  1. The original story, from Newsday, suggests a more indicting tone from Reyes, that the "something wrong" clearly is (or was ) Tejada's attitude. Reyes has trimmed his chin fray and let his mustache come in, and looks less rabbinical. The subtextual thesis that's crying out there is that Reyes apparently knew his whole last season that he was going to bail.
  2. If he takes a step forward, and performs like a the leadoff hitter the Mets feel they can turn him into, they will be an unstoppable beast. I certainly believe it's possible. He's got a quick bat, and, well, they turned Duda into a cleanup hitter last year. Development is possible at the big league level. But they better have a plan B that's a little more reliable if not as ambitious. I guess that's Granderson.
  3. His approach certainly changed after he hit the leadoff spot last year. The results didn't change much, but I was at least happy he was a willing student. Working with late-bloomers seem to be almost an organizational philosophy.
  4. I could really go for some Straticon Construction Services. Wife doesn't understand why. I tell her it's because I have the strength to be there. She thinks I'm weird.
  5. Sandy Alderson's first (and perhaps worst) free agent signing DJ Carassco is in New Zealand, preaching the baseball gospel.
  6. Hints out there in reports that the Mets are strongly considering Colon for their opening day start, with the report stating that the choice has been narrowed down to him and one other non-specified pitcher. (Marcos Molina!) In the absence of stronger information, I'm cautiously running with it. Congratulations to our third opening-day starter since the offseason began. 7. I'm just a font of information this morning about new installments of films by folks just fresh plum out of new ideas. But I guess by sharing the info, I prove the point, sequels are smart business because they promote themselves. Harrison Ford to star in Blade Runner sequel
  8. I actually posted a Rocky/Rambo treatment on the forum way back when.
  9. Definitely a better tagline than "The Best Human Values Never Change." Strange how, despite scoffing at him for Rocky IV and Rocky V, I now find part of me rooting for him in his audaciousness, a limited talent milking his single good idea for all it's worth and then some. Stallone neither writes nor directs, but is one of seven producers and presumably gets a cut of the writer's share for creating some of the characters. But isn't that what a successful old man gets to do? Turn the empire he built over to younger men while still getting a big partner's cut?
  10. Hi, I'm Juan Lagares, and I'm capable of giving a team 3.0–3.5 WAR just using my legs, my arm, and my glove. Not too many defenders out there (none?) can say the same. But let's be honest. How long am I going to be pulling that off? Sooner or later, I'm going to have to hit. Till then, watch me on defense. [fimg=450]http://cdn2.vox-cdn.com/imported_assets/2321248/Lagares2.gif.opt_.gif[/fimg] [fimg=450]http://gamereax.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/lagaras.gif[/fimg] [fimg=450]http://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/assets/4665773/2014-05-27-lagares-catch.gif[/fimg] [fimg=450]http://38.media.tumblr.com/14f3da1a719208f7533f3a55a9087228/tumblr_n2rc2yCgzR1ro5xweo1_400.gif[/fimg] It's fun to be that guy! But a man's got to bat too, and I aims to do more with that wooden thing. What do you think I'll be able to accomplish in 2015?
  11. COMING THIS THANKSGIVING. Rocky Balboa trains Apollo Creed's son, because... new ideas are really hard.
  12. [list:11z83x8d][*:11z83x8d]Carl Erskine: Wrong uniform, but right number. I'd be curious to learn if they just pulled that uniform out of Felix Millan's locker. Felix wasn't long for those threads. Less than a month later, another man in the stadium that day Ed Ott would be bringing his career to a screeching halt. [/*:m:11z83x8d] [*:11z83x8d]Old Phil Mazi, comes with his old catchers mitt and refuses to put it down during introductions. Reason why is he doesn't trust that sketchy-lookin' Ed Ott. [/*:m:11z83x8d] [*:11z83x8d]Jim McAndrew (MACAndrew to hear Lindsey say it) looks like Nolan Ryan's brother. [/*:m:11z83x8d] [*:11z83x8d]Did they really introduce Bill Bevens by replaying the old radio call of him losing a World Series no-hitter and the game all at once? Why not project a shot of his wife with another man on the scoreboard?[/*:m:11z83x8d][/list:u:11z83x8d]
  13. Early observations: [list:1c62qqsk][*:1c62qqsk]How about Ralph, still identifying enough with the Bucs that he's hanging out in their dugout chatting up Kent Tekulve before the game? [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]The 1977 PA sounds just about shot to hell. What a perfect representation of the Torre-era upkeep. [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]Lindsay's jacket represents something akin to evening ware. And he's out there in mid-90s whether and not breaking a sweat. [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]Hey, no representation from some dudes from The Tri-City Ford Lincoln Mercury Dealers! [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]People politely tolerate the first few execs, but Bill Shea gets some hardy applause. [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]Ron Taylor, described as such an intellectual achiever, and then they cut to him, and he's looking like an indifferent carpenter, wiping his nose on his arm, and the residue onto his pants leg. You can take the man out baseball, but... I think of Ron Hodges and wonder if 42 was just cursed to be a number for the uncouth Mets. [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]Joe Pignatano is behind Taylor sucking down a TAB. No wonder he's lived so long. [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]Hank Bauer's thick glasses take only some of the effect off what was one of the meanest-lookin' grills in baseball back in the day. I wonder if he intimidated the skinny long-haired 19-year-old escorting him. He intimidates me. [/*:m:1c62qqsk] [*:1c62qqsk]Moe Drabowsky, who strangely left the Orioles after 1968 but returned for 1970 (maybe he's the reason we won!), amazingly has a filthy ass on his uniform, like he's already executed a couple of slides before his introduction.[/*:m:1c62qqsk][/list:u:1c62qqsk]
  14. Yeah, I certainly caught that, but there's just so much. The implication that their 2000 World Series followed immediately after two last-place finishes, for instance. Maybe Mr. Phi Beta Kappa should proof his own releases. And he's bragging on going to the top technical school in the country and bagging a humanities degree.
