  1. There is talk of Edgardo Alfonzo. Plenty of talk. I imagine if you polled Mets fans, he'd be at or very near the top of the list. Working against him is that conservative big league clubs prefer experienced dudes, and Edgardo's only experience is a single season managing a short season club with a long history of success to a Stengelian .316 winning percentage.
  2. Sandy Alderson. That's who you still are. And you're starting to think you're getting the runaround from your staff. Each of them has been asked to give you a list of 17 managers. And they tend to leave you uninspired. Some of the guys are young and have had passing tenures. Some are old and have simply seen too many summers. Their brains are baked. Some are old and had passing tenures 30 years ago. You know who you should call. He's never steered you wrong. He, of course, it's Mets minor league field coordinator Kevin Morgan. Terry Collins' successor in that role, in fact. When Kevin coordinates a field, it stays coordinated. "Kev, you say, I need a list. Seventeen men. All of whom have managed in the bigs, and are now available." "That's easy," he says, "Ron Washington, Brad Ausmus, Mike Qua ... " "Stop right there, Kev," you say. "Those guys were on Terry's list, or J.P.'s, or Ricco's." "There have been other lists?" he asks. "There have," you answer. "And Fman doesn't like them. Wants to send them over a cliff or something." "Fucking Fman," he answers. "Did he say something about a bag of dicks? Send me those lists and I'll get you some new names." Kevin Morgan, What a guy. Drafted by the Mets in 1991 and has been working for them in some capacity ever since. You wait by the fax machine. Because it's October and there's nothing better to do for a baseball GM than stare at a fax machine waiting for a list of old managers. Eventually the shrieking and whirring and clicking starts, and out pops the following, with two former Met managers, one former Mets coach, a couple of longtime rivals, and a handful of guys with tangential recognizability among your fickle fan base and your fickler ownership group. A lot of years and a lot of wins in this group. You squint at it, trying to see something that's maybe not obvious, and maybe wince a little as you wonder what Fman's reaction might be. Which four of these guys do you bring in? 3. If we hired Washington, anytime I tried to teach a new skill to any player, I'd be tempted to turn to him and say, "It's not that hard. Tell him, Wash."

  7. Yeah, it just shook out that way, but howzabaout that? I sorted them into groups based on their last year managing. So each group should have some recent guys near the front of the list, but that may mean guys pretty much as old as the guys that haven't seen a dugout in decades. Group D will have a couple of guys who haven't yet seen a social security check.
  8. Remember when you were Sandy Alderson? Well, dammit, you're still Sandy F. Alderson. And you're frankly a little underwhelmed at the ex-manager managerial candidates presented to you by your assistant GM and your special assistant to the GM. And then it occurs to you ... you have another special assistant to the GM — he's been on the job a couple of days now — and so you give him a call. "TERRY!" you say, "I'm looking for an experienced manager. No, another experienced manager. This may be a total dick move, but I figure you know a lot of guys. On the one hand, you were a manager just last week. On the other hand — CALM DOWN, Terry — you've been around the race track a few times." You let Terry vent for a bit about fundamentals and eggs in your beer and guys who run tight ships, and it's frankly still less annoying than listening to Willie Randolph talk about winning. At the end, you're all, "So, you'll have that list of 17 guys on my desk by nine, right?" And damned if he doesn't have it there by seven. Because Terry is a lot of things. But above all, he's a pretty standup guy. Which four of these 17 managers would you call in for the interview? Or at least the pre-interview interview? 9. The New Yorker invites you to consider the error. The premise is a little over-stated. There are parallels to the error in other sports — "unforced errors" in tennis comes to mind first — but still a good deep dive.
  10. I went for Johnson (natch), Cubbage (my loyalty knows no bounds), Garner (who doesn't need a guy named "Scrap Iron" keeping a group of young men on the same page?), and Lopes (bunting school!). But I may toss Scraps aside for Moose. OE: Hmmm ... I guess Torborg suggests my loyalty does have it's limits.
  11. That's great. Mets aside, they go from YSIII to MSG to the 42nd Street subway station, and it sort of leaves out the two Eastern boroughs.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm kinda serious about this. Yeah, I don't mean to undermine your point. The idea that eight years into your tenure, you're wondering about where you've gone wrong in the development department is a bad rub. That should be the one part of the organization that's been reduced to a science.
