Sounds like the last arrow in the dream of a Reyes boomerang this offseason.
-
When did that hap?

Me too. It's not so much the difference in WAR between the two packages. Yeah, the package the Mets sent away is worth more, even though that's all Gomez and you've got to wait five seasons before he explodes. Who knows what happens between 2008 and then. It's not so much the needing four roster slots to earn it. I mean, maybe the Mets bury Humber or trade him off or release him without letting him stink up the rotation. It's definitely the zillion dollars he got paid to himself. Even considering the weak free agent crop that offseason --- mostly guys under clouds (A-Rod, Bonds, Andruw) and big namers drawing their last check (Glavine, Maddux). There had to have been better uses for the munny (including saving it for the rainy day that was coming). But if you've got to blow you're nut then and there, there are less risk-intensive ways, maybe. The Diamondbacks put together a lesser package for Dan Haren. SWEET! The Tigers put together a package that offseason for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. Traded for Miggy and turned around and signed him for less than Johan. NICE! That wasn't the only stumble of the day. That same offseason included the awarding of the Luis Castillo contract and the trade of Milledge for Church and Schneider (which is historically defensible if the Mets turn around and release the Schneid the next day). Just so many chips went down on the table in Omar's last gasps 2008 and 2009, and the the team is still paying.

Sure, but they didn't trade the entirety Gomez's career. They traded his next five seasons. Now in there is the added bonus that the Twins (and then the Brewers) had exclusive right to extend him beyond that contract (which the Brews ultimately did). So, philosophically, I wouldn't say you're wrong to count that. That's just not how I framed it. But right now, the only difference we're talking about is Gomez's 2014 the one season of the one guy who made it to his free agency-eligible years. That's another 4.4 WAR.
-
So, amazingly, with Sandy Alderson at #12, Frank Cashen at #10, and likely Bing Devine and George Weiss ahead of them, the Mets will have had four of the top 12 GMs of all time, but mostly at the less-than-ideal stage of their respective careers. I don't know if Herzog will make the list, but obviously they had him at the wrong time also.

batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy: Why would you limit your WAR post to simply Mets v Twins? Who cares whether the Mets bested the Twins or vice versa in that trade? Is that the issue? Isn't that taking a narrow view? I didn't. I limited the WAR count to the end of the term of control the player had when the deal occurred. What I care about is whether the Santana trade-and-sign worked out for the Mets. It's debatable, but I'd say no.

Seven years ago, the Mets got Johan Santana for three pitchers and a speedy outfielder. Final Score in terms of Baseball-Reference WAR: Santana: 15.6 Phil Humber: -0.1 (before leaving Minnesota as a free agent) Kevin Mulvey: -0.6 Deolis Guerrera: 0.0 Carlos Gomez: 16.6 (through 2013, after which he finished his pre-free agency years) Total: Twins (and successive employers) 15.9, Mets 15.6 The Mets could still be framed as winners, considering it took four contracts and four roster spots to clear their total, but considering the investment monetarily, it's probably solid win for the Twins (or the Brewers, depending on how you look upon it).

There we go. George Vecsey should know better. His lost ball in the sun we've spoken about. The stumble on the base paths was ultimately harmless. Most importantly, he drove in the winning run in the 12th inning off of a Hall of Fame pitcher in one of his best seasons after suckering the catcher into calling for the pitch he wanted.

Duda and the Mets agree to a $4.2 million salary and a 4.2-inch beard length. Payroll now over $100 million.

The RICO Act: Rico Brogna and Mets in Retirement, 2015

We all know Quintanilla made exactly 31 trips to the plate in 2014, right?
-
Well, he hasn't really been a Met since he got sent down about five weeks into the season.

I didn't remember unliking this film a much as my contributions to this thread suggest I did.
-
I liked that he looked heavy lidded and timeless simultaneously young and athletic and old and wise. Like a sage advisor in a martial arts film who sits on a pillow in his dojo dispensing shrewd but elusive wisdom, but when the climax comes, and his dojo has been invaded and damaged and his students broken, slowly stands up, keeps his cool despite provocative and sadistic desecration, removes his robe, and beats up everybody in the room. That's what Omar meant to me.
-
I have fewer memories of his second stint than I had of his first. But good luck to him in Colorado. First I realize that he's not in a crouch. Then I realize he's only a few feet behind the infield lip. Last I realize he's holding his glove in his throwing hand. Well, I'm just gonna come right out and say it: That shortstop does not respect Omar's hitting abilities.

Thus begins the dramatic "Post Quintanilla Period" an epoch of such chillingly unknown quantities that the Mets have spent three seasons avoiding its ascendence. Still on the market is the not-so-young-anymore Eric Young. Our shortstop insurance for the better part of the last three seasons, signed away by Colorado. Whatever one may say about the guy, he seems to leave a lot of goodwill behind him, as he's returning to he team he played all or parts of the first five seasons of his career. Just like he boomeranged back from Baltimore to our squad.

That cinnamon thing is gonna come back at you, DJ. It's gonna come back hard.

It's certainly that, but, well... he does get off his leash, if you know what I mean. He also tools around on a motor scooter... [fimg=350]http://blog.immortalance.net/wp-content/gallery/reign-over-me/2007_reign_over_me_001.jpg[/fimg] ... with a hair style he seems to have picked up at a Bob Dylan yard sale. [fimg=350]http://www.sharewallpapers.org/d/418186-1/2007+Reign+Over+Me+009.jpg[/fimg] A lot of notable supporting actors, including Liv Tyler, who still seems in every scene like she's on the verge of crying.

Solid, unspectacular film with familiar themes. Great shots of New York streets where the crowds are just small enough and there really isn't a lot of threat and aggression lingering in the air, allowing you to just notice stuff. In other words, a New York that doesn't really exist except from about 4:006:30 AM. Solid presences of veteran actors, including Melinda Dillon the mother in A Christmas Story obsessing over a lamp. I don't think this was an intended irony, but it turned out to be one. Like in JFK, Donald Sutherland and his commanding voice show up to move things along when they start dragging.

Gee, it's been great but you have 7-10 days to pack

I think I need to make this my life's work ending "Like Willie Mays at the end of his career with the Mets" as the go-to analogy for writing about people hanging around too long. First of all, there's no shame in hanging around too long. I myself have been hanging around too long since I was about six. You want the old guy off the stage? You out-perform him, period. For another, it's fact-poor. Any good analysis says, "he did good in his first year, got hurt in his second, and hung 'em up, but not before doing his best for his team in an unlikely World Series run." Plus, there's this strange value of "going out on one's own terms." Why is putting down your spear and going back to the tent really such a better thing than taking arrows for your side until you drop? Beyond that, Willie held a press conference and retired at the end of the season, just like Jeter, and just like Ripken, and just like all those other "on their own terms" guys. Lastly, Jeter sucked far more down the home stretch than Willie on his worst day. Did far more damage to his team's aspirations.

Post o' the month, right there. Way to sneak in and steal a talented, stupid, stupid kid, Mets.
