  1. I'm all over e-bay looking to complete this set:
  2. If the author knows Nellie, maybe he was waxing with comic exaggeration about the Man from Planet Unibrow.
  3. ="The Queens Chronicle"]Figueroa will have big shoes to fill because Ojeda was popular with fans and the media because of his refreshing candor. He could never be accused of being a shill for the home team. Having gotten to know Nelson over the years, I am certain that he will be insightful and will never insult anyones intelligence. SNY executives are undoubtedly hoping that his matinee idol looks will draw more women to Mets telecasts.
  4. Matt Harvey fell from 5.5 WAR in 2013 to 0.0 in 2014, and the team improved by five games. Dwight Gooden fell from 12.1 WAR in 1985 to 4.4 in 1986, and the team improved by 10 games (and 10 games between 98 wins and 108 are a hard 10 games to take). I'd hesitate to link the outcome one way or another to the fate of any one starting pitcher at this point.
  5. That's the first I heard that Dandy was a bird. He always looked like a fuzzy, anthropomorphic bowling pin to me. The fact that he was designed by the same person(s) who did winners like Youppi! and The Phanatic (and Piggy!) makes his disastrous tenure all the more meaningful.
  6. Well, that's the thing, since Syndergaard is currently the seventh starter (or possibly eighth, at this moment in time), the team has a lot of redundancy to shore up the four-hole.
  7. I'd hang onto the team with my teef.
  8. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I say David Wright. A big bounceback from him is key. Even if Harvey doesn't throw a single pitch in 2014, the Mets still have a deep starting rotation (Colon-Niese-Wheeler-deGrom-Gee-Syndergaard-Montero-Matz) but if Wright only drives in 60 runs this year, the Mets likely won't score nearly enough runs to win many games. I hope Harvey pitches like he did in 2013, but I'm really not expecting it at all. Don't forget Darin Gorski!
  9. This article about UT's Bubba Trammell's return to baseball is behind a paywall. I can't tell you what the bulk of the thing says, but my search engine does share with me this Metsy bit. He hit a pair of home runs in the 2000 World Series as a member of the New York Mets. How do I find a portal into the alternative universe where that's true?
  10. I hate to name the highest-profile guy, but I think this year's key Met may be David Wright a broad and relatively flat range of possible outcomes, high stakes in him being the number-three hitter, and little in the way of alternatives (if Wright goes down again, it's either Campbell or Flores with Tejada moving to short). David Wright: my key Met for 2015. He's the center pole on the tent, and if that holds, the ones around the outside won't be as prone to collapse. Any list of the keys, though, has to include Flores. Beyond them, I see Duda and Mejia. Least key player is probably almost always the backup catcher. Sorry, Anthony. Other projected benches (Niewenberry and Campjada) share this fate. Also not a key Met: Daniel Murphy. He's got a range of outcomes stacked toward the middle, not a necessarily key part of the offense or defense, and meaningful alternatives are in place. I'd say that Colon isn't key, and Gee hardly looks to be a key if they can't find a job for him.
  11. Put them against a grid. Like they're being computer generated humans on a holodeck grid. Could you get more 1992?
  12. The interesting part to me are Matz's upward trend, as some have more trust in him putting the injuries and missed time behind him, and Montero's downward trend, as some are more concerned about his initial MLB misfires than others. I'm trying to stay encouraged that Montero is an MLB pitcher of some sort, as his failures so far were rife with bad control, and that's like his lead skill, and I'm trying to think it's unlikely that it's abandoned him.
  13. Caleb's still only 32. I say we give him a minor league deal.
  14. Rosario and Smith make MLB.com's supplemental list. Score!
  15. Last word I found was that it went to mediation. I assume that led to an undisclosed settlement with a gag order and blahblahblah, but I can't find an announcement to that effect.
  16. OK, folks don't expect Johan to miss that much time. (And lose that much effectiveness upon returning from injury.) But how much time should we expect him to miss? How much effectiveness did we expect him to lose. Because after Johan and Pedro and Wagner and Rodriguez, a team has to go into these contracts with pitchers expecting that a pitcher at X age is, on average, going to miss Y time and decline by Z amount. Eyes open! Don't be taken by surprise when what tends to happen happens! What is the baseline? Don't like 20% of all pitchers suffer a catastrophic injury (defined, perhaps, as two months or more missed) every season? A six- or seven-year contract a full freight with any pitcher is a game of Russian Roulette. Sooner or later, there's going to be a bullet in that chamber. POW! Interestingly, his Wikipedia page says nothing about the sexual assault allegations. How was that ultimately resolved?
  17. I do know Carlos is not yet a member of Puerto Rican Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, though Carlos Muoz, member of the Beach Boys' touring act from 1970 to 1981, will be inducted in 2015, and his name is kinda like 2007-2008 Mets reliever Carlos Muniz.
  18. Wilson Delgado, not so much.
  19. WOR ANNOUNCES 2015 METSSPRING TRAINING BROADCAST SCHEDULE. Boom!
  20. Seems to give Omar more of a punch than Sandy. The notion that Sandy shouldn't be making predictions is well taken, though.
  21. Well, it doesn't take Sabermetrics to come to the conclusion that $23 million a year for a guy injured and unavailable one day in two is not the best way to spread your money around.
  22. To get a 17-year career out of being a first baseman without power, you'd better bring something else to the table. Ron Hunt-like.
  23. Bergman was also AKA the Master of the Hidden Ball Trick: Alan Wiggins: [youtube:i2b27bt9]V8sJ8AAKag4[/youtube:i2b27bt9] Ozzie Guillen: [youtube:i2b27bt9]vLVH3sxZt0s[/youtube:i2b27bt9]
  24. Them's some suspiciously low numbers for Castellanos and Monell, especially considering Nimmo is still in the stratosphere.
  25. Skin in the game. But given a month to get their angle, that quote is about the only new thing the Times has.