  13. Special thanks to whoever voted for bringing in Moose Stubing and giving him a half a chance to get off the schneid.
  14. Still living and looks more or less healthy and spry in recent years. You want to talk to a guy who'll make you scratch your head, talk to Maury. The Wikipedia wrote: After retiring, Wills spent time as a baseball analyst at NBC from 1973 through 1977. He also managed in the Mexican Pacific League—a winter league—for four seasons, during which time he led the Naranjeros de Hermosillo to the 1970–71 season league championship. Wills let it be known he felt qualified to pilot a big-league club. In his book, How To Steal A Pennant, Wills claimed he could take any last-place club and make them champions within four years. The San Francisco Giants allegedly offered him a one-year deal, but Wills turned them down. Finally, in 1980, the Seattle Mariners fired Darrell Johnson and gave Wills the reins. Wills' tenure was an unmitigated disaster. Baseball writer Rob Neyer, in his Big Book of Baseball Blunders criticized Wills for "the variety and frequency of [his] mistakes" as manager, calling them "unparalleled." In a short interview appearing in the June 5, 2006 issue of Newsweek, Neyer said, "It wasn't just that Wills couldn't do the in-game stuff. Wills's inability to communicate with his players really sets him apart. He said he was going to make his second baseman, Julio Cruz, his permanent shortstop. Twenty-four hours later he was back at second base. As far as a guy who put in some real time (as a manager), I don't think there's been anyone close to Wills." According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Steve Rudman, Wills made a number of gaffes. He called for a relief pitcher although there was nobody warming up in the bullpen, held up another game for 10 minutes while looking for a pinch-hitter and even left a spring-training game in the sixth inning to fly to California. The most celebrated incident of Wills' tenure as manager occurred on April 25, 1981. He ordered the Mariners' grounds crew to make the batter's boxes one foot longer than regulation. The extra foot was in the direction of the mound. However, Oakland Athletics manager Billy Martin noticed something was amiss and asked plate umpire Bill Kunkel to investigate. Under questioning from Kunkel, the Mariners' head groundskeeper admitted Wills had ordered the change. Wills claimed he was trying to help his players stay in the box. However, Martin suspected that given the large number of breaking-ball pitchers on the A's staff, Wills wanted to give his players an advantage. The American League suspended Wills for two games and fined him $500. American League umpiring supervisor Dick Butler likened Wills' actions to setting the bases 88 feet apart instead of 90 feet. After leading Seattle to a 20-38 mark to end the 1980 season, new owner George Argyros fired Wills on May 6, 1981 with the M's deep in last place at 6-18. This gave him a career record of 26-56 for a winning percentage of .317, one of the worst ever for a non-interim manager. Years later, Wills admitted he probably should have gotten some seasoning as a minor-league manager prior to being hired in Seattle. However, the aforementioned Julio Cruz, himself an accomplished base stealer, credited Wills for teaching him how to steal second base against a left-handed pitcher.

  17. You're still Sandy Alderson. Less than fully edified by the list of candidates provide by John Ricco, you place a call to Special Assistant to the General Manager J.P. Ricciardi. "Jape," you say,"I need a manager, an experienced manager, and my list so far is missing a certain sparkle. I doesn't light up the room, Jape! Get me, I dunno, 17 names. Seventeen. Can you do that for me, Jape?" Not 10 minutes later, the fax machine starts buzzing, because you're Sandy, and you do things your own way and still see some value in faxes. And what do you know, but that efficiency expert Ricciardi has sent you the names of these 17 guys. Which four do you call in for an interview? 18. “George Weiss, the General Manager, brought me on board to the Mets in 1962. Casey Stengel was one of the smartest managers in baseball and Weiss was an excellent GM, so I knew I couldn't lose.” — Solly Hemus
  19. I figured folks would shrug and vote for the four youngest, but here we are and two guys gave votes for calling Dave Bristol in for interview. Fair play to you.
  20. HahnSolo wrote: Is this the "Managers who are still alive 2017" thread? Part I, yes.
  21. You're Sandy Alderson, and the Wilpons tell you to find a new manager. "Done!" you say. "Edgardo Alfonso!" "We're not done, Sandy," they say, in unison, which is creepy. "We need a guy with experience — big league experience." "We insist on it," adds Sol Katz, who up until that moment, you hadn't realized was in the room, but now you can't stop thinking about how he's dominating the room. "Solly Hemus," you say. "That's not gonna work out either," says Katz, with a terrifying look in his eye. "But I'm sure you'll find somebody." So you head back to your office and huddle with your lieutenants. "Get me the name of every living experienced manager!" you cry. And here you are. Here's the first group (handed to you by Senior Vice President, Baseball Operations & Assistant General Manager John Ricco!) Pick four of these guys that you are going to call in for an interview. (Yes, I realize Terry is on the list, and that's absurd, but as the last guy who has lost his job, he's the most recent available experienced manager in existence.) 22. Word, thanks.
  23. I was gonna fix it, but I figured FaFiF had his reasons.
  24. I had Solly on my shortlist of interviews for the Mets manager, too. He last managed in the bigs in 1961. Fifty-six years waiting for a second chance!
  25. I know, right? This is purely filling in the next in link but it would certainly be interesting if they hired Iwanow. She's been in the organization for a dozen years, working her way all the way up from Kingsport, in a profession where upward mobility is hard. She has a lot of NYS roots — bachelor's and master's from Ithaca, interned with Cornell, staff trainer at SUNY Binghamton. And she'd be an adventure for Keith. She's already had a September callup (or maybe two) and even got an embarrassing costume for rookie hazing day. Go, Deb Iwanow.
