Hope for something vaguely realistic, and you won't be so disappointed that you end up, say, wanting to throw out $5 million dollar assets for having a bad Spring Training, or shitting on a knuckleballer/bearded good/decent guy just because. I'm more or less cool with the notion that it might not play out to 97 wins. Baseball wins are a zero-sum game. All the kids can't be above average. One man's glory is another's disappointment. Cultural advancement, though, that can happen anywhere and any time. So, strive to win, yeah, but don't be a douchebag under any circumstances.
  2. When I'm typing quickly, I oft embarrassingly find later that I've mistyped a homonym in place of the word I meant to put there, but I really like the more nuanced meaning that comes out with Ceetar's feel/fail booboo above.
  3. Well said, and the Wolfcastle line is one I was really grasping at, but in fairness, the article had Bay as the best leftfielder in beesball, according to that metric.
  4. Yeah, the old "medium negates the message" issue is always there with me. The review in the Daily News was very good: five stars. Ever since the News gave a top rating to the film adaptation of Annie!, I've tended to suspect anything that got top ratings from them was something they had a stake in somehow.
  5. Yeah, all that. Too costly if he was a just-for-the-time-being solution. Funny to solve that by getting a guy who's five years older but professionally younger.
  6. Old people steal freedom from lithe, creative, beautiful and spirited youth. They'll build a whole society around it, given half a chance, because they're bitter, jealous, murderous fucks. Vampires, really. Yeah, I don't know either.
  7. I got the idea that the trade was mostly about getting past Pagan, who they had started to get a foul taste from.
  8. The Mets seem confident that he'll provide more reliable defense than Pagan. The offense is anybody's guess. I get the feeling we'll someday learn where it all went wrong with Pagan. I guess there was an injury or something, but you won't often see a guy fall from the top of his field defensively to the bottom like that. Particularly in center, where a defender is more in control of his game than practically anywhere. .258 / .329 / .398 // .727 Eight homers, 47 RBI.
  9. The babysitter has her way with me four or five more times that summer, and into the fall, and each time feels more wicked than the time before. Every time that I know I'm going back over there, the sweat starts to come back. I sit in the front seat of the car, next to my mother, anxiety surging. I never tell her why I am so afraid. I never tell anyone until I am 31 years old.
  10. Rangers 2001. I imagine the clubhouse was littered with 'em.

  12. Why would you depend on the same doctor for a conclusive and final opinion regarding an outfielder's back injury, a starting pitcher's elbow ligament, and a pitching prospect's kinesthetic outlook? That guy goes 0-3, and I question the manager who sent him to the plate each time.
  13. With him coming over in a challenge trade, an outright flop could reflect really poorly on the Alderson regime.
  14. I don't know quite what the scenario is that'll unfold. There are 1,000 ways it could play itself out. Scenarios involving Havens discovering health. Duda becoming an indefensible maniac. Pelfrey finding his out pitch. Parnell becoming deadly. Maybe the guy who really exploits the shorter fences is an unanticipated dude like Murphy. A mid-season trade for some goofball sidearmer that is suddenly un-httable. It happens all the time. Looked at more closely, there are 10,000 scenarios. Infinite ways, really. I just think there are more positive scenarios out there than people are willing to acknowledge. Understandably so, but I think the dice can and perhaps should land on one of them. So a guy puts a gun to my head, asks for a number, and I say 97. I dunno.
  15. I thought it conservative.
  16. Maybe the Mets did such good work scouting his defense that they didn't put enough thought into the long-term viability of his bat. I just sometimes wonder if concussions just take the fire out of your punch.
  17. 97-65.
  18. I don't like to get into specifics. It'll be a positive, positive year. Many steps forward. Many enemies vanquished.
  19. I don't believe it's that easy for a minute. Come on, you can't possibly either.

  21. I kind of see this --- wishfully probably, at least in part --- as the way Hudgens' hitters roll out their game, though. First they get the eye down. They're hitting .210, but with plenty of walks. Then they's hits start dropping in when their patience is rewarded with good looks at balls sweeping across the outside of the plate, turning into drives the other way. Then the real payoff comes when a pitcher isn't fooling them at all, and starts getting set up for inside pitches that they turn on for power. Duda in 2011 was sort of that in a microcosm. Punchless, but with a good eye, then the batting average started coming up in June and July, and then by August and September, the kaboomage. Patience, he teaches to the paduans. And so we might have patience as well.
  22. Game, set, and match, New York. No errors, people. NO ERRORS!
  23. Biggest game of the year and Acosta on for the save.
  24. Awesome team. Awesome.
