  1. Centerfield wrote: Those stills make him look a bit spastic and awkward. I think that's somewhat correct. His game is sort of about unleashing chaos and trying to control it. I think similar is true about Céspedes. Some guys are more like football players out there.
  2. That Dutch team seems to be what a Dominican team might have looked like 25 years ago. All shortstops. Andrelton Simmons is (amazingly) DH-ing. Jurickson Profar is in center. Xander Boegarts is at third. The guy actually playing short is Didi Gregorius. I don't know, but among those guys, he might've been my fourth choice.
  3. I can go get it with the best of them, when healthy. I charge the ball so hard and so well that I stop baserunners like a man with twice my throwing ability. When I'm healthy. I honestly probably have more offense than I've shown. And I aim to show it. When I'm healthy. I'm Juan Lagares, and I'm the Mets fourth or fifth outfielder. The problem is that by the time a job opens up due to injury, I'm hurt too. I'm no goldbricker. I play hurt. But I have to acknowledge I'm not much of an asset when I do. Can I turn the corner this year? That's what I'm asking. 4. I try not to worry too much about spring performances by relievers, particularly spot relievers, as they aren't spotted up in to high leverage situations like they are in the regular season. Also, they're not as nibbly. We'll see.
  5. And a two-run double by Walker puts the Mets up 8-4 anyhow.
  6. Teeb-OW! hit by a pitchie, then doubled off first when L.J. lines out, and he tries to get back but fails to slide back into first. #baseballinstincts
  7. For the record, Granderson ain't Juan Lagares out there in center.
  8. P.J. is one sunburned Irishman out there.
  9. Not getting a call Heisman winners expect to get. Strike three.
  10. T-Bone wearing 97.
  11. Webbie started with WOR in 1969. I can't imagine too many employees with the Mets go back that far. I've seen conflicting reports, some saying he was 65 (like this thread) and others saying he was 70.
  12. Why'd you send him down, Sandy! That's a pretty beefy .219 he's hitting!
  13. One of Jorge Sosa's particularly heroic games came as the 2007 Mets for one night staved off collapse in Washington, September 19, 2007. With the Nats down 5-3, but the Mets bullpen falling apart on a nightly basis, Mike Pelfrey opened the sixth by yielding a walk to Robert Fick and a single to Jesús Flores. Despite the paucity of options, Willie came with the hook, and called on Sosa, who struck out pinch-hitter D'Angelo Jiminez and induced leadoff batter Nook Logan into a double play. He'd get through the next inning unscathed and turn the game over to Heliman and Wagner to finish. But both Willie and Manny Acta agreed in their post-game interviews—that sixth inning was the whole game, and Sosa was the hero. I was a guest with Bubba Sponge, who go home with a game-used ball gifted to him by his hero, Guy Conti, and everything looked fine and safe as houses for the time being, and almost nothing would go right the rest of the season.
  14. The real bone they threw to Tom was signing Mike in the first place. The 2003 Mets were a mess. Utterly lacking a lefthander off the bench, especially after they traded off Burnitz and turned Timo and Jeff Duncan into regulars, they first tried Matt Watson, who gave them nothing, and in the last few weeks were forced to dip down once more, calling on Glavine, who gave them less than nothing, but he only made a handful of plate appearances.
  15. #4 is Logan Verrett.
  16. The Mets needed Mike Glavine, too. I mean, they actually needed somebody better than Glavine, but at the time, they needed a lefthanded stick and he was the best one they had at AAA.

  18. After OPSing at .538 in the AFL—something like a AA level of play—he's likely going to be in Columbia. Likely joining him in that outfield unit there will be Jacob Zanon, Gene Cone, Arnaldo Berrios, and Jay Jabs. They all played in Brooklyn last year, putting up OPS's of .571, .587, .457, and .498 respectively. They wish they could have gone to the AFL and hit like him, so I don't have a lot of tears for the folks he's allegedly stealing at-bats from. If they want playing time, they can try and take it from him with their performance, just like every other of the thousands of players in minor league ball. Yeah, offense is higher in the desert, but the Mets clearly needed outfielders in the middle minors when they signed him. They have an ugly paucity of talent there. Fortunately, he's a couple of years younger than Michael Jordan, so while the time is short to do his catching up, he's got more time than there was for Jordan back then. But I don't think Michael Jordan would have been a particularly hopeless cause had he started out a few years earlier and put more time into it. As bad as a .202 / .289 / .266 // .556 line is, not a lot of folks could just get out of bed and put up those numbers in AA.
  19. I'm Irish and I'm Jewish and that adds up to funny. I tip the scales at about 185, and look like a Met from the Joe Torre era. But I'll play every position for you, and I switch hit, so I'm never going to bail out on you. There's always a place for the Jeff McKnights of this world, and perhaps, with shorter benches, even moreso these days. A double-switch specialist, that's what I am. But the Mets. The Mets removed me from their roster while carrying a whole bunch of Monteros, Flexens, Sean Gilmartin and his spinmistress girlfriend. Not cool. Right now, I'm in the WBC taking my blues out on the Koreans, the Tiawanese, and countless screaming Dutchmen. Excuse the drama, but even clowns get angry sometimes. What does 2017 hold in store for this clown? 20. Stop being SELFISH and move!
  21. Did anybody ask him about how much deliberation went into re-angling the centerfield camera so they could get the woman with the twirling arms out of the frame?
  22. Bruce Chen: hasn't pitched professionally in two years, can't crack 85 with his fastball, took the mound in what looked like dress shoes, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless against the mighty Cubans. Unfortunately, he did it for China. Would've been far better if it brought that grizzle on behalf of his native Panama.
  23. Between multiple and redundant posts about not caring about the WBC, and multiple posts about not caring about Tebow, I'm finding it overwhelming how much folks care about what they don't care about.
  24. He played second yesterday. Played the whole game and went 2-4, sliding over to short mid-game so L.J. Mazzilli could come on and be a HERO.
  25. He didn't really miss any time. Everybody starts about 50% of the time in the AFL. He got a comparable amount of plate appearances as anybody else.
