  1. But they shut the door. Wow.
  2. Oh, mercy, Scooter Gennett.
  3. Come on! Should have pulled him after one baserunner.
  4. What a job. I don't anticipate that they'll send him out for the ninth, but I hope he starts the inning.
  5. What a dog-days series with SNY relegating it to Randazzo & Darling.
  6. Yeah, dat wuz dum. Upside: this is a good-hitting team that Montero is shutting down. Downside: this is a bad-pitching team keeping the Reds in the game anyhow.
  7. He did, with shifty work from Cabrera!

I don't feel like looking it up, but I think there was a marathon extra inning game where at least one and probably both pitchers went the distance. This was even before the Babe Ruth era and may have involved Iron Man Joe McGinnity. The Brooklyn Robins visited the Boston Braves and on May 1, 1920 with both pitchers (Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger) amazingly going the distance in a 26-inning marathon (add .2 innings more and it's almost literally a marathon). But this wouldn't disqualify Lunchie's answer as neither Cadore nor Oescheger took the loss, with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. Never heard much about Cadore or Oescheger? I imagine that's because both of their arms fell of the next day.
  9. The DSL Mets 1 are being broken up. Having completed an outstanding season that most other teams would envy (44-20, .620), the season has come to end as they finish four games out of the money in the Dominican Summer League South Division. Some of the players are being sent stateside to finish the season in the Gulf Coast or Appalachian Leagues, while others are being shipped to the other side of the bunkhouse to help the even better DSL Mets 2 (50-21, .704) in the playoffs as the champs of the Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division, which start tomorrow. Even by DSL standards, the Mets 1 were no great shakes offensively, managing just 14 homers in 70 games in the power-sapped league. That's hardly the bottom of the barrel though—the A's have just one DSL team and they produced only five homers in 72 games). This isn't as bad as it looks, though. The Mets 1 were 11th of (a whopping) 40 teams in OPS, led by 17-year-old third baseman José Peroza (.786) and fellow millennium baby, outfielder Moisés Gonzalez (.772). Venezuelan Catcher Wilfred Astudillo has gone .291 / .351 / .368 // .719 and has caught 39.5% of base-stealers. The real hotsy-totsy stuff has gone on the pitching side. Yeah, keep in mind that it's a pitcher's league, but there's still some cats to get you swinging: Nelson Leon (22): 8-3 / 2.06 in 70.0 IP with 11 walks and 52 strikeouts and a 1.01 WHIP Miguel Ramirez (20): 6-2 / 1.76 in 66.2 IP with 3 (!) walks and 53 strikeouts and a 0.90 WHIP Jorge Cespedes (21): 6-2 / 2.03 in 62.0 IP with 14 walks and 49 strikeouts and a 1.19 WHIP Malky Mena (20): 3-3 / 2.13 in 55.0 IP with 7 walks and 50 strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP Sure, kids, right? But choose your poison. Closing duties were split by: Ramon Guzmán (20): 1-1 / 1.25 with 4 saves in 43.1 IP with 11 walks and 34 strikeouts and a 1.02 WHIP Hector Rodriguez (19): 3-0 / 1.86 with 4 saves in 38.2 IP with 21 walks and 55 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP If you like to see control, you've got it up and down that group with the exception of Rodriguez, and he's got a Leathersich strikeout rate. That's a sweet foreshadowing of what Mets of the future might look like if you live long enough. And remember, that's the weaker of the two DSL teams, with the DSL 2 team the subject of tomorrow's update.
  10. A family of Sudanese "lost boys" (actually including a girl) are forced into exile after their village is attacked during the country's civil war. Left without adult supervision, one of the boys assumes the role of chief, and the struggle forward becomes as much about staying together as it is about staying alive. 12. There's room on the 40 and nobody has to be released. The real issue (to the extent that there is one) is that then you'd probably have to remove the guy you added (Jayce Boyd or Victor Cruzado?) and expose him over the winter, and possibly end up losing him even more pointlessly than they lost Adam Wilk. In that regard, the real alternatives to using Aoki as a fill-in are Travis Snider (injured at the present time) and Cody Decker, who stand as good a chance as any of being the Matt Watson and Mike Glavine of 2017.
  13. These are reportedly the handwritten notes of Casey Stengel's Hall of Fame induction speech. The estimate is between $1,200 and $1,800, which would certainly be a bargain basement find considering what an Aaron Judge jersey will cost ya. Sale 2455 Lot 253

  15. Sweet rally. Tying run on sextuple deck!
  16. Nice hit, Nimmo. You shouldn't have been swinging, but ...
  17. Way to pretend to care, Suarez. SEND SUAREZ TO JUAREZ!
  18. Well, the Reds have used a catcher-turned-pitcher in this game. Why not the Mets? Don't we have 20 pitchers on the roster?
  19. Reds playing Beastie Boys? That's Mets music, man.
  20. Florrie was afraid Hammie's speed. And that triggers a massive rally. Just you be you, Flores. I mean, you know what I mean.
