Well, I assume they announced this a day in advance for a reason, and they have an idea of which corresponding move is going down. But they ain't gonna tell a guy to play his heart out but tomorrow he's toast. Smith isn't on the 40, but blood won't necessarily have to spill. I think there's room (hey, Bruce's spot!) but things are real convoluted right now.

The Mets are reporting that Dominic Smith will be promoted and will join the team tomorrow. So Sandy DOES give a rat's ass! At least a little rat! With a little ass! The reigning PCL player of the month went 2-4 last night with an RBI. Don't know if he'll be in tonight's lineup, but he'd better come up with a goopy name fast. SMITTY. DOMINATION. DO-SMIT. I think he and Rosario should go with THING 1 and THING 2.

I kinda wanted to see Lagares.

Well, while many may have hoped the open roster spot would be used to help piece together next year's infield, but we do, alternatively, get a peak at what looks to be next year's outfield. Four fifths of them anyhow, with the potential fifth guy (Travis Tajeiron? Jayce Boyd? Nori Aoki) being a mystery at the current time. Welcome back, Laggy! Please see the equipment manager and pick out a dumb name for the weekend. RealityChuck wrote: OTOH, the Mets were stupid not to take on some of Bruce's salary and get someone with even more. It depends. Money has a value in terms of competitiveness too, if and when it's re-invested. They ate a big chunk of salary when they traded Beltran for Wheeler, for instance, and that's back when the team was operating in something like receivership, so it's not as if they won't or can't do that if the right deal (or what they see as the right deal) is available.

Speaking of "terribly forced," please allow me to say that "All Rise" is a TERRIBLE nickname. Nobody says "Hey, All Rise, throw me the ball!" or "Nobody got anywhere with that girl, but she hasn't met All Rise!" "All Rise" is a tagline, not a nickname. Calling him "All Rise" is like calling Pete Rose "By Any Other Name" or calling Dave Kingman "It's Good to Be." "Hizzoner" is a nickname for a guy named Judge. "Wapner" is a nickname for a guy named Judge. "All Rise" is goofy. If it wasn't for the contrived nature of the Players Weekend enterprise and the contrived nature of John Sterling's home run calls, I'd say it was so bad that it's almost good. But it screams of amateurs doing a job meant for professionals, children doing a job meant for adults, AND adults doing a job meant for children. It is, in a sense, a perfect nickname for a our times.

Mets are eight games ahead of Philadelphia, but floundering and falling fast, so let's not give them any hope here.

Yeah, they clarify that in the callout box, because somehow they couldn't work it into the title or subtitle. And then they put a nickname quiz on pages two and three, because it's not like we're saber rattling with a nuclear-armed rogue state or anything.

It makes me think that Michael Conforto dreams of being a comically inept broadcaster, or that he likes to wipe his butt on the ground. Hey, see if you can pick me up one of the BRUUUCE shirts for under $3.

Becoming the second lefty-hitting firstbasman to jumping from the Mets to the American League this week, Jay Bruce seemingly opens up the job for Dominic Smith. But if Wilmer Flores gets the job in the interim, he'd better watch out. Jay seemed as alien as anybody when he arrived last year after spending his whole career in Cincinnati. This year, he couldn't have looked more comfortable, despite his presence being somewhat embarrassing considering the Mets spent much of the offseason trying to deal him. My main memory is from last week, after Rosario's first game, with Amed walking out of the dugout with Bruce's arm around him trying to comfort him. Reminds me just now of John Buck throwing an arm around a stunned Matt Harvey in the Mets dugout, trying to comfort his young teammate shortly after he learned of his torn elbow ligament and impending Tommy John surgery. Like Buck, he offered his comfort to a player even as he had a good idea that he was the one whose tenure was doomed. Now he goes back to Ohio, but his city is gone! If this is the best we can get, then what is the point? Is the goal here to just dump some salary and open a roster spot? Well, those aren't altogether meaningless goals.

In fact, they look goopy.

We could've used Wes out there today. Wes the manager and Wes the player.

I think one of the better arguments for Moose is that with Granderson, Bruce, Duda, Walker, and Cabrera all (likely) gone, the Mets will be significantly less lefthanded, but man, I don't want any more thou-shalt-not-walk batters.

Six more outs to show some dignity.

VERIZON trivia question: five players to hit 100 or more homers with 3 different franchises. I got Beltre, Reggie Jackson ... Carlos Beltran?

Notice how humbled-by-duress Harvey has gone with HARV over DARK KNIGHT, but Syndergaard, who baseball isn't done humbling, goes with THOR.

GOOPY is Erik Goeddel. But if you ask me, Matz is totally goopy. Like, the goopiest.

I'd like to thank Nicholas for hacking like a backup catcher. Robles takes the mound and walks in a run, just as he's walked in runs all season, and Nicholas goes up there and strikes out without ever seeing a pitch in the zone. Even dumber than Reyes taking a fastball for strike three on 3-2 pitch with his team down by three. What gives these days, man?

Well, I'm all for pushing that top fence back two feet or pushing the wall forward two feet, so players can reach over to make a play without it bouncing back into their face. If the wall configuration doesn't change, then the answer is to make that facing that the M&M sign is printed on out of tin, so it resounds in a way that a ball off the wall does not. Use your ears, Jerky!

[fimg=650:1dqo5a57]http://m.mlb.com/assets/images/4/4/4/247292444/cuts/1280x720/cut.jpg[/fimg:1dqo5a57] Interesting that Reyes' nickname is the Spanish for "Molasses." It may connote sweetness where he comes from, but in 'Murica, it connotes excruciating slowness. No idea what "CATIRE" is meant to mean.

If we didn't build the side walls right up against the foul line in the outfield, players wouldn't have to go into a slide while pursuing fair balls by the line.

Isn't that kind of looking like fool's gold to you?

Yay, short benches and pinch-hitting pitchers!
