Wow, Rivera looked like a dead duck and the throw is cut off. Conforto is a pro, man.

Sheesh, don't ask Harvey to squeeze.

Harvey comes to the plate. Keep pouring it on. Chasing the starter early in game one is how you sweep a series.

Wilmer inside outs the softest RBI single ever.

Sheesh guys, you're missing a helluva start. Not sure Reyes touched home plate.

We need to talk about finding another leadoff hitter. I'd like Conforto leadoff better if we had better options in the middle of the lineup. But thank you for the Kaboomowitz, Michael.

Starts off with a K. But Strike Two looked like Ball Four from my seat.

Great to see Harvey ditch the blue top and chrome insignia.

Any idea what kind of reception Harvey is getting?

Hansel's got the funny name and the goofy haircut. I guess he's got my vote. Forgotten man who's only just starting to find himself again down in AAA is Erik Goeddel.

Welcome back, Smokestack. A curious side-effect — possibly even a benefit — of a run of stinkiness is that bullpen roles erode. We have a nominal closer, who could get yanked at any moment, and LOOGy, who may be too effective (relative to the other options) to limit to LOOGy status. So anybody can get thrown into the breach on any night. Anybody can be a hero. If Smoker doesn't see action in the next day or two, perhaps speculation of throwing him a start will bubble up. The story of the Las Vegas 51s in 2017 continues to be Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario. Vegas manager Pedro Lopez seemingly gets to start his day penciling in 5-to-7 total bases between those two guys and maybe a couple of walks. That's pretty sweet. Yeah, it's the Pacific Coast League, where Eric Young, Jr. is currently hitting .354 and slugging .513, but it's always more satisfying to see your youngest players turning the corner. Rosario is currently 14th in the circuit in OPS at .935, just behind veteran teammate Travis Taijeron at .937. Smith sits 30th at .839. Rosario's lofty .360 batting average is only fifth in the league, where the leader is hitting .400. I think we have to go all the way back to Gary Redus to find a minor leaguer who has hit .400 over a full season. If gravity doesn't disqualify you, promotion will. And the theme of promotion hangs over the two young Vegans. I like to think that restraint by the Mets is less about Super Two status (I'm tempted to name them The Super Two when they are called up, but ... pass), but about making sure they won't find their way back. Other interesting news: Josh Smoker has now made two starts, and while going only 4 2/3 and 4 innings, respectively, in the two outings, he's given up a total of one run between them. He's stuck out eight and walked two. Encouraging! Or at least intriguing! Remember that Smoker was signed as a refugee from the Indy leagues, so anything we get (or have gotten) from him is like found money. Brandon Nimmo is finally starting to find his stroke again, going 8 for his last 18 with four walks, three doubles, and a homer. Another hit or two and he's off the Interstate. He and Desmond Jennings are alternating in center, which suggests either could be the next outfielder up. Similarly, Gavin Cecchini has been seeing time at short, perhaps foretelling a callup to come. While Vegas has been porpoising up and down, never quite going on extended winning streaks or losing jags, they've lost six of the last 10, just enough to slide into fourth (and last) in the PCL Pacific Southern Division, at six games out. The medical emergencies in Flushing have certainly weakened them over the first six weeks of the season, but hopefully they'll benefit the 51s in the weeks or two, as Nimmo (initially), d'Arnaud, and Matz have joined the team on rehab stints, with (hopefully) Lugo, Cabrera, and Céspedes (among others?) to follow. I'm curious if a Smoker Start is a possibility.

Welcome back, man.

Why do you hate kittens?

A glum down-and-outer takes a job as a professional caregiver to a young adult crippled by muscular dystrophy. His job made more difficult by the fact that his charge is mouthy, British brat, he nonetheless suggests a road trip to, you know, advance the plot, provide space for the soundtrack, and allow hyjinx to ensue.

Matz joins d'Arnaud in Vegas, one step ahead of Lugo, and two and a half steps in front Céspedes. It's good news! It is! He could be a Met next week! He's about two laps ahead of Syndergaard and Familia, but, you know. You should recruit South Africans.

The funny thing is that after all this time, with a twilight-ish manager, I'd think the succession would be planned out. That the guy would have a few years of AAA skippering and another two years on Terry's staff. I tend to think Wally was Terry's favored successor but the suits didn't see it that way at all, and the persistence of Wally at AAA has delayed Lopez from getting his feet wet.

Jankowski looked like a nice player when we saw him last year. He's done almost nothing since.

I bet he ends up with a 25-year managing career.

I'm enjoying West Side dudes trying their best to bust a chat on baseball mother, fussing with her purse to send them each a hint that they're not getting.

Pictures, descriptions, and accounts are totally lacking! Rebroadcast and retransmission is totally absent!

Teddyway, we got a scoreless inning from Neil Ramirez. So he gets off his shneid. But I think anybody who goes to bed with an infinite ERA even for one night, and has to enter his next appearance with "ERA: INF" on the scoreboard, gets to go home with a Lino Urndaneta Award.
