  1. Very confused what happened there. Firstly, nothing forced that ball free. Secondly, secondbase was uncovered --- making that the third straight game with an uncovered base.
  2. I always love the "no finer gentleman in the game" claims. Why are these claims always made in reference to an All-Star? Maybe the finest gentleman in the game is a backup shortstop on the Padres that you've never met and speaks little English. An assitant trainer who has actually taken decorum lessons. An umpire who has studied diplomacy.
  3. "Shelby Miller" puts me in mind of southern gallant who's been paying calls on a certain virtuous young woman. He's handsome but a little too full of himself. And the young woman's maiden aunt is all harumphy. "I don't like that young Mr. Miller," she says with her perpetually consternated brow. "Sure and all, he plays the perfect gentleman, but there's just a way about him that rubs me right wrong."

It may be part of the game but it hasn't been effective and it's as boring as when I'd watch my daughters play little league age "Fast pitch" softball and 2/3's of the kids would go up to the plate without ever attempting to swing the bat...I'd tell my kids, "I didn't pay $80 and take vacation time from work to watch you not swing the bat"...and my daughter that pitched knew that she better throw strikes otherwise I would go to the snack bar while she was pitching... I'll take effective.
  5. Striking out Carpenter is not easy to do. Marcum failing to shit bed tonight. Let's get some runzzzzZZZ.
  6. It's nice to see a ballpark with the seats behind the plate filled.
  7. According to St. Louis announcers, only 25 MLB players have college degrees. Carpenter and Craig representing for St. Louis.
  8. It's part of the game. And beats the latter. The Mets failed to score because of a double play on a well-struck line drive, not because they are unwilling to hit the ball. If you need a scapegoat, Knot's right. It's Huckabuck's baserunning. (If they didn't get Buck, they could have gotten Ankiel off-base also.)
  9. I don't care. I'm sticking to that story.
  10. That bloop single by Ankiel is the beginning of our luck turning. Pennant coming.
  11. So, the draft isn't just some random crapshoot that's not worth analyzing or working yourself up over?
  12. I wonder if there's video of Deion Sanders as a rookie with the Yankees when Carlton Fisk chased him down to first base... for being a disgrace to the Yankees.
  13. I'll go with Doomsymbol.
  14. Those tend to suck. Let's get him something so awesome, he'll turn into a badass just by hearing it. Come up with something crazy and dark metal like "The Skin of Evil." Baxter, rfMurphy, 2bWright, 3bDavis, 1bDuda, lfBuck, cAnkiel, cfTejada, ssS&M, spCarpenter, 3bBeltran, rfHolliday, lfeCraig, 1bJay, cfCruz, cDescalzo, 2bKozma, ssMiller, p
  15. I think the guy needs a nickname: Nominations sought. I offer... [list:19hpm1vo][*:19hpm1vo]Magic Marcum[/*:m:19hpm1vo] [*:19hpm1vo]The Last Resort[/*:m:19hpm1vo] [*:19hpm1vo]S&M[/*:m:19hpm1vo][/list:u:19hpm1vo]
  16. Marcum retired his last four in a row in his last start, before getting pulled early for Rob Carson. For all we know, hadn't he been lifted, he'd have gotten 27 in a row too. So there's that.
  17. I think he was looking over his left shoulder, when he realized the break of the ball had taken it over his right. He tried to recover by turning around and BAM, turned out the wall was right in front of him at that moment.
  18. Yeah, he seemed to have little idea where either the ball or the wall was. He was trying to recover from his bad break and bam, there it was.
  19. Well, (1) nobody is realistically arguing for outright releases and nobody is seriously arguing that all three should/could be replaced simultaneously. So let's not distort the issue.
  20. Well, I think their (dead)spin puts this more as a Met-generated shitstorm rather than a hyper-reactionary one. (And wouldn't an actual shitstorm be a really bad place to be?)
  21. "Hi, guys. Gun to your head: Salt or Pepa? Could all three of you answer, please? And 'Spinderella' is not an acceptable answer."
  22. Oh, and it was a second at-bat he asked out of. Wow. How cool would it have been if Terry said "no good meddling kids"? Very.
  23. Mike Francesa. Bucket called it.
  24. Warren Spahn has a significant sample of success too. Eventually it's more about what you've done lately. I imagine any bumped from the rotation won't be planned as a permanent jetisonning, but the plan has to be to win games, so you've got to try something. And McHugh's lack of success as a big leaguer so far is quite comparable to the recent performance of most of the Mets' starting rotation. This is part of what really made Casey Stengel stand out, I think. The general attitude about managers is to show loyalty by sticking with his guys through rough spells. His notion was that loyalty was best shown by giving his team the best chance to win every day, and he was so quick to pull a starter from the rotation that his starting staff was usually Ford, Reynolds (mostly), and whoever was hot. That may not be why he won, but he had the greatest run of any manager ever with that policy. So I'm in favor of swapping out starters pretty liberally. I'm with Casey.
  25. I'll put this in the same non-starter category that I put the campaign to award Derek Jeter an MVP that he didn't deserve as a career honor. I mean, no misbegotten glory grab is beyond the reach of the Yankees, but getting excited about a campaign while it's still in the hands of a blogger may give it more of a profile than it deserves. And "Billy Ball" was a term coined to reflect Billy Martin's management of the A's, not the Yankees.
