  2. Oh, and police (but not Eddie Cornejo at this time) are searching for what appears to be a 5'7" Hispanic Met-loving groper. [youtube:2hmdn85j]Gc_7hjyZQ1s[/youtube:2hmdn85j]

  4. Yabbut... Jack Howell? Clean-up? Look at Martinez winding up to get sweet handful kerrywoodass. He always seemed kind of like man-boy Ricky Schroeder to me --- his tough guy beards always looking like peach-fuzz sprouting from childish cheeks. Never really seemed to grow up.
  5. Youse guyz want me to be fired, don't you?
  6. And the next day their arms fell off.
  7. Not if we have anything to say about it... and we do! It's only a matter of time before the idea of theme-clothing road trips (a) becomes tiresomely universal, and/or ( explodes into a horrible PR nightmare, but those jerseys are a fun way to fly, and one more thing to hoepfully raffle off for charity.
  8. Polie Officer Eduardo Cornejo, arriving home after his arrest at NotShea Stadium for the badge-tarnishing sin of helping himself to a seat upgrade. "He was in a section he wasn't supposed to be," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the New York Daily News. "They asked him to leave. He wouldn't. (A) supervisor asked him to leave. He wouldn't. The uniformed police sergeant asked him to leave. He wouldn't, and he was arrested as a result." I don't know what's stranger, that the case was important enough to get a statement from Commissioner Kelly or that he stayed true to the orange blue with his cap even after they had him locked him up and possibly ended his career.
  9. John Franco is the guy everybody seems to hate because every seems to like or something.
  10. Well, many of the logos you reference are more insignia type logos --- the ones used on hats as opposed to the ones that appear on sleeves or shirt fronts or on-deck circles. (Though the elements overlap with many teams.) I have to say that, as far as hat insigniae go, this one always drove me bonkers, because the F and the fish have different geometric centers, so the hat never seemed to be on straight.
  11. Probably wasn't the greatest pitching performance ever, but it was up there. Harvey Haddix certainly has a claim on that title as well. I'd say the greatest was a tie between Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger.
  12. I'm OK with the White Sox logo. It doesn't say much, but it has dignity. The other three, respectively, say to me: "This team features the illegitimate children of Ben Franklin!" "A mysterious and nefarious multi-national corporation has taken over the US Government!" "This team sucks so much, they make savages pause and laugh hysterically in the middle of their bloody raids!"
  13. Kerry Wood retiring after today's game.
  14. I've got an urge to rent me a little VHS action:
  15. I got my 5.43 vote for him in, so...
  16. The News is wrong. I wouldn't handicap it that way at all. I'd have it like Valdespin 60% Davis 25% Nieuwenhuis 8% Baxter 5% Turner 2%
  17. Know what would really make sense? Taking advantage of other managers' rigid devotion to pitch counts, while escaping the mental trap yourself.
  18. So how about this guy? The SandyMets, bit mostly in the ass by Willie Harris, opt this year against pursuing the alleged value of a veteran lefty pinch hitter on the bench, choose the Queens boy, which peals chimes of PR-over-baseball thinking, and he's... performing. Outperforming, in fact, many or most of the Rick Ankiel-set higher-ticket vets that the Mets passed over in favor of finding a useful dude on the AAAA carousel. Did you think we'd be here after his first at-bat of the year, striking out in a scoreless tie with two on, two out, looking at three consecutive pitches? Here's to the guy, and here's to his cousins Chris Jones, Matt Franco, and Eric Valent --- the few fellow bench players in Mets history who arrived and performed despite not having much to show on their big league rsums.

  20. I'm in favor of letting the pitcher bat on Earth, and using the DH in Hell. Barring that, I'd suggest sending down an extra reliever or a versatile bench player like Valdespin, and calling up a potential masher like Lutz or Pascucci.
  21. Ralph's been saying it for 40 years. You get the same pitch 3-1 as you get 3-0. I'm sure that's not 100% true, but close enough to 100% for Kiner. The implication: you might as well force the pitcher with his back to the wall to throw it twice, and you might as well get two good looks at it.
  22. Ceetar wrote: On the other hand, not staggering it creates more makeup opportunities. I could even create interesting ones. Imagine the Mets and Reds rained out in April, but he Reds are playing the Yankees in June. Maybe in June the Mets play the Reds in the afternoon, and then the Reds bus over to Yankee Stadium while the Mets host whoever was the regular team for that homestand. freaky. I imagine that scenario can play out pretty much as easily by the Reds returning later in the week while they remain in town to play the Yankees.
  23. It just gets sillier and sillier down there in Florida as the Mets sweep Bradenton while Blake Forsythe drives in all six runs for the team.
