  1. Mysterious Yank (John Wayne) returns to the Irish country village of his birth, spies comely but fiery lass (Maureen O'Hara) tending sheep. Blarney ensues. I guess I need to turn in my IA card, but I sat through this for the first time this week. [fimg=450:3r6qt9o6]http://aboudjaffar.blog.lemonde.fr/files/2012/07/quiet_man_xlg.jpg[/fimg:3r6qt9o6]
  2. Took a while to cycle around to me, but I spent the better part of last year as your Met pitcher designated with the role of closing out wins. That role may cycle away from me yet again. I don't know. My hair, though, is a subject that is less rife with confusion. Listen, I don't know if I'm the answer for you guys or anything, but the last time a pitcher as young as I am saved as many games for the Mets as I did last year was... never. So what do you think you'll get this year?
  3. Checking the record, it was March 27 when he got hurt, taking a come backer off the bat of Ryan Zimmerman. So I'm going to surmise that if he was still around with a week to go before the start of the season, and pitching against A-teamers, they must've been somewhat serious about his candidacy for the 2014 bullpen. He had a knee injury back in 2013, so he may be in danger of getting a label. On the other hand, we've seen Mejia and Matz both return from the limbo of injury cycles so the organization seems patient enough to resist consigning a guy to history. And if he pitches his way back into the picture, they make room in the picture.
  4. Mazzoni, you may recall, got hit in the arm by a comebacker during a spring training appearance last year. His soreness continued through the first part of the year and he didn't end up debuting until June 21.
  5. "I know he's a great fielder but the thing is that I don't really know how good a fielder he is and what the value is for that." There's something a little paradoxical in that, but the thing is, while we all have to put our faith in something, you don't really have to, because every last scout agrees with every last metric which agree with your own eyes. Take the gravely serious and unbiased Fielding Bible lot. Not only did he win their award for outstanding center fielder, but the choice was near-unanimous, with 11 of 12 voters picking him for number one, and the last placing him in second. That guy was probably was just pissed that Laggy missed the last few weeks. But lets even agree with that naysayer and accept that Jackie Bradley was the better fielder by a hand over Juan Lagares. it doesn't take long to realize Lagares was about two and a half times the hitter Bradley was.
  6. Yeah, you don't think about me every day. But on a lot of teams, I'd be a deal. Fighting with the likes Darin Gorski and a couple of rehabbing vets for the fourth and/or fifth slots in the rotation. But right now, I'm feeling kinda buried. The only people who notice me think I'm LJ Mazzilli and they're all "why are you here when you're supposed to be suspended and isn't it your father pissed?" GAH! But at least I'm here. Gorski didn't even get an invite! I'm somebody, damn it. I was a second-round pick. Ranking lists put me between 16th and 23rd among Mets wannabes. I won five games down the stretch for the 51s. Maybe I'll start and maybe I'll relieve. But you WILL know my name. You WILL hear my voice. But what do you think you'll hear from me in 2015? Big things? SAY "BIG THINGS"!
  7. Monoso never got much HoF support, but with a 130 OPS+ and 50.1 WAR over 17 seasons, he remains a highly viable Veterans Committee candidate, as well as a candidate for the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award.
  8. Last suited up for big league action in 1980, when he went 0-2 with the White Sox at age 54. Walked in his only plate appearance for the St. Paul Saints at age 77 in 2003.
  9. I haven't read anything that said he had trouble cracking 90. He may end up there, and he does benefit from deception, but what I've read had him in the low nineties early in the season and up to 95 by the midway point.
  10. How can a Derek Jeter word cloud not include "intangibles"? Or "cinnamon"?
  11. Well, it doesn't make a lot of sense if he's playing well and they're going great guns toward post-season glory.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Better than Throneberry Not as good as Strawberry (wrong forum, chief) Trying to post something quick whilst the good wife was in another room.
  13. JMJ signed with the Mets because he hoped to see more time than the Cardinals were offering him. Good chance he gets some of it, perhaps with Cuddyer bouncing to first against lefties, perhaps with Granderson catching some pine against 'em. [fimg=500:2avpbowl]https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/mayberry-jr.jpg[/fimg:2avpbowl] After Scott Hairston, Mets seem to be down with hiring legacies for their right-handed outfield reserve. How will this one do?
  14. Jimmy Rollins apparently wasn't quite as Mets-averse as all that. "This was my No. 1 landing spot," Rollins said from Los Angeles' spring training camp, "and I considered the Mets to be No. 2. They have some arms over there -- oh my gosh. "I'm not saying I would have gone there. It would have taken a lot. But when I was asked, 'Write down the places you would go if you don't have any (no-trade protection),' I had one team on my list and another where I would go if it didn't work out. Fortunately it worked out here (in Los Angeles). I'm very delighted with that." Doesn't quite say which "lot" it would have taken.
  15. Times Square Bomber had his Mets hat prominently photographed among his meager belongings. One of the London Underground bombers also had something like a knockoff Mets sweat jacket, didn't he?
  16. He was the best thing the team could get without a 2009 first rounder, then he was an alleged Met fan who probably loved Jeter, then he was utterly nothing, then suddenly pitching again, and then, very surprisingly, a high-end prospect, ahead of many uninjured first-rounders, and ahead of Syndergaard to some watchers. [fimg=600:1qw1tq3v]https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/matz.jpg[/fimg:1qw1tq3v] Steven Matz... what the hell is he? And what are we gonna get this season?
  17. I bet Austin Mahone did!
  18. Plawecki was the other. Not to ask for too much, but how doubly sweet that would be?
  19. Mets have been there.
  20. Ernie Banks talking up a storm in what appears to be an old-timer rematch between the 1969 Cubs and 1969 Mets. Anybody remember this? Says it's from 1986. Got a still-young Grote, Kranepool, Garrett, and Harrelson in there, I think. [youtube:3i5waa12]Etu76zCkOTw[/youtube:3i5waa12]
  21. I definitely think they're hoping he comes along and grabs a role this season. I see Randy Myers 1988 but not as much time. 44 innings and 3.96 ERA.
  22. My name is Jack Leathersich. I like two things: striking people out and swallowing meals from Chipoltle. And I do both these things in great proportion. I strike out the side. And then I poop. Holy hell, do I poop. [fimg=550:33f8618c]http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1699544!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_970/harper24s-3-web.jpg[/fimg:33f8618c] I keep my beard trimmed and my bags packed. I'm going to be in New York sooner or later. What do you think happens when I get there?
  23. Yeah. Switching to the tracktastic link. I think Ike has been the gift that keeps giving for Martino. He's always ahead of the crowd for the Daily Davis.
  24. With his speed, just tapping a two-strike pitch to the infield gives him that fighting chance to reach base, as long as the first baseman inexplicably decides to cover an area two feet up the line. [fimg=550:1g9ojjje]http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/3082343/2013-08-18_Yonder_Alonso_can_t_find_first_base.gif[/fimg:1g9ojjje]
  25. Ike Davis still feels ill-served by the Mets. It still burns!
