  2. Yeah, that's all fine. As I said, you're perfectly entitled to reject them for their play. But as I said, it's on the verge of tying the longest streak in their history. If that's "extremely poor" then the definition of extreme has changed. Winning percentage wise, I'd imagine the Wilpon-Katz-Wilpon team has been more successful than any managing ownership group in the team's history. It's not saying much, and that's fine, but this endless cycle of fan revolts popping up on site after site and thread after thread. If that's what folks want, great. Baseball rips your heart out. There's no denying it. But perspective is warped enough all over the internet without stretching the facts to fuel our outrage. Somebody's gonna get hurt.
  3. As for "extremely poor" performance, isn't it more fair to call the showing "disappointing," "uninspiring" or maybe "lackluster"? The team has eight straight years of over seventy wins. If they make it a ninth this year (and it certainly looks like they will), that'll tie them for the longest such streak in team history. In itself, that's no big deal. If folks don't want to support such a team, that's great. But it helps to keep perspective.

  5. They could make a lot of fans happy by putting Jeff's picture at the bottom of those dividerless urinals. They could make a lot more fans happy by putting Jeff's head at the bottom of one of those dividerless urinals. Catering to the hate ain't going to work.
  6. I'm making my debut on Tuesday at Nationals Park. Visitor gets a cut of my expenses for the David Wright fund. Thank you for strongarming me, Jeff Wilpon.
  7. Russell Martin, complaining that Laz Diaz wouldn't let him thrown new balls Diaz was putting in play to the pitcher. "He told me I had to earn the privilege," said Martin, a seven-year veteran, three-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. "Even at the end of the game after I get hit in the neck. I'm like, can I throw the ball back now? He's still like no. I'm like you're such a (expletive). Like for real. Unbelievable. I even told him like when there's guys on base, I like to keep my arm loose. No. I'm not letting you throw a ball back. That's pretty strange to me."
  8. Sugarpants, howev, set such a low standard the last few seasons, that him showing the glint of his youthful vigor may have us a little overexuberant in proclaiming his plussiness, no?
  9. Following him all year, I've been. Listening to a lot of Elvin Bishop, too.
  10. Somebody has to be removed from the roster.
  11. Jennry Mejia, Elvin Ramirez, Pedro Beato, and Chris Young. The Mets are desperate, and at least three of these cats are probably going to be added to the roster soon. None count against the 40. Who do you you cut free to make way? Time to deal somebuddy? Put Bay on the 60? DFA Hef? DFA Carson, Egghead, and Schwinden? Forget it. That's it, isn't it?
  12. I have little doubt he's one of the most widely read columnists in New York.
  13. Metsrospectus argues that the Mets have the worst defense in the bigs (which they pretty much did last year). I can't say as I disagree. Only problem is the logical flaw in the thesis: Yes, the Mets are the worst fielding team in baseball and what's worse than that? The fact that if they weren't, we would be in first place and one of the best teams in either league Maybe, but if we weren't, perhaps that would be because we had better defenders who were worse hitters out there. I've got to believe at meaningful level, the Mets, while not aspiring for worse, are fully aware they are giving potential defense up for potential offense.
  14. Well, it's not like LaRussa didn't win three championships, and Whitey Herzog perhaps should have. There are other virtue to a manager. This one just seems like a brass ring for any manager to grasp.
  15. The flip side is that, with managers artificially limiting the duration of outings by their best and better pitchers, there arises the hidden virtue of the patient approach at the plate. Not only can it help you score more now, it can help you score more at the end of the game. Not only can it help you score more at the end of the game, it can help you score more at the end of the series.
  16. Oh to live in a world where Klapisch is exposed when writing in any town above A ball.
  17. Well, then, their choice is to let starters go deeper, relief aces to go longer, and therefore give more good innings to good pitchers. Somebody will be first to look back and learn from it. It might as well be my team.
  18. The chucker also tossed six shutout innings, with both hits he allowed never getting out of the infield.
  19. Maybe. Though I still say supply relative to demand hasn't diminished. Those last two guys are not the way to best use your roster spots, I would certainly argue. And they certainly shouldn't be getting meaningful innings, but spending the majority of their month eating sunflower seeds. I think any diminishution of talent is an illusion caused by an increased percentage of pitchers being allowed to confront higher-leverage situations.
  20. It was sucktastic and (as usual) borderline racist. These shubs were insisting that Beltran never laid himself out for a catch, never climbed the wall in pursuit of an apparent homer. I put together a photo essay of 20 or so URLs of awesome photos of the bird in his glorious flight, Carlos diving left, right, forth, back, showing multiple views of the charge up Tal's Hill and the head-on with Cameron. But the site wasn't taking 'em. I thought "OK, spam protection" so I submitted them five at time, three at a time, one at a time. Nothing. Then I realized, they weren't taking any more of anything from me.
  21. I don't believe there has been a dilution of pitchers at all. A good team used to be able to get the season with eight effective pitchers, the playoffs with seven, the World Series with six. There isn't a dilution of supply but an increase in demand.
  22. Yeah, that's what I mean by "that's all I got." In general, I believe it, but I can't say as it would have necessarily helped us last night, except maybe that more and better relievers would perhaps have been fresher when Gee was pulled. I mean, if that's not Gee but Jim McAndrew tiring, Gil Hodges or Yogi Berra goes to Tug McGraw looking for him to get all seven outs there, and doesn't worrying about building a bridge of three relievers to finish the game. And he doesn't worry too much about not having McGraw tomorrow because he's not trying to become dependent on the bullpen. Ask a little bit more of the starters, and it's a little gift to the relievers. Ask a little bit more of the better relievers, and it's a gift to the lesser ones. Now, of course, they ask more of everybody, by demanding more appearances for shorter stints, and I'm not sure that's really saving their arms.
  23. I got in an Interwebs fight with some haters ripping Carlos after he signed with the Cardinals. After a while, the site stopped taking my comments.
  24. Even when they're winning by 2.785714 runs, we really shouldn't feel good about it until they tack on 1.649069 more,
