Guillorme (who I don't think is hopeless) hits and Wheeler doubles two runs home. POW!

Yeah, there's got to be no shortage of warm glad-handing ex-ballplayers who can get their friends together for a golf tournament. That's certainly a fraction of what Rusty did, but one or more faces and a staff of a half dozen peeps to do the grant-writing and advocacy and event organization, plus an unpaid board of peeps representing Staub's legacy in New York, Houston, Detroit and New Orleans is a workable goal. Somebody just has to get the ball rolling. Today, I learned there's no Mets Radio Network and no Rusty Staub Foundation. Fuck today.

That's a God's honest fucking shame.

And finding him PT in left is as much as anything about keeping him sharp in case of any possible Alonso outages.

A 7-2 win yestereve over The Buffalo Bisons was the fourth in a row for The Syracuse Mets, in the midst of a nine-game homestand, giving them six wins in their last 10 and running their record to 11-7, good for second place in The International League North Division, only two games behind the dreaded Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Travis Taijeron must like the upstate ambience, because he has been a thundermaking maniac, hitting seven homers in his last 10 games, while going .290 / .389 / 1.000 // 1.389 over that period. I don't know if suddenly Taijeron Powers' performance has some major league applicability, but he has been exclusively a firstbaseman this season, so if you put him on the depth chart behind Alonso and Smith, that's some pretty wicked depth at the cold corner. I hate to report on the same guy two weeks in a row, but a day of 10 total bases will change your mind. After taking a spanking his first time after being activated from the DL, Zach Lee has been a guy whose turn in the rotation is something to look forward too. ZachLee-Who'm-I-S'posed-to-Be?j has hit the gas pedal his last two starts, giving up two runs in 10 innings total, walking four and striking out seven to go along with that sugary sweet 1.80 ERA. Did somebody say 1.80 ERA?! Oh, that's right! I DID!! Well, Blackjack Zach isn't the only one wearing that number on a gold chain around his neck. Recently promoted lefthanded reliever Daniel Zamora, has been unscored upon since giving up a nugget in his first appearance. He's struck out five in as many innings of work, while walking only one. In fact, after seeing his 0.60 WHIP and .118 batting average against, I kind of want to call him up a second time just to make a point. Remember that DZ — who came to the Mets in the 2017-2018 offseason in a deal for fellow lefty bullpenner Josh Smoker — had a 3.00 ERA in his nine innings of work as a peripheral Met last season. If you're curious about seeing him stick around the big club a little bit during all this intra-division play, and seeing how he can do against your Bryce Harpers, your Juan Sotos, and your Freddie Freemen, you probably aren't alone. You may be something closer to alone if you've digging on this start by the newly named Syracuse Mets, though. Next to last in International League attendance in 2018, the new affiliation, new players, new name, and strong start has only bumped them up to third-to-last this season. COME ON, PEOPLE! CATCH THE SYRACUSE METS!! BRING THE KIDDIES! BRING THE WIVES!! OR HUSBANDS, IF YOU'RE FEMALE!! OR GAY!!! Well, as a first rounder who is younger than Alonso, I'm guessing he has more value than an insurance policy. And if he gets a chance to play a little, he could well have more value on the trade market.

Dammit, the Mets need a broadcast signal that reaches all of Connecticut. By the way, last I read, the broader Mets Radio Network has been http://www.insideradio.com/free/new-york-mets-radio-network-shuttered-ed-levine-not-amused/article_810fe462-556f-11e9-9e1b-a3fca9e19938.htmlshuttered. Is this still true?

Harper's continuing his commitment to his heel role in a new uniform is admirable. It's like he's constantly setting himself up to become the redemption story that never gets past the second act. He's like a walking episode of VH-1's Behind the Music.

That green masthead on SPORT is funny. It clashes badly with Gooden's blue sleeve, and by 1986, that was the sort of thing layout artists cared about. That said, the cover gets my vote.

So, am I correctly understanding that The Rusty Staub Foundation is ceasing operations?

Well, the idea certainly isn't to find Smith more playing time at the expense of the players who are hitting the best, but rather at the expense of those who aren't: Broxton and Lagares, for starters. Maybe Nimmo and Cano, too. If he takes one start in ten from each of those four guys, he's suddenly in the lineup 50% of time and we get an idea if his improvements are for real.

Really? I mean, I've proposed more out-there schemes than that.

It's got to be as neat a little winning package the Mets have tied up this year. Opening Day and the game two in Atlanta are the only other candidates I can think of.

Call me a relic, but any day that includes two pitchers removed from the roster, to be replaced by two hitters, is a good day. Can I be the only one who'd like to see Smithtown get a little time in left again? I mean, not a whole lot, maybe two games in 10, to go with his one game in 10 at first. (It's hard to sit Alonso even that much.) I just love everything I've seen from him this year, and I'd hate to see him lose his groove from so much disuse. Let leftfield be Smithfield! On occasion!! https://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/cd488265e594adc536c5885093bd3714e752f3a3/c=0-113-2669-1621/local/-/media/2017/09/28/Bergen/NorthJersey/636421601777794558-20170927-gav-bm4-095-16695904.jpg?width=3200&height=1680&fit=crop>

Jeff McNelt is the #3 hitter on any team I manage.

Well, it might have been quick had Harper not acted like a harpy.

NA-NA-NA-NA! NA-NA-NA-NA! BRYCE HARPER! GOOD-BYE!

Keeping the line moving. Two-zip, Mets over the Arrieta.

I don't want to play in if I'm an infielder with Alonso up.

Way to dig out of trouble, Matzburger.

Todd Frazier batting 1.000.

Sounds right. He said he was a former-catcher. Also has quite the whiskey voice. Hey! Matz is getting outs and stuff!!
