It may be for one day, but it feels like a little old-school fun to be carrying three catchers. It's probably best that it's for one day. This could be the big break David Wright has been waiting for.

For a guy who was supposed to be the man about town, he never seemed as comfortable in his skin as he tried to project. For a guy chasing models, he may have been athletic and semi-rich, but his worried eyes and tobacco lips always seemed to suggest he was miscasting himself as an urbane playboy. The list of douchey moments is too long to recount. I choose to remember him gushing online about a day spent as the guest of also-fake-playboy Donald Trump at the links. If there's anything sadder than a jock-sniffer, it's a jock who celebrates being sniffed. And sad is mostly what I think of, while the term "douche" is easy to throw around, I think he had the problem of wanting to be seen as special and interesting (like Derek Jeter) more than he wanted to actually be special and interesting. Jeter was of course, just as phony, but Matt lacked the Yankee shortstop's ability to read the room. I had a friend named Andrew. A bookish musical theater afficionado. While Andrew didn't excel athletically, basketball, in particular, was not his game. But he found himself in a gym one day in his 13th year playing with a bunch of us. He probably wan't particularly worse than me, but as the good players ribbed the others on their play, Andrew came up with a strange moral calculus. He noticed the guys getting the most shit were the ones who threw up airballs. We were all missing prodigiously, but it was the airball chuckers getting the grief. So he resigned to always hit the rim. Laser beam after laser beam started flying out of his hands. Ferocious no-arc bricks with no chance to sink, but making a resounding clank off the hoop. As the better players started falling down in laughter, Andrew didn't get it. He was hitting the rim! Didn't that make him no worse than anybody else? Wasn't that enough for everybody? While others saw his violent shots as sincere and pathetic failures, I knew him best, and saw these shots for the misguided attempt at credibility that they were. He just didn't get it, and I felt real bad for him. It was tough to watch. Matt Harvey was never the worst guy on the floor. Maybe not even now. But when it came to PR, when it came to his public profile, when it came to his career as a pitch man, when it came to just being a genuine person, a decent teammate, an engaged citizen of the blue and orange, Harvey was continually just hitting the rim, and wondering why it wasn't enough for everybody. It's been tough to watch.

While the juggling of P.J. Conlon and Corey Oswalt between the majors and minors has upended a period of seeming stability for the 51s, forcing reliever Drew Smith into the rotation, it's not like they were playing so good they didn't need some shaking up. Hanging on for a 10-8 victory over Salt Lake last night, they averted a four-game sweep and ended a four-game losing streak, bringing their record, such as it is, up to 2-5 on the week, dropping them deeper in last, 8.0 games off the pace in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division (I think they could have gotten "Pacific" in there one more time, to represent this division of four land-locked teams), and 3.0 games out of third. But it's Las Vegas, so there's always somebody hitting. Unfortunately, Bryce Brentz, one of their hottest hitters, has hit the DL after fouling a ball off his foot. That makes two Vegas outfielders on the DL (along with Kevin Kaczmarski) and they still haven't activated Wuilmer Becerra, whose career seems to be at the reckoning point. One place they are also getting a tasty amount of O from is the middle infield. Luis Guillorme continues to pile up hits and walks, and went to bed last night with a .300 / .394 / .433 // .828 line. If he's done something about that spare tire he brought to spring training, he's a good bet to get a look this summer. Playing along side him is our old friend, 2012 first-rounder Gavin Cecchini, outhitting his double-play partner with a .317 / .361 / .505 // .866 showing. Chris Flexen continues to anchor the rotation, and by "anchor," I mean that he alone has been successful, with a 3.82 ERA through his first five starts and 30 2/3 innings. I imagine if the timing was right, he would have gotten Conlon's call last night. Flexie has whiffed 25 and walked eight and is not here for your PCL offensive outburst bullshit. But the guy you're REALLY bound to see soon is Buddy Baumann. Claimed on waivers from San Diego shortly before the Mets and Pads clashed, Buddy looks to join the long tradition of BB-initialed Mets, having put up a Liliputian 0.79 ERA through his first 12 appearances. That's one run in 11 1/3 innings. If you don't think that SCREAMS "SECOND LEFTY!" I submit to you the .077 batting average figure lefties have put up against him. Most of this bad-ass pitching has been on behalf of the Padres Albuquerque affiliate, so the big squad may not be in a rush to see him, but I bet he's only a few weeks away from being a Met. The next bullpen meltdown (Heaven forbid) could accelerate that. The Harvey talk has been elevated to a "saga" on the San Francisco Giants beat. Meanwhile the Padres have joined the cadre of teams rumored to be potential trading partners, according to Mike Puma, who also lands the unsurprising scoop that the Mets would like catching help. The Padres are sort of the anti-Reds, in that they seemingly run from pillar to post philosophically, never sticking with one approach long enough to fully let it play out. The Reds, on the other hand, seem to stick with the same game plan year after year, only to make zero progress, year after year. Both are teams I want to like more than I do. I imagine San Diego's ballpark and location has about a million times more appeal for Harvey.

He's got a little of the Da's Belfast accent in there. Looked good for three innings at a time, anyways. And deGrom got his rest.

P.J. hung up on his manager twice before getting the news of his promotion. [tweet:10tungso] [/tweet:10tungso]

I like the idea of riding Stop Making Sense HARD in this series.

Ken Rosenthal indicates that the Mets are confident they can make a deal, reporting "four to five teams interested" in the guy. Andy Martino reports "strong interest" including from San Francisco and Cincinnati. Mark Feinsand says interest is more tepid. Mike Puma says the White Sox are in but there is doubt about the Orioles. The Rangers, Rays, Tigers, Red Sox, and Yankees are said to be uninterested. I guess that means the Swihart dreams are dead. Rosenthal additionally expects the Mets to gobble salary in the hopes of getting somebody with a chance to be useful.

I like the idea, even if the effect is lost here (can we get an animated gif?), but 65% of the cover is wasted on wallpaper.

The BEST Mullin cover. The yellow background beats the white ones. No trouble integrating photos and illustrations together. And Mullin successfully gives the kid oversized headgear to imply he's an adorable moppet wearing clothes too big for him. Other times, Mullin tries to do this, but instead gives him an oversized hat or helmet that fits, suggesting that the kid has an enormous mutant head. This is my gold standard right here. I am that kid and he is me. All the way with 67!

The broken step is money. The broken step is the coup de grace. Can you imagine a team today trying to drum up excitement by suggesting (a) we're definitely aiming to get better than last year's .410 winning percentage, and ( we openly acknowledge our failure two years ago to improve on the far more anemic .329, but hey, hope springs eternal?

Word.

The funny thing is that, if they left Céspedes in, he might have run through that stop sign.

Well, there goes that insurance plan.

Surprising stop sign from Sherlock. [fimg=400:2qftmqfu]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/fa/74/e1/fa74e12c2591be54ac1b9857c4c7d103.jpg[/fimg:2qftmqfu]

Good for you, Cés. Let's pinch-run. Wait, Reyes? This should be Lagares.

Gonzo wants a third.

I checked the Manager-of-the-Year thing and ... we're all wrong. I don't recall this guy managing the Reds. Get Sewald out of there. His pitches have no action.

Only Reds manager to win Manager of the Year. I'll guess Davy Johnson.

He was getting hit. Homer Bailey, man. He's good for what ails ye'. Just a reminder of his contract: 2014: $9 million 2015: $10 million 2016: $18 million 2017: $19 million 2018: $21 million 2019: $23 million 2020: $25 million mutual option ($5M buyout)

Conlon has an auntie waving a picture of St. Padre Pio.

Maybe pull Céspedes early tonight.
