The Mets and their juniors have pulled the organizational sweep off just once so far this season, on April 16. New York 7, Miami 5 Mets show character, coming from behind twice, with the big blow being a game-tying three-run homer by Wilmer Flores. Jerry Blevins gets his first Mets win. Las Vegas 17, Fresno 4 The Backman Attack was merciless as Vegas pounded out 19 hits, including four from Matt Reynolds. Kevin Plawecki drove in five and Travis Tajeiron homered twice, just in case you missed the first one. Binghamton 5, Erie 2 Bingo gets seven innings of one-run pitching from Matt Koch. Dustin Lawley and Josh Rodriguez support him with homers. St. Lucie 14, Brevard County 6 St. Lucie doesn't look back after a five-run first, with three hits each from Domonic Smith and Colton "Vamos a la" Plaia leading the 18-hit attack. Maikis de la Cruz provided the defensive highlight, throwing a guy out at first from right field. Savannah 8, Charleston 3 The Sand Gnats beat the rival RiverDogs, behind a home run surge from Stefan Sobel, Pedro Perez, and the less alliterative Wuilmer Becerra. Odds of a sweep with five teams in action are 31 to one. Gets a lot sketchier when they get the short-season teams in action. Still nice to celebrate.

IGT #14 4/21 Plawecki Home Opener vs Braves
Edgy MD replied to Ceetar's topic in Archived Game Threads
When was the last time, before the brothers Torres, that a Mets pitcher relieved another Mets pitcher with the same last name? September 28, 2006, Mets at Braves. Roberto relieves Orlando. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2006/B09280ATL2006.htm (September 3, 2006 for a mid-inning replacement. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2006/B09030HOU2006.htm) I found Matt Franco relieving John Franco in a blowout in 1999. My next guess was going to be to look for two Bobby Joneses, circa 2002. -
Ronnie and Keith are right about Curtis. He may have gotten off to a similar start, batting average wise, as last year, but they're very different. Last year he looked clueless at the plate, but this year he's taking his walks and getting good swings, but the hits just haven't been dropping in. 'Til now. With Granderson on his way into the .200s, he'll leave only Murphy, Nieuwenhuis, and Recker on the interstate. The last two have zero hits between them. Maybe overstating it, but lex Torres delivering against Freeman felt huge. Something of a psychic burden is lifted when a guy goes down and the replacement performs well in his first game out. It was true when Campbell came through in his first game and it was true again tonight with Plawecki and Torres. I think in tight game, Flores doesn't go on that eighth-inning sacrifice fly. But he and Tuff were all "might as well keep the pressure on," and he took off. And yes, he looked like he had ankle weights on. And yes, a good throw would have had him. But instead of an out and a runner left in scoring position on his ledger, Laggy gets an RBI. Between that play and the Granderson pop double that fell in front of Gomes, it seems to me that the excellent defensive outfield the Braves have had for the last few years is very much a thing of naught. Teufel take note. I love to see the Mets get deep into the other team's bullpen in Game One of a series. The Atlanta bullpen threw 74 pitches, compared to Met pen throwing 34. Terry letting Moondog swing away in a bunting situation... him and Teufel both has everybody suddenly just loosened up? The booth played, "Let's Try and Remember Guys Who Used to Wear 22 for the Mets" somewhere in the late innings. Incredibly, nobody mentioned Ray Knight.

Great show by that boy wonder, Kevin Plawecki. Getting two hits and two runs scored before I'm able to mark his presence on our roster. I see Duda without a Twitter address and I'm wondering what he would tweet if he did. Pictures of milkshakes? Lists of things he's smashed? Or just cryptic tweets that just include a hashtag: #feelingangry #MyCatFeelsSoft -
The Vorkunov profile had some mealy-mouthed praise from college coachie: He was "impressive" in one of his early appearances behind the dish as a freshman, jumping up and jawing with the umpire over a call at the plate he didn't like, even as the trailing runner advanced unmolested. He was "competitive" in waiting until he was on the verge of academic ineligibility to finally study enough to get his GPA up to the minimum requirement. He showed a "confident" "fire" in regularly defying the team rule to only wear the hat straight. For another player, these anecdotes may add up to a stupid, lazy, cocky hothead. Sometimes indeed most times it would seem that it's good to be white. I shouldn't make too much of the article, but it's notable that these were among the anecdotes the coach chose to share (positive spin aside) upon the verge of his player's ascension to the big leagues.

Your point is well taken. Only meant to note that his low batting average to that point had been somewhat mollified by walks and extra-base hits, but I overstated it.

Flores hasn't shown a walk tool, but Laggy isn't exactly a paragon of strike zone judgement either. Muffy has experience out the chute in that spot, but then they have to flip-flop Cuddyer and Duda. Maybe they stick Lagares in the leadoff spot and drop Granderson to two. -
I thought they would also. I think there are concerns about Monell's defense. They are likely going to put Plawecki as the number one guy, and could neither abide that defense every day, nor Recker's offense (which was perfectly fine last year until he became the number one during the brief interregnum while d'Arnaud was clobbering the ball in Vegas). If Monell is to appear, it'll likely be if Recker gets hurt, or at some point if they want to experiment with three catchers. This could also be understood as them expecting a bit of a long haul sans d'Arnaud.

Both surprisingly optimistic. I can imagine what a healing hand fracture feels like every time you hit a vibrating shot off the handle or the end of the bat. <<SHUDDER>> So I imagine three weeks will be a bit longer before he's contributing at 100%. I'd guess six weeks until he's back in the lineup, and nine before he's himself again.