  15. Really, you should mention Bill Wambsganss twice. Who in the Mets front office was kicking back at the Old Timer's Day meeting and said, "You know, we should really give Wambsganss a call"? Bob Murphy is all over this question: [fimg=500]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/screen-shot-2015-02-26-at-10-16-16-pm.png[/fimg] "There's Loren Matthews, the director of special events for the Mets."
  16. The team's pitching staff is deep enough that one might be tempted to say the backup unit alone would look like an average major league staff. One wouldn't be able to harbor for long such illusion with regard to the reserve batsmen, though. A decidedly not-ready-for-primetime-lookin' unit. 17. Let's start with sentence number one. Please join[crossout]s[/crossout] us Thursday, March 5[crossout]th,[/crossout] at 7:00_p[crossout].[/crossout]m[crossout].[/crossout] as author Michael Garry tells [crossout]the[/crossout] stories and signs copies of his new book, [crossout]“[/crossout]Game of My Life — New York Mets: Memorable Stories of Mets Baseball[crossout]”[/crossout] [i set the title here in italics, rather than quotes.] (release date: March 3[crossout]rd[/crossout]). Going with "March 5" or "March 5th" is more of a house style question, I guess. But come on, guys. Hire some help. Editors need jobs too.
  18. Seems like Dilson is really, really on the threshold professionally. If Murphy goes down, Dilson definitely gets a call up. If Wright goes down, Murphy slides over to third, and Dilson probably gets a call up. If Duda goes down, Murphy slides over to first, and Dilson possibly gets a call up. If Campbell goes down, good possibility that Dilson gets a call up. Keep hitting, man. If Flores goes down, it's probably Reynolds they call on. If Tejada breaks a bunion, it's perhaps a moment for Tovar, but... Dilson is gonna see some time.
  19. I assume he'd be at least a little stinky about downgrading his role in his walk year, but if the Mets find themselves in the midst of a pennant chase, everybody will realize that they've got to do what they've got to do. And with a right-handed rookie second-baseman and Terry looking to get sufficient rest for Wright at third, I'm sure even a reserve Murphy will get plenty of starts — as much his productivity will insist upon and perhaps more.
  20. Got good but not great walk rates in the minors, along with modestly good stolen base totals, but he sure profiles as the leadoff hitter the Mets don't have. As such, his launch date may depend on how Lagares does as much as on how Murphy does.
  21. It's a rare episode where Greg gets a VIP visit. Big shot guest stars were usually more concerned with Bobby's or Marcia's maturation/development/emotional health. Still, in this shot, Drysdale seems honestly concerned with Greg's form.
  22. Still, that's one of the last Harvey photos I've seen where he doesn't look fat, abrasive, chaw-filled, and/or haughty. Where he doesn't look like he's got his mook on.
  23. First Colombian Met, correct?
  24. Hey, you want a fully formed big leaguer at 20? Who doesn't?! Some guys are ready to launch at that age and I'm one of them. But should I launch? Hey, Ruben Tejada was ready for the bigs at 20, but has had trouble getting better. You don't want to hit your ceiling, man. I haven't even figured out if I prefer to throw sidearmed or overhand. [fimg=450]http://global.fncstatic.com/static/managed/img/fn-latino/sports/Phillies%20Mets%20Herrera.jpg[/fimg] [fimg=450]http://imgick.nj.com/home/njo-media/width620/img/mets_main/photo/mets-dilson-herrerajpg-98c1f46463995783.jpg[/fimg] But I do know I like to hit. I'm short, strong, and like to hit. [fimg=450]http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Dilson+Herrera+Philadelphia+Phillies+v+New+jmtcDoTYfiil.jpg[/fimg] I don't know how soon I'll be back, but be back I will. 'Til then, I'm all about the crime fighting. [fimg=450]http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2014/0921/ny_split1x_576x324.jpg[/fimg] What kind of 2015 do you see for me? More offense or defense? More minors or majors? More baseball or crime fighting?
  25. Mike Puma isn't so much known for stories he's broken, but the manner in which he broke them. He was the guy who triggered the Mets to rally in solidarity around Bartolo Colon when he made fat cracks. He also famously infuriated Ike Davis for reporting at the start of last year that Davis had acknowledged to him that he hid an oblique injury in 2013. His reporting kinda left Davis out to dry, making it look like he was making an after-the-fact excuse while whining that he didn't want it to sound like he was making an after-the-fact excuse. He could've stuck to the facts a little more and still gotten the story, but he was right, and Davis only looked worse getting pissed at him for how he reported it. Pooms joked in the midst of it that if Davis took a swing at him, he'd probably miss. You got a good story there, Mike, but keep yourself out of it. Your Shecky act ain't playing. __________ Rubin has no shortfall in his share of scoop action, as long as he's been on the beat, but his greatest hit is still the one he put on Tony Bernazard. I don't know if it necessarily hastened the end of the Omar era by a day, but it sure seems to have pushed us along to the where we are today, presenting the Minaya regime as a potent cocktail of unprofessional management and disappointing outcomes in the development field. As the big league contracts of Bay/Perez/Castillo/Beltran/Delgado/Rodriguez/Wagner/Santana/Martinez were all collapsing on top of the organization, it was doubly damning to see how spindly the infrastructure was underneath. Rubin got that story for you. What has been Carig's big moment in his two-year tenure?
