Terrific job by Nimmo, staying alive until Barraclough beat himself.

I don't know if this is going to work, but I'm impressed by the alacrity with which it got done. Yeah, the margin for error is unfortunately non-existent. Offense, man.

And why did Rosario not make the effort Cabrera made to at least try and knock it down?

What a trickly rally this is.

Centerfield wrote: He's here! Was he waiting in his car? Seriously right? His agent: "Jose, I'm never going to tell you what to do, but I feel like if you're already standing outside their clubhouse with your spikes on, that takes away some of the leverage I have here." Impressive that he reported in time to be in the lineup. I feel like it improved his leverage. The Mets didn't need him tomorrow. They need him tonight! 'Cuz they're not sleeping!

Not sure at all, but that's why they have scouts. They can makes the educated guesses. I have no idea if they are going to make this move or if it's the right one, but I imagine if they do, it'll be cheap enough that it'll really be a sort of an extra lottery ticket.

I figured that welt in the arm might get Rocco a day off.

It's sort of that we're not in an era of more crappy teams, but rather that the crappy teams are crappier. Though I tend to think the Reds may be trying to actually compete year in and year out and just desperately unable to assemble a pitching staff.

Switch hitters are seemingly a dying breed. Switch hitters who can get it done from both sides are even rarer. I think the advantage of never having to bail helps a guy from getting too deep in a slump. (That theory isn't helping Reyes much, however.) Keith did an analysis of the differences between righthanded and lefthanded Cabrera last night. He tripped over his words, but it was basically that righthanded Cabrera was a high-ball line-drive hitter, and lefthanded Cabrera was a low ball power hitter, but his tomahawk drives can leave the park too. Mookie was also a guy who liked it up righhanded but hit it off his shoetops lefthanded.

We're in a very tanky era.

Tipping my hat to the ever-impressive Asdrubal Cabrera and the malice with which he is treating major league baseballs this year. While he has been spared last season's positional float around the diamond, he has batted first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. He's been the most valuable Met who isn't a pitcher, and nobody comes particularly close to him. He's pinch-hit twice, turning a game around with a homer this weekend. And speaking of homers, he's one off the team lead. Second-year Brave secondbaseman Ozzie Albies is the only keystoner in the National League approaching his orbit offensively, and defensively, he's pretty much captain of the infield, with only one error thus far. Plus, he does that thing with the helmets. It's early, but I'm nominating him for an All-Star spot, which would be only his third, and first since 2012. He's the Salt-and-Pepper King thus far. Well, if he was available tonight, he might be starting in leftfield in place of one of our three lefthanded outfielders, instead of Phil Evans. But hopefully, by the time he'd be ready to step in as the righthanded-batting outfielder the team is lacking, Céspedes would be back anyhow.

Well, I imagine if he was out by 10 feet, you don't want to look small. Mattingly has to work with that ump crew and video review crew tomorrow, and presumably through the year. But your point is otherwise taken.

Your final from last night: Las Vegas 9, Sacramento 1. The 51s scored in each of the first six innings, as newcomers carried the day. Recent signee Cody Martin went the first four innings in his debut, shutting the River Cats out on 1 hit and 3 walks, while striking out 4. Recent promotee Andrew Church pitched the final five innings, scattering 5 hits and 0 walks while yielding but a single run, striking out 3. The Vegans enjoyed homers by recent contractees Christian Colón and Cody Asche. Tip of the hat to the organization for moving quickly to restock the 51s, rather than leaving them denuded by injuries in the major leagues.

Caleb Smith is one of those lefties that we would've stacked a bunch of righthanders against, but Wright, Rivera, Céspedes, Frazier, d'Arnaud, Plawecki, and Lagares ain't cooperatin'. Go, healthy guys!

Currently leading 4-0 over The Sacramento River Cats, The Las Vegas 51s are looking to get back onto the winning track after losing the last three of a four-game set to Tacoma. A lot of new faces have been brought in recently by the organization, but the problem remains mostly starting pitching. Yesterday they tried a bucket brigade game, with three relievers (Logan Taylor, Kevin McGowan, and Tim Peterson) handing off to each other, but while holding the Raniers to three runs, still managed to lose, 3-1. McGowan had the best showing of the three, with one run allowed in four innings, but Taylor hit the DL after the game, so I guess it's no more starts for him. Familiar names on the Raniers include a slumming Jayson Werth (working on a minor league deal with the Mariners, former Mets hero Kirk Nieuwenhuis, and former Met-who-was-totally-in-over-his-head-with-his-girlfriend Danny Muno. One of tonight's runs came virtue of a double by Johnny Monell, who then came around to score. Monell, who was released at the end of spring training before signing with the Mets two weeks, later, is starting to look like he has the rust off, hitting .263 / .343 / .378 // .721, and has a regional chance to displace Tomás Nido as the Mets backup catcher until Kevin Plawecki is ready. Also coming on strong in recent weeks has been centerfielder Matthew den Dekker, going .368 / .413 / .471 // .884 in May. He even has 7 homers, which is uncharacteristic pop for the little dude. You know what else in uncharacteristic? Brand new pitcher Cody Martin shutting out the River Cats into the third inning. That may not sound like much, but this is a team that has dug a lot of early holes this season, trying to slug their way back into games, and usually coming up short. Go, Cody Martin! And go, Las Vegas 51s!! Bookz, Baby.

Miguel Rojas lacked the presence of mind and character of heart to run for first, even in the ninth.

On that drive to Nimmo, on the other hand, I'm not sure Céspedes even gets there in time to cut it off.

Laggy, needless to say, would have time to catch that ball with the breaks on.

Nice bid, Nimmy.

Great job, Florrie. If he was hitting at all, Reyes would be up there. Lefty-righty matchup, contact hitter, speed to stay out of double plays. But he's not hitting at all. Good call, Mick.
