  1. I assume that last bit is at least partially true. But Baseball-Reference lists 140 players and 82 pitchers as having played their last game in 1994, but significantly greater figures are found in 1993 (178 and 84) and 1995 (187 and 104).
  2. No doubt, but it's as good a night as any to find religion.
  3. With the state of journalism as it is, I'm going to guess the number of signoffs was somewhere between zero and one. And that one may have just been a copyeditor. I wrote Price and asked him to pull it and do a re-write.
  4. TERRY COLLINS! HE ANNOUNCED HIS INTENTION TO GO WITH GRANDERSON IN RIGHT!
  5. Yeah, that was some truly bitter Bitter Bill. Wake up and realize it's the last word on the guy. Don't make the story be about you.
  6. Terrible. Way too young. His ex-big leaguer dad died himself at 57, around the time Jeff was bringing it for the 1994 Mets. I did a goofy profile of McK back when for KCMets: http://www.kcmets.com/MetoftheWeek/JeffMcKnight2.html
  7. I didn't mean to suggest that as a grand claim or anything. But obviously it's either overstated or doesn't matter, considering the Collins announced intention to go with Granderson in right.
  8. No predictions Mony Mony? I predict he's gonna shoot 'em down and turn around. I predict he's gonna shot gun, get it done.
  9. Worth noting is that Terry Collins managed Fernandez in the minors at two different levels.
  10. A team needs a third-string catcher, and that's who I am. Sure, I'm expected to quickly drop to fourth- or fifth-string, depending how quickly Plawecki and Carillo come along, but I woke up this morning and I noted that I'm the only one of we three with major league experience. Nine plate appearances (and one RBI!) worth of major league experience. In my self-serving logic, that makes me number three! Plus I'm a lefty hitter and I inspire music. How long will I hang in there at number three? Until I catch a break and get to be number two, I hope! What do you think my 2015 season holds in store? You know, somebody carries your bag for you when you get to The Show, Meat?
  11. I look forward to the 18-4 games.
  12. I had understood that the idea was to put him in right under any circumstances — in part for that very reason, and in part because he was believed to have a more effective arm than Granderson.
  13. If he pulls off that 2.10 ERA, he'll be likely to get a lot more than 25 saves, unless the Mets really do kick him aside for eight weeks in favor of Bobby Parnell, which I agree seems awful wishful.
  14. He had the twin advantages last year of (1) getting in his appearances where he had enough of a cushion to weather it (so his uglier , and (2) getting hit harder in August as attention was drifting elsewhere anyhow. He'll be on a shorter leash with the fans as 2015 opens.
  15. This is an old story to be suddenly gaining the attention of the big serious media. I've come to think the three-digit numeral is inevitable whether it appears this year or in 100 years, so it's probably not that big a deal. (The Japanese already have them, as many teams assign unique numbers for every player in the entire organization.)
  16. A late (relatively speaking) change. Swapping the left fielder and the right one. [fimg=250]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7b/New_York_Mets.svg/1024px-New_York_Mets.svg.png[/fimg][fimg=250]http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg180/bohob_4_life/WashingtonNationals_PML1_2011-9999.png?t=1290008638[/fimg]Mets=#FF0000]NatsLagares, cfGranderson, =#FF0000]rfWright, 3bDuda, 1bCuddyer, =#FF0000]lfMurphy, 2bdArnaud, cFlores, ssColon, spSpan, cfRendon, 3bWerth, rfHarper, lfZimmerman, 1bDesmond, ssRamos, cEscobar, 2bStrasburg, sp
  17. My problem with Murphy is we've likely seen his ceiling, although Kevin Long is thinking bigger. Murphy, he said. A batting title is not out of his grasp. Hes got a lot of pop and a lot of potential. There is more ability in there and we are going to try to draw it out.
  18. I guess I might've felt different if I saw it when I was younger, but I found this to be just nuts. Two stars, for the little subplot of ecumenicalism.
  19. Some good epic kissing, I'll give them that, interspersed with a LOT of uncomfortable manhandling. Strange that I never realized the ET kiss came from this movie.
  20. A lot of criticism for Sandy, yeah, but little of it would describe Flores as a "light-hitting incumbent." A "bad-fit incumbent," certainly. A "poor-fielding incumbent," frequently. A "heavy-footed incumbent," often enough. i think they kind of fused Flores and Tejada into one unloved conflation named Florida.
  21. Yeah, but (1) old for a boxer is relative in the Rocky universe, (2) maybe it's set a few years back, and (3) maybe Rocky IV was set a few years in the future(!!) they're probably hope you're not counting. Spinoff instead of sequel? Brilliant move? Possibly!
  22. To watch it end-to-end for the first time, it seemed pretty insane. I'm generally a fan of John Ford, but the guy was clearly more than a little nutters. This film certainly fueled perceptions of pastoral Irish romance for generations, but it had no shortage of malarkey, and it kind of takes a mulligan on the big question it pretends to wrestle with.
  23. One factor in my mind is that with a seeming better solution (Herrera) on the horizon, and a seeming far better solution (Nimmo) just across the valley, the Mets don't need to turn him into the leadoff dude of the future. To me, he's either the answer right now or he isn't the answer at all.
  24. That's pretty close to where I landed.
  25. I'm cool with the plan to work Lagares in there, but part of me doesn't want him set up to fail, so maybe I open the season with Granderson and work Lagares into the leadoff slot two days a week (perhaps against lefties) and increase his time there as merited, until he wins the slot outright.
