  1. Legends on the mound today as Geren's Herons face Teufel's Truffles. Gonzalez Germen, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Rice, Collin McHugh, Elvin Ramirez, Greg Burke, Robert Carson, Brandon Lyon and Pedro Feliciano. LEGENDS! (But where's that serial comma after Brandon Lyon, huh, ESPN?) I predict at least three guys finish the game in the trainer's room, and Rainy Lara gets bumped up to big league camp.
  2. Contribute more to the team in four games in 2011 than in 20 games in 2012. The moral? It's good to take a low-cost flyer on an injured pitcher. Not so much on a twice-injured pitcher.
  3. In order to stay within the 140-character limit, Kevin wrote "walks" when he meant "strikeouts." That's 111 strikeouts and 19 walks. I love my 2012 Brooklyn staff, featuring Hansel Robles. Check out that SO/BB rate by Mateo.
  4. Two signings of guys so fringey and obscure that it's hard to find pictures of them and be certain that I have the right guy. Welcome to the uniform, Andy Wells and James Roche, late of the York Revolution and the Newark Bears, respectively.
  5. Yeah, I figured the Golden Globes are a board of foreigners happy to be here, who celebrate American stuff. Jim Lehrer once said that you could tell American spies from the European ones because the Americans all smoked Galouiises, while the Europeans smoked Marlboros. Sometimes the outsiders are more jingoist than the natives.
  6. Lo Duca never batted leadoff for the Mets either. But yeah, if d'Arnaud maximizes what he is, we're in good shape.
  7. Yeah, but that was for the Pumpsies, Beauchamps, and Grieves, so that's a little different.
  8. Hey, wait now, I'm using it in quotes. POINTS FOR IRONY!
  9. He certainly could have, at least on occasion, but no, he never did. Not even once, according to the IMDB. Jason Kendall is pretty much the only catcher in history to gain any traction as a leadoff hitter. Catchers with 20 or More Games Batting Leadoff in a Season 119 Jason Kendall 2004 90 Jason Kendall 2006 75 Jason Kendall 2005 52 Jason Kendall 2001 51 Jason Kendall 2002 43 Rollie Hemsley 1939 32 Paul Lo Duca 2001 29 Butch Wynegar 1980 24 Kurt Suzuki 2008 20 Russell Martin 2008 17 Russell Martin 2010 Considering nothing in the scouting reports indicates that his speed is any better than typical for a catcher, and his plate discipline is behind his other batting skills, I think it's a safe bet to say that you're gonna be disappointed if you're hoping for him to prosper in that role.
  10. I'd like to see Niese prosper as a cleanup hitter, too, but the number of catchers who've prospered from the leadoff position to any degree is about as high as the number of lefthanded starting pitchers who turned into sluggers batting fourth.
  11. It's not "jipped," but "gypped," as in "swindled by gypsies." Damn cheap-assed, wandering, Romani Wilpons with their price gauging and flamboyant dance traditions.
  12. I'm sorry I made this about Howard. I meant to merely make a passing reference.
  13. I'm curious and I guess a little cynical about who constitutes the best trainers and specialists.
  14. Wanna be a daughter of Dracula Wanna be the son of Frankenstein Let's meet, and have a baby now! -AEv1Pky-qo
  15. I agree. That's why I like that he can make his point without taking himself seriously. He gets stupid early and often and knows it. I mean, I visit the Phillies' website and their starting outfield from left to right is Domonic Brown - Ben Revere - Delmon Young. Not a lot of money in the bank there either. Maybe one of them breaks through. Maybe Laynce Nix or John Mayberry steals a job and runs with it. Maybe Darren Ruf makes the jump from AA. But Phillie phans aren't exactly gloating about the names on their side.
  16. I think the world is better served if a fanboi can write about being disappointed in the team while being a little more self-aware.
  17. But I just did approve. How do I deserve that?
  18. The Triangle at Grantland gives us a broader version of what Megdal might read like with a broader viewpoint reaching further afield. I approve.
  19. Reyes working out with a sledgehammer suddenly starting to make all sorts of sense.
  20. Oh, no, you di'n't!!
  21. Whenever I hear Biogenesis, I think Biohazard is re-uniting, with Phil Collins on drums and producing.
  22. Everth Cabrera, too. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/61167/otl-mets-prospect-puello-f-mart-linked-to-lab Kinda surprised Reyes' name isn't surfacing. Immature, impetuous, a little vain, desperate to get healthy in time for a walk year, releases a video of his workouts with sledgehammers an 'splosions, has the year of his life in his walk year, a little self-justifying, and seemingly naive. Probably either more cunning or more pure than I give him credit for. Maybe both.
  23. I figure that no knee injury ever completely disappears from a guy's ledger.
  24. Did the team have a hostile divorce with Al Jackson? Seven years later and we could have had a shot of Chuck Taylor wearing Chuck Taylors. Great stuff.
  25. Here's ten years' worth: 2012: 975.1 IP by starters (having a CYA winner helps) 2011: 974.0 2010: 972.0 2009: 924.1 2008: 971.0 2007: 940.2 2006: 918.2 2005: 1022.2 (Martinez [31 starts], Glavine [33], Benson [28], Zambrano [27!], Ishii [16], Seo [14], Heilman [7], Trachsel [6]) 2004: 928.2 2003: 921.0 I guess that should be displayed with the bullpen ERAs next to the starters' IP. Maybe later. What a spikey outlier that one year is, though.
