  1. Remember also when Steven Strasburg was "over and washed up"? Or when they were saying the same things about Jordan Zimmermann? Or Kerry Wood? Or Adam Wainwright? Or when [insert the name of every other young pitcher who has ever had an injury and corrective surgery] was too? Tommy F. John, himself, f'rinstance.
  2. Thanks, Greg, for taking the time to do what I wanted to. That was a really weak job, unworthy of his tracksuit to be sure, and it's hard to believe that it comes from a seasoned sportswriter and veteran of the Mets beat. If that was a blogger's column, it would be an embarrassment to the rest of the smattering.
  3. I'm guessing his name is some variation or nickname off of Ranier.
  4. Mets prospect Bradley Marquez got an unusual signing bonus. The Mets agreed to let him go to Texas Tech and play football, but he gets more money if he sticks to the one sport. By leaving Kingsport and going to school to report for summer football practice, Marquez leaves a quarter million on the table. Sucky part is that lower level minor leagues don't start until June, so Marquez, in switching to the gridiron for the second half of the summer, didn't really get a lot of competitive reps in. His numbers, such as they are, don't say much, but the Mets must like him at least a little, seeing as they let him sport this look.
  5. Rainy's the best. All the kids are into him, his beautiful emo name, and his career 4.51 SO/BB ratio. Know what I like in a pitcher? Facial distortions as the arm comes forward that make the pitcher look 20-25 years older. Gooden had that. Pedro had that. Rainy got that.
  6. Roger McDowell, Bobby Ojeda, Doug Sisk, Wally Backman, Kevin Elster, Danny Heep, Rafael Santana, Tim Teufel, Mookie Wilson. Teufel's best year was as the dark half of a platoon (though he got a lot of extra-platoonical duty as that season progressed). Of the rest, I'd say that Sisk, Ojeda, Backman, Elster, and Wilson all had at least one AS-quality season.
  7. Rainy Lara demands respect!
  8. You've been embarrassing to your party, your city, your state, and not least of all, your family. Spare my ball team, Congressman MLDB, and take the Mets colors of your campaign.
  9. I don't think that's negigible, but it has to be weighted against the likelihood of success, and bunting success rates are not something I've ever seen good data on. Intuitively, I'd say almost nobody bunts well enough to make the 5% bump worth it. But what really matters isn't the expectancy for one run versus the expectancy for two or more, but rather the win expectancy. If you don't know that, it's hard to determine whether an increased chance at one is worth a decreased chance of two or more. I'd say maybe, but again, the success likelihood of the bunter is crucial to the decision.
  10. Could he say one more time that Mejia was done? Clearly, that was an open questoin. Another person in the organization, speaking candidly because of a truth serum called anonymity, said, he is farther along than Wheeler, at least with the secondary pitches. He doesnt have the velocity that Wheeler has, but has way better command. Until the seventh inning yesterday, Wheels had all the command you could hope for.
  11. Here are two Topps vendor retail boxes from 1970. This one features a generic Met: If I was told that was modeled on an actual 1969 Met, and had to geuss which one, I'd go with Ken Boswell --- or more specifically, Ken Boswell committing harikari with the jagged point of his broken bat.
  12. Agreed deeply. Funny how the theme is now that the Mets won't strategically spend less money.
  13. Yes, they have a chance at third.
  14. Who will not be a Met this time tomorrow night? You are being held to your predictions, so don't just say some crazy thing. In fact, heck with it, for every wrong prediction, you have to send a dollar to the person (or persons) who were right. That's the stuff.
  15. I don't know. I mean, I'm against bunting, but let's not fall into the notion that who Lagares had been earlier in the evening against other pitchers (actually 3-3, with a walk, not 4-4) define who he was at that moment. As for walking the Q, well, there was a whole lot to be said for setting up the double play. Extra-innings are full of such stuff. That marathon against St. Louis that should have been Jerry Manuel's last game, it was going on all night. Guy reaches base, guy gets bunted over, next guy walked to set up double play.
  16. Satin over Brown here? I guess going for contact over the clout. But contact could mean a DP. Go for the fly-ball guy.
  17. I'm not so sure I resist the temptation to pinch-hit for Buck here either.
  18. Even the grass stain on Stanton's chest looks fugly.
  19. And now we go keeping our closer in reserve.
  20. Turner as the pinch-hit leadoff guy. Underwhelming. But leadoff guys reaching is over-rated.
  21. Might've done a double switch if the team had defensible defense from their backup shortstop.
  22. I'm gonna come out against trading Wheeler. And Harvey. And pretty much everybody else.
  23. Wheeler come out for the bottom of the inning?
