For the rest maybe they could get one of those butter carvings they do at midwestern state fairs. Number retirement is the greater honor, I think, as available numbers is a more finite set than available places for statues.

Hero of the Day has to be Matt Bowman, whose 11 strikeouts allow him to edge even an impressive Steven Matz outing. Goat of the Day looks like Gavin Cecchini, whose four trips as leadoff batter for Savannah resulted in a failure to reach base, 2 strikeouts, a poor showing at the plate compounded by two errors on defense, one with the glove and one with the arm. Hang in there, Gavin. There'll be better days!
  4. Las Vegas beats Reno 6-0 tonight, with Dana Eveland going the first five innings of the shutout to get the win, and Allan Dykstra going 2-4 with a homer and a double. Wilmer F. Flores got a double a triple and three RBI of his own.
  5. Just so we're clear, I was there that night also, and I was prepared to take down Clinton if he approached Mr. Met. You can never be too careful. Just so we're clear.

  7. 14-9 with a 2.86 ERA in his last 26 starts, dating back to last season. He may be a pitcher.
  8. Are we speaking of Tejada? Or somebody else in particular?
  9. Yeah, but the explosives or noxious gas dispensers that he could hide in his head! All the while, smiling... smiling... . Have you never seen a Bond film?!
  10. .417 / .588* / .625 // 1.213 through 10 games and 34 plate appearances. Surely some of this must translate at the big league level. * Leads all affiliated American baseball.
  11. New York: 8-7, Las Vegas: 11-3, Binghamton: 7-4, St. Lucie: 7-6, Savannah: 9-4 All active teams in the organization are over .500. Net total: 42-24, .636
  12. Meanwhile, give Joe Nolan a microphone and book him for a week at The Laff Factory, amirite?
  13. I feel like a tougher guy just for having looked into Gary Kolb's face and walked away.
  14. Hanrahan's surgery was in May, so he's not quite a year out. Reports have the team scheduled to scout him again tomorrow. Who knows? With the day off, maybe Terry and/or Warthen will be part of the scouting party. But yeah, even if they like him and sign him, he'd be pretty much a month or more away from closing a close game for the Mets, even under the best-case scenario.
  15. No explicit quotes, but... C says he'll stick with Valverde as closer April, 16, 2014 7:30 PM ET By Adam Rubin | ESPNNewYork.com PHOENIX -- Jose Valverde has now surrendered homers to three of the last eight batters he has faced. Still, Collins unequivocally said after Valverde's lackluster showing Wednesday that if there is a one-run lead Friday against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field, Valverde will be inserted for that save situation. Valverde, working with a five-run lead in the ninth, surrendered inning-opening homers to Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt, forcing Collins to have Carlos Torres and Daisuke Matsuzaka up in the bullpen. Valverde allowed two hits and three hits in the inning, but finally recorded the third out as the Mets swept the D-backs with a 5-2 victory. "The only concern is if my team wins, I'm happy," Valverde said. "That's it." Wednesday's performance came on the heels of Valverde allowing a game-tying three-run homer to Raul Ibanez with two outs in the ninth inning Saturday in Anaheim. Collins tried to excuse Wednesday's performance as it being difficult for a closer to build up his adrenaline when the Mets tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth to open a 5-0 lead. Valverde also shrugged off the two-homer appearance that lifted his ERA to 6.14. Terry more or less has to say the job is unequivocally Jose's right up until the time it goes to somebody else, so it's hard to be too angry there. The adrenaline thing is a greater aggravation. Though I imagine there's at least a shred of truth to it, it should never be uttered again. It's red meat to the haters, and it'll be spun as Valverde being another fat lazy prima donna, even though the quote came from Collins.
  16. Yabbut, saying fie on Val only gets us part of the way there. What next? I know Ashie is hot for Joel Rehabrahan. I know no answers. The only keys I have to good bullpens is to hit a lot, have good starting pitching, and have managers with slow hooks --- three elements that keep the burden off the pens.
  17. There's still lots to like about Valverde. He throws strikes and stuff, but he's no LaTroy Hawkins. Nay. He's not even a LaTroy McClure. I can't imagine after he threw a can of gas on the end of the road trip this afternoon, the Mets can comfortably confront the prospect of the entire season with him as the top reliever. It's one thing when your number one guy goes down in July or August and you turn with a prayer to floating veteran like Hawkins or Aardsma or Luis Ayala or somebody, but going to that well on opening day and living with the results whatever they may be? Neh. So, they don't have to solve this problem in time for this weekend or anything, but you've got to imagine they are talking at length. Who next? Germen? Farny? Jeurys or Rice? Diasuke? DeGrom? Is Black back? I want to say boo on Terry for pulling Gee with a shutout. He should have at least gotten to start the eighth, but Terry might well have known something I do not. (I for instance, didn't know the Cubs were playing the Yankees.)
  18. No hitter smashed. What did Keith do? Did it involve boobies?
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: White Sox are doing fine. It's the stinko Cubs at MFY Stadium this week. Well, then OK. It's a lot to ask of the Cubs. But come on, baseball, the Yankees aren't going to lose 100 games by themselves!
  20. Speaking of which, if the White Sox care a whit for Robin Ventura, they better turn it around against the Yankees. If they care, in fact, for all that is good and holy.
  21. Wasn't the Seinfeld tribute night something of a non-starter?
  22. Ike Davis singles. I'm supporting the team and buying a ticket to The Adventures of the Three-Headed Firstbaseman.
  23. America voted for David Wright as the Face of Baseball. David Wright voted for Anthony Recker.
  24. Nieuie is a baseball-playing machine tonight.
  25. Cyclone Ollie looks great.
