Oh, and by the way, if you just bought a piece of the Mets two weeks ago, congratulations. -

This will be the third franchise Stan Kasten has owned a chunk of. He could be like the new Veeck. -
He's leading off in today's game.

Yeah man, anti-virals have been what we've all waited for and haven't really been celebrated enough for the triumph they are, because they're an effective therapy and not a cure. But we're saving millions with them. People are living for decades after their diagnoses rather than year or two they were getting back in 1983. And (PSA coming) thanks to our PEPFAR programs, these drugs are available to the poorest of the poor. When the budget-cutters come around in Congress, demand that your Congressmembers keep PEPFAR alive. It's accountable, it's cost-efficient, and the value-added is immeasurable. -
Guys I/we hadn't realized were still jobless for 2012

Yeah, I get what it could have meant to young Billy. But it seemed to be designed to deliver more weight to the heartbroken older men the film was seemingly aimed at. If I'm 18, I'm like, whatever, dude. Oscar-candidate? Yeah, maybe. If they hold a special category for date movies for forty-somethings. -

I was going to link to that today. It's a lovely open metaphor. A lot of folks can take different things from it. Hopefully not only self-affirming things, but yeah. I was also going to kick this one out today: "Dick Tidrow." OE: Holy crap, a response from his legendary brother.

Things switching around for the opening day outlook. Yeah, I'm at the point where I'm slotting in whoever has a better afternoon today, and none of them are in the lineup except Johnson at C.
-
I hear you, but, I'm laying off guys who aren't on the roster or in camp. What I'm really trying to prick my ears for is any reason I should continue to include Loewen and Rottino over Baxter, May, Johnson, or even Valdespin. Four spots --- two in the pen, two in the outfield --- looking pretty wide open.

Top Ten Hitmakers in Mets History Ed Kranepool: 1418 Jos Reyes: 1300 David Wright: 1248 Cleon Jones: 1188 Edgardo Alfonzo: 1136 Mookie Wilson: 1112 Bud Harrelson: 1029 Mike Piazza: 1028 Darryl Strawberry: 1025 Howard Johnson: 997 Pretty dramatic, right? But oh, the drama is thicker than it would seem at first blush. If Wright gets into games at his career rate, he should appear in 149 regular-season contests this season. Assuming that, if he collects his hits at his career rate, he should move past Jos Reyes into sole possession of second place on the all-time hit list for the Mets. Assuming Reyes hasn't returned to the Mets and continued to add to his hit total, this occurrence should take place in game 51. This should take place on June 1 (weather permitting) , a Friday night and the first of a four-game weekend set against the Cards. Buy tickets now to the whole weekend and you're giving yourself a decent chance to catch some history. But, assuming he continues, getting into games and getting his hits at his career rate, that could be the last hit milestone he gets to, at least this season. For he would finish the season with 168 hits --- getting him to a career total of 1,416, leaving him two hits short of Kranepool. TWO!

I didn't get that. I mean, it added a touch of drama and gravity to the story, but as something a scout would say to a top prospect he's trying to sign, it didn't make a lot of sense. That wasn't from the book, was it? -

Farmer Ted wrote: It might be the finest piece of nonfiction baseball writing since Ball Four. Perhaps above all, it's a classic epic quest, a flawed hero's unlikely odyssey to the major leagues and to discovering the mystical pitch that helped him get there. "You know what it is to me?" asks Dickey. "A vision I saw to fulfillment." You're a fast reader.

Contemplated suicide as recently as 2006.

Hey, start your own thread, Mr. I-Can-Read-a-Calendar. Anyhow, Mets go down 7-5, rallying in the ninth, but only plating one run and leaving the bases loaded as Thole goes down looking and Dudie flies to left. I have a feeling slow-starting is part of Thole's MO. And he could find himself getting some boo baths some time this spring.

Ramon Ramirez coughing a run up. Strange how we focus on the back end and the front end has all had lousy springtimes.

Throwing scoreless innings today: Parnell (again), Edgin, Ramirez. Touched for a single run were Rauchy. and Olson.

Looks like we've sat this one out. Mets trail 6-4 in the seventh, with most of the damage coming against Chris Schwinden, likely in his last hurrah. Duda has gone deep. Met homers this spring: Duda: 4 Cedeno: 1 Davis: 1 Johnson: 1 Loewen: 1 Tejada: 1 Turner: 1 Valdespin: 1 Or: Everybody but Duda: 7 Duda: 4

Sounds like we're both right. Anytuck, I do it all the time too.
