of Boras says, "Get a good one-year deal with a team that you can pile up some stats with, and re-enter next year."

I'd say it's probable. How educated that hope is and how much stock Sanderson is placing in it are further matters, but there have been whispers for several months that the Mets were looking to move on from the Martinez adventure.
