  1. He's done good enough to stay in the picture, certainly. The minor problem is that the team's desire to get another look at him, combined with their desire to also get Bruce some time at first, has totally marginalized Flores the last third of the season. Due to no particularly fault of his own, Wilmer has picked a lot of splinters, after being perhaps the team's best hitter for six weeks or so in the middle of the season. In my mind, he would still (if only just) be the leader on the first base depth chart if the Mets weren't playing out the string, though he slumped in the weeks before his benching. I would guess he's going to be traded this offseason. Smith then gains the top slot unless/until they acquire a new outfielder, which would push Bruce firstwise. Bruce could see a trade as well.
  2. I thought Round Rock was pretty much a permanent affiliate with Texas, seeing as (1) Nolan Ryan is the primary owner, (2) Ryan was CEO and president of the Rangers, and (3) they are named for him. But I see that he is currently employed by the Astros. I need to keep up on my American League goings-on.
  3. Lousy game for the middle of the lineup.
  4. Mets are going to see a lot of Seranthony Diminguez in the future.
  5. Jerry wrecked things in a hurry.
  6. Blevvy making things hevvy.
  7. And the slider gets him.
  8. Interesting that they pinch-hit Wilmer instead of Reyes with the bags juiced against the sidearming righthander.
  9. He's also living something of a charmed life this evening.
  10. Matz is a titan! A paragon!! A paladin!!!
  11. Worth noting that they Greinke very nearly crapped out a half a dozen times due to an overall disengagement from his calling. Sometimes he wanted to quit to become a hitter. Sometimes he wanted to quit outright. Sometimes he loved the game so much he couldn't contain himself from doing fun-but-not-necessarily-productive things: throwing ephus pitches in crucial game situations, outwardly demanding he be included in the lineup instead of a DH, etc. His career hung for a while on the edge of a razor. Did the Royals miss a half dozen red flags in the "makeup" department? Or did they see them, boldly draft him anyway, and masterfully massage him through those periods, ultimately diagnosed as social anxiety disorder by his third big-league season?

I don't think we should look at 25 years as a monolith. But that's the point. Our "periods of success" have been less frequent and shorter in duration than more than 2/3 of all teams, putting us in the bottom tier of the league despite having top tier revenues. If we're still talking about success in scouting and development (and it suddenly doesn't seem like we are), I'm going to ask you to show your work.
  13. Unless his arm breaks in one of his two final starts, deGrom is going to get a hewj reward in arbitration. The reason why teams extend somebody in that situation is to trade some longer-term stability to him in exchange for that leverage he brings to the arbitration table, and to lock in cost-certainty during that period.

This has been a weakness for quite a long time and is a big reason why the Mets haven’t had sustained success. I think that suggests inadequate funding of that portion of operations but it could also be poor choices in who’s been doing the work. I disagree that it's been a weakness for a long time. There have certainly been periods of success and periods of failure, with more success coming on the pitching side. I don't think we should look at 25 years as a monolith.
  16. I'd go higher. [*]deGrom: Five years, $110 million [*]Syndergaard: Five years, $110 million [*]Wheeler: Four years, $60 million Or go longer and give them the mid-contract opt-out that has been so popular the last few offseasons. I think each pitcher would want 2 more years tacked on. Wheeler ain't getting no six years based on a half season of success with no free agency leverage. Who does he think is? Oliver Perez?

Later You know Mattingly is going to have everyone bunting to the left side on every pitch. Won't happen. Though I'd be delighted if it did.
  18. Jason Bay? Todd Hundley? Fernando Vina? Justin Turner? Preston Wilson? Brian Cole? Jeff McNeil? I don't know. But 25 years means you're looking at several scouting and/or development regimes.

  20. Man, with first and third, Rosario goes down flailing on three pitches, none of them close to the strike zone.
  21. Conforto up to 72 RBI. That's a Korea high!
  22. Oh, boo.
  23. And suddenly, the tying run is at the plate.
  24. Getting a lot of hard contact against Arrieta. Four-zipper.
  25. The sacrifice drive works too.
