  1. I'm coming around to the (absolutely stupid) notion that no-hitters will be like opening day wins for us --- a thing that we go from being associated with only in terms of failure to being associated with in earnest. Like we'll be reading "Yet Another No-Hitter for the Mets!" How's that for crazy giddy stupid? Anyhow, we're out of the cellar, and it's nice. 3. That's awesome. No-Hitters by Mets 1) Johan Santana: 1 2) 930 tied with 0 Johan is on a pace to finish the season with 3.12. Let's celebrate the no-hitter by bombing Wright with a contract offer.
  4. Met Hunter wrote: I love seeing a true warrior like Johan fight back from the abyss and put away a number one ranked offense. I think this is going to rise to the top of the conversation over the next few days. These aren't the crippled Padres. This is a really good hitting team. metirish wrote: No offense to scrub pitchers but I would not have liked to have seen a Batista throw the Mets first no-hitter, better that it was Santana. Yeah, but there are scrubs and there are scrubs. I'd love for it to have been an otherwise marginal homegrown guy like Heilman or Pacella or Anthony Young or somebody.
  5. Thoughts that hit me overnight and stuck with me as, for the first time, I woke up with a no hitter beside me: Was that Jim Duquette in the radio booth with Howie? I don't quite know the timbre of his voice yet. I thought Duke was going under the knife, but it sure didn't sound like Lewin or Ed Coleman or Jiggs McDonald or Juan Berroa or anybody. I think we need to stay with Jim until he falters, just like we're staying with the gwreck on the IGTs. How about Terry resisting the temptation to put Hairston in right (where, to be fair, he made some sucky plays last year) or Valdespin at second? You'd figure that in both cases you'd get more hit-preventing range, if not error-preventing sureness of hands. Is being a defensive replacement in no-hit bid just too much of a shit-your-pants situation that a manager shouldn't ask it of somebody unless he's got Ozzie Smith or Keith Hernandez or somebody on his bench? If there's a no-hitter going on, and the game isn't sold out, can you just pull up and buy a ticket in the seventh inning? Is this the day Josh Thole became a man? Sucks to be one of the guys who got sent down this week. Double sucks to be Jose Reyes. Tough Titties. You have a hundred million consolation prizes. Three soft liners/flares in the last innings really seemed to be knucklers --- the one Nieuie, the one to Torres, and the one to Murphy/Quintanilla. But that may have been my heart knuckling. The outfielders also seemed to playing shallow the last two innings. I don't know if that was a function of the batters or maybe they had an understanding that if Santana was going to get beat, he wasn't going to get beat on something soft. Contrast Baxter's catch with Pedro Martinez's no-hit bid in (I think) Los Angeles when Gerald Williams failed to make a catch because he folded before hitting the wall. BOOOOOOOO, Gerald! The tiniest part of my mind worries about a letdown start in the twilight game tonight by Dickey. Fuck that part of my mind. If Wright is coming out of his slump and Duda is smoking hot... if we have talented reinforcements coming into the pen... if we have no less than four impressive pitching prospects banging at the door of the big leagues... can anything stop this team? No, nothing can. Don't tell me otherwise. Can't believe Ben Grimm cried. Beautiful.

  7. "WAY TO JO"? Seriously, New York Post, you better have something better for me by tomorrow.
  8. Paul Hoover, Kit Pellow, Cole Hamels, Ernie Banks, Wade Boggs, Keith Moreland, Chris Burkethe whole miserable club. Who are these guys and what is their significance? Just a buncha stooges who didn't play for the Mets, I think.

  10. I didn't there. A quirk in my formula gives too much credit for late-inning tack-on runs. It's not really been an issue, considering the way the team has played this year, but I kinda screwed him out of a few points his last time out. This time, I just went in committed to giving him a sexy six. After punching my numbers in, Baxter came up with a zero. I got all arbitrary and bumped that up to 0.5. I'm not made of stone.
  11. Terry, asked if he had ever seen anything like this, recalled what I think he said was his first year of managing (for Vero Beach, I guess). "I had Sid Fernandez and he pitched two no-hitters. The second one, the GM had him on a pitch limit of 130. Going into the ninth, he had 18 strikeouts. He was up to 119 pitches. And I said 'That's it --- 130 pitches and I'm taking you out.' He goes out and strikes out the side on 10 pitches. Finishes with 21 strikeouts." How the hell did we ever get that guy? Tore through the minor leagues like the love child of Doc Gooden and Fernando Valenzuela, and we get him for Bob Bailor and Carlos Diaz? Really? Could Ronny Cedeo and Ramn Ramrez net that guy today? Seriously, though. Great story by Terry.
  12. Terry's gotta give him an extra day's rest before the next start. And an erotic massage for that matter. But when his 2011 timetable was for a late-June, early-July return, and then he didn't even get back on the field at all except for a few innings in St. Lucie, it wasn't far-fetched to think it was all over. Who'd've thougth we'd be here now?
  13. metsmarathon wrote: that really was a great takedown on the guy who ran onto the field. That was a little disconcerting, especially with the security wearing old Phillies maroon windbreakers. That wasn't KC getting tackled, was it?
  14. Brilliant, baby. I traded for and signed him, know'wha'm sayin'?
  15. Santana 6.00 Duda 0.91 Wright 0.82 Murphy 0.77 Nieuwenhuis 0.66 Baxter 0.50 Quintanilla 0.21 Torres 0.13
  16. Taking a scandalous moment to check the out-of-town scoreboard, we pretty much had a best case scenario, with Philadelphia beating the Miamis and Atlanta and Washington being rained out, allowing us to pull into a tie with the Fishies and gain a half game on the Natties. We're playing for first place tomorrow. And it's Dickey Day.
  17. Worst defensive team to ever back a Mets pitcher on a no-hitter. In my opinion.

  23. So fantastic. Gwreck starts all threads from now on. Josh Thole catches them all. Put it in the biggest fucking book there is.
