How about picking up Harvey? Way to Met, Mets.

Rondon wearing the ever-popular Joe Strummer buzzhawk.

Hit hard by Yo, but I'm kind of surprised Reyes didn't go for third.

A small taste of playoff béisbol happening.

I was kind of proud of Harvey. His fastball was for shit but he worked well with his other pitches. Really impressed by Blevvy. I was starting to think there was no way to get a pitch by Rizzo. It's like he's got Phil Esposito's slapshot and Tony Esposito's blocking ability.

Announced two minutes ago on the Las Vegas 51's Twitter feed: Gavin Cecchini is a late scratch from tonight's starting lineup.

Laggy = Your Worst Nightmare

Looks like another earned run on Bryant's record.

Wow! Baez should have gone straight for third.

Bases jammed, and the pinch-hitter is ... Matz. What a mess.

I suppose Schwarber could have hit that harder and longer. In theory.

Walking under his own power, anyhow.

And down goes Walker. I get the idea we will see Rosario sooner than planned.

Harvey's change suddenly has some sort of backup, screwball-type movement.

Thanks for the run, Kris Bryant. #PartofthePlan

Getting Rizzed on the first pitch. #NotPartofthePlan

Call me crazy, but I just love how they keep recalling Montero as fanz tear their hair out. The persistence of the idea that he's just one adjustment away from effectiveness despite all evidence to the contrary is just so ... romantic. In short, please don't believe the next thing is always the better thing, just because it has the apparent virtue of unfamiliarity. That said, I think it's a safe bet that Nimmo is better than he might look when you peek only at his current batting average. His OPS sits at a far-more-respectable .730. Secondly, that average is .283 over the last 60 at-bats. And yeah, I'd've called up Rosario when I DL'd Cabrera: Firstly, the team had won three straight, so he doesn't come up with the pressure of turning the narrative around. Secondly, they probably want somebody more like a starting shortstop than they apparently consider Rivera to be, considering Reyes hasn't been hitting. Thirdly, he can take the lefties and Reyes the righties, taking the pressure off him further. Lastly, with a presumed 10-Day DL trip happening for Cabrera, it pre-places an end-date on his promotion, so there's no pressure on him to prove himself utterly and finally. If he's not performing like a wunderkind off the bat, well, he was just an injury replacement. His real launch date comes later. The Mets' and their prospect would have gotten coverage from several different angles. So I don't believe in dealing out and calling on the next big name when faced with adversity, but I'm ready to call those names. I don't, however, have any idea what condition Conforto's condition is in.

It wasn't all Lenny. Like this year, it wasn't that big homer hitters hit more, but everybody and his sister hit more. Raffy Santana went from his annual 1 to 5. Terry Pendleton was averaging around three a year and jumped to 12. Wade Boggs seemingly re-invented himself, going from an average of 7 to 24, and then only once more hit as many as 11 again over his long career. Lenny Dykstra, whose timeline I think we all remember a little differently, went from 8 to 10. I think 1987 was about rabbit fur in the ball.

Well, as I note above, it's pretty clearly more than a few people getting over. As for why MLB wouldn't say so, they really don't ever say so, going back to the Power Spike of 1987. They like to be seen as pure and impartial curators of a naturally evolving game. But there's a new commish who has suggested he'd like to get his hands dirty with taking a look at nature-of-the-game changes, and then jumped back when defenders stepped in.

Montero in the house and expectorated to be activated for tonight's game. Mets allegedly torn between sending The Smoke back to Vegas or DFA'ing Neil Ramirez.

Is it me, or has the ball been juiced like nobody's business? Just a year or two ago, it seemed like we were in the waxing of a pitching-dominant era, and now, 60+ games in, balls are continuing to fly out at a record pace. And it's kind of a silent killer, too, because rather than the top homerun hitters pursuing ever-loftier, eye-popping totals, were just in a situation where everyone is hitting 'em. Or more of 'em. And backend relievers—your Neil Ramirezes, your Josh Edgins, and your Tyler Pills—are just getting massacred. It's not just us. It's everywhere. Yeah, a lot of it's us, but still.
