  1. In 115 at-bats in the Dominican Winter League: .200 / .252 / .261 // .513. Gulp.
  2. Never had a game to regret at Shea. Not that I can recall anyhow --- in part, I guess, because I couldn't front the funds for big ticket games like those described above. I recall a cold home opener in 1984, with Gary Carter grandslamming for the wrong team. A 10-0 loss knocks the team out of an early season perch in first. But I was cutting school with my buddies, and I met Bobby Valentine and Jim Wolford, and had a good ol' time. Had some unhappy days at Nationals Park, though.
  3. I've probably mentioned this but I had a chance to spend an evening with Kathleen Howard. I had adored her all through college, but the timing never worked out. She was wit' somebody when I was not, and vice versa. So we make plans to meet. It was going to be after work, but something came up and she was going to work late. "Catch a movie after work and I'll see you after," she says. I "catch" a movie called Short Cuts and damn it, but the time I get up to Morningside Heights afterwards, she's in her pajamas. Robert Altman was not my best buddy.
  4. Buchek belts a grand slam while Reynolds is bouncing a grounder? I don't think so.

Totally agree. Plus he dismisses "bloggers" ON HIS FUCKING BLOG WHICH IS ALL HE HAS BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE A REAL JOB. Idiot. And he cites as "support" a crazed "fan" who wants to carpet bomb the whole process by excluding anybody from the "steroids era" (as if that's got a clear beginning and end), clearly an attitude Chass doesn't share. It's a sad state that has so many acting like such children.
  6. And then he dismisses "bloggers" (Craig Calcaterra) for re-using somebody else's stuff, which he does while citing Craig Calcaterra's blog as a source he feels no need to follow up on.
  7. Much better.

  9. Orioles also use the apostrophe: As have the Mariners:
  10. A traditional use of apostrophes is to pluralize entities known by a single letter. "As" not only looks funny, but it leads your mind to attempt to pronounce it as "as."
  11. "Mets fans are angry." "The Mets' fans are angry." Both are fine. The latter implies something different in the relationship, though.
  12. The team name is plural. There should be no apostrophe, in general. The relationship isn't really possessive.
  13. My dad had his own parking space at King's Plaza. He broke up a ring of robberies there, and as a thank you, the managers and merchants had a brief ceremony and surprised him with this special reward. He took the presenter aside briefly afterwards and told him he couldn't possibly accept this honor. It was illegal enough in general, but after the Serpico hearings, anything that smelled of graft would have been a serious threat to his career. But they had marked the spot as reserved and left it that way. So, occasionally we would go by King's Plaza and I would ask, like an annoying kid always does, "Is THAT your spot, Dad? Is THAT it?" as we circled looking for a real spot. He was a cop, so he probably could have left his car, idling, anywhere he wanted, but he couldn't use that damn spot. I remember going to Kings Plaza at Christmas time, and there were no available spots, and we circled and circled with the rest of the dopes and my Dad's head was turning red and building up pressure and ready to blow. Couldn't take the chance that another cop would spot his green VW wagon in his personal grafty-grafty spot. It taunted him.
  14. The ballot won't and shouldn't get tossed.

That's why I was putting the "like" qualifier in there. I have no idea if he's the worst and I really don't want to spend the time trying to prove it --- look at the less-than-explosive response I got to my frankly excellent work on the Morales-vs.-Duda-vs.-Davis question --- but I feel confident that he's down there with the fakirs and phonies when it comes to shortstop defense. It's silly, but I personally would feel better defensively with Wright at short.
  16. I was trying to speak to his general defensive aptitude.
  17. Turner was a terrible shortstop. He probably improved with is his reps in 2013, but he was like worst-in-the-league bad. He didn't help the team there.

  19. I'm too sexy for this poll Too sexy for this poll For Rocky or Krane or for Kroll
  20. Starting to feel more and more like the statements that the team is ready to go with Tejada are as much bluffing as they are preparing the fan base for disappointment. I mean, they have to bring in some meaningful alternatives, if not because of this 2013 stuggles, but because he finished the season with a broken leg. They might accomplish nothing in pursuit of Drew except submitting a bid for another team to exceed, but they will almost certainly at least either bring in a cheap vet or trade for a pre-arbitration prospect they see as league-ready.
  21. I don't think there are many voters who differentiate between a period of "allowable" steroid use and a period of prohibition. If they don't like you using, they don't like you using in 1998 just as much as 2008.
  22. Well, the presence of Duda and Satin would certainly give them a much more ready pair o' fallback plans.
  23. Also, he comes into the game as "Kendry," gets spectacuarly hurt and misses 1 2/3 seasons, and then comes back as "Kendrys"? that's a huge red flag there.
  24. Looking at the movement to bring in Kendrys Morales, as expressed in another thread, I took the ten most comparable batters to Kendrys Morale (as per baseball-reference.com) through age 30 and put them up side-by-side with the ten most similar to to Duda through 27 and Davis through 26, and for each of the coming three years, the data favors Davis and Duda. While the bottom line offers nothing conclusive, it's conclusive enough to discourage me from investing tens of millions at first when deeper needs lie elsewhere. While the Mets may not have a wealth of talent at first, Alderson's contention that he has a glut is correct, and the players in that glut certainly still have value, as weary as we may have grown of them. And man, dividing by 10 is easy. 25. Problem is that in a decade or so, the window will have closed for many, and quite possibly closed on a player or two or six that are both clean and historically deserving --- or would have been considered deserving in any other context. So no, don't panic, but do keep the heat on people using bad logic.
