When you see the names Doris Day and Rock Hudson paired, you almost automatically know you're in for light, frothy fare, but they co-starred so frequently, I think they're probably in the top five or 10 on most objective lists, right? Using only actors who appeared as romantics opposite each other in more than one role, counting returns in sequels as the same role: 1) Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn 2) Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers 3) Myrna Loy and William Powell 4) Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall 5) Doris Day and Rock Hudson 6) Marcello Mastriani and Sophia Loren 7) Um, John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara? 8) Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland? 9) Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? 10) Cary Grant and Irene Dunn? Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello? Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan? Was Joe vs. the Volcano that much of a keeper? That's a pretty straight, white, and American list, with some exceptions. Sue me all you want.

After control issues and two full seasons trying to find my way back from Tommy John surgery, I entered the 2018 season as the least among the Mets generation of exciting young starters. In fact, I was such a question mark, they had me open the season at Las Vegas, while the four from the rest of the generation joined veteran Jason Vargas in the Mets rotation. "I'm no bullpenner!" I told the Mets. "Then you're no big-leaguer!" they answered. But two things are inevitable. The first is that injuries will happen. The second is that Matt Harvey will self-destruct. So after only one start in exile, I got called back, joined the rotation, and haven't left. What was remarkable was that I just got better and better as the season progressed. Until my second half ... well, my second half was as good as deGrom's. I know deGrom had an historic season wire-to-wire, but it's just the truth. In fact, it was me, and not him, who led the majors in giving up the lowest percentage of hard-hit balls (24.8%). How's that for a hard hit to the balls? When I'm working right, I have a fastball-curve combination that hasn't been seen from a starter in Flushing since, perhaps, Dwight Gooden. That's saying a lot, I know, but it comes with its caveats. But hell, I don't have to brag about myself any more. You saw my 2018 second half yourselves. How do I follow up on that? Can I string together more than three months of Cy Young-quality pitching. Will the word "elite" ever accompany my name, or am I more of a sometimes guy? I think 2019 will go a long way toward answering these questions. In the meantime, there's you. Have at it.

A 6-4 loss to The Hamilton FisherCats left The Binghamton Rumble Ponies one game out of first in The Eastern League Eastern Division, sitting just behind the Yankee-affiliated Trenton Thunder. This is just the latest in two weeks of first-place jockeying for the two contenders, with both going 6-4 over the last 10, and unable to make a move to hold the lead on their own. With only one bad start in his last four, Harol Gonzalez has continued his career turnaround by pitching the first 6 2/3 innings of a no-hitter this week (as noted above). For his part, you can expand his current streak of hitlessness to 7 2/3 innings if you want to go back to his previous start. This has extended his record to 3-0, which is awesome when you consider he was 1-16 last season. He's struck out 30 and walked six in 25 innings, and opponents are hitting .186 off of him. And all that got him just named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. Oh, and during that no-hitter, he totally wanted to do a Noah, so he slugged two singles and plated two runs. "I always practice my hitting in the offseason," said Gonzo the Great of his first career hits and RBIs. "I play softball in the offseason sometimes so I can swing. I'm not afraid up there or anything. I just want to put the barrel on the ball, and tonight, it was good." You know who else practices his hitting in the offseason? Arismendy Alcantara. That's who. He practices it during the season as well, and it's been really paying off of late. The ex-big-leaguer was hitting .176 on May 2, doing the dumb things he had to do, and touching the puppet head. Then he stole his first base of the season, quit his job down out the car wash, leaving nobody a goodbye note, and started tearing ass in the batter's box. Since then, the multi-position player has gone .366 / .381 / .537 // .918 while stealing his four more bags, and establishing himself in the leadoff spot for Binghamton, where every mother's son wants to be. Speaking of, that Joe Zanghi continues to be quite a mother. The stocky, multi-inning right-hand reliever has been toying with the Eastern League, going scoreless over his last 9 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits in that span. With just one run allowed in 17 2/3 innings so far this season, he's been more machine than man, and that machine is starting to fast-track itself, with his stupid 0.51 ERA lowering his minor league career number to 2.28, Joey Zed will see you after school. The first-place dogfight will continue tonight as Binghamton hosts Altoona, with big lefty David Peterson taking the hill and looking for his third straight solid start. Group tickets are available. Molina went deep again last night in the second game of Columbia's double-header against the Rome Braves. He's scarcely played since 2016, he's been around a little over a week, and he's already the team's best hitter. Columbia, who swept the twin-bill, were the only team in the organization in action yesterday. St. Lucie and Binghamton were rained out, while New York and Syracuse were both enjoying a scheduled day off. That makes yesterday an organizational sweep!

http://metsminors.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Villines-3-e1533557179501.jpg> Two days off and no games to watch. Why not catch up on your HEY, NINETEEN predictin'? After all, it took this long to get to me, and the season is nearly 25% done. I'm Stephen Villines and I happen to be currently on fire. I'm a sidewinding righthander out of round 10 of the 2017 draft, and I make batters cry. In 16 2/3 2019 innings so far in Binghamton and (now) Syracuse, I've laid nothing but golden goose eggs. Not a single run allowed. That's good for a season, but my career rates are jaw dropping: Hits: 6.5 per nine; Homeruns: 0.3 per nine; Walks: 1.6 per nine Strikeouts: 12.6 Taken on their own, any one of those four figures should get your attention. Together, they're telling a story of a hell of a relief pitcher. I'm Steven Villines. And that's my story. And if I can keep that show going now in AAA, you might find yourself calling me Stevie Headlines pretty soon. Yeah, like many sidearmers not named "Walter Johnson" or "Henry Owens" or "Young Dennis Eckersley," I don't throw hard. My fastball rarely even reaches 90. But I got control of all my pitches and I'm sick of letting a radar gun determine my fate. I went unrecruited out of high school until a friend of a friend got me an audition at Kansas. After three stellar seasons, I went undrafted after my junior year. It's about time I got some respect, no? And it's about time you decide if you want a guy to light up the radar gun or a guy who gets outs. I'm Stephen Villines and I get outs. I get outs against lefties and righties. I've gotten outs all through the minors, and pretty soon, you're going to see me in the majors. What will you see when I get there? You tell me, smart guy.

Catalina, interestingly, is a font. Or a family of fonts, to be more accurate.

You're on a desert island, that remarkably has a film projector, a screen, working power, and reels and reels of old Doris Day films. You don't want to spend too much time with Doris, what with you needing devote most of every day to survival and pursuing rescue, but when you need to rest at night, you're not above cranking up the projector. What's going to be your go-to film?

https://www.oursportscentral.com/graphics/pictures/lg20190503-289486.jpg?w=600> You may not have gotten a New York Mets game yesterday, but if you tuned in to the Syracuse Mets battling the Columbus Clippers, you were in for a treat, as Corey Oswalt threw six one-hit innings before turning the game over to Tim Peterson for two innings and Arquimedes Caminero for the final frame. Together, those two bullpenners threw hitless ball, treating Columbus mothers to a two-hour, 12-minute one-hitter. Dilson Herrera homered and Tim Tebow got picked off, and all-in-all, it was what God made Mother's Day for. The win helped the Mets hold off the hard-charging Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders and maintain Syracuse's hold on first place in the International League North Division. Beating the Clippers, who had been a Yankees affiliate for 26 seasons up to 2006, and holding off the RailRiders, the Bombers current AAA team, it felt like beating the Yankees twice. Of 37 guys who've appeared in a game for the Syracuse squad this year, 30 have MLB experience. This is the veteran club of veteran clubs. But few have the sort of stellar career as two-time MLB All-Star Carlos Gómez. CarGo Shorts got off to a slow start with Syracuse this season, but has really turned it on in recent weeks, has been hitting third in Tony DeFrancesco's lineup, and is not such a bad bet to be joining the Flushing Mets soon, if they can figure out first how to fit Jed Lowrie onto the roster. Gómez hasn't really been a star since 2014, but in the last 10 games, the former Met has hit .395 / .460 / .767 // 1.227 over his last 11 games, and that's the sort of trend that gets management's notice. Apart from the regular good news about Oswalt and Drew Gagnon, Zack Lee has been stepping it up of late. Lee Jeans has allowed three runs in 13 innings his last two starts, striking out 12 while walking three. He remains undefeated at 2-0. The real emerging story in the pitching staff may be Stephen Villines, recently promoted from Binghamton. The sidearmer, who you may have seen in Spring Training, has been The Man Without an ERA this season, following his 12 2/3 worth of scoreless innings with Binghamton with another four innings (so far) with the ‘Cuse. In 110 2/3 career innings, White Villines has struck out 155, walked only 20, and allowed all of four home runs. That's a guy you want to make room for. (Though I see red flag when I see him retweeting content from Barstool Sports. C'mon!) And make room on your calendars for the SyraKoos team's next matchup, hosting the Louisville Bats Tuesday night with the always-intimidating TBD on the hill. Don't eat before the game. Remember, it's Taco Tuesday. Bet! Bet! Bet!

It's a mini-sweep.

https://cdn.newsday.com/polopoly_fs/1.29772177.1555223521!/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_768/image.jpg> Hello, I'm Jason Vargas. And in the long tradition of Mets dating back to Rod Gaspar and plowing on through to a little somebody name ... Jeff McNeil ... I'm a Long Beach State Dirtbag. I was developed and picked by the Marlins. But the Mets coveted me and Omar Minaya — who usually preferred a hot, young, live arm to a guy who has demonstrated a successful approach — went against his own values and traded hot young arms Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens for me and a guy named Adam Bostick, who, um, wasn't particularly good. So the Mets send off two arms for two pitchers. Omar totally went against his own instincts, and it worked! Lindstrom had a decent career as an itinerant reliever, and Owens blew out his shoulder. I'm not great, but I did a lot better than either of those guys! But Minaya was Minaya, so I only got two starts with the Mets before they unloaded me in the massive — and massively incoherent — J.J. Putz trade. Omar didn't know what he had, and so he won that first trade, but it only became clear after he got an enormous swirly on the second. So, 15.7 WAR later, I came back to the Mets, and 10 minutes later, so did Omar Minaya. Weird, right? And like my first tenure with the Mets, I stunk. I stunk like a messy diaper left out the sun on the top of a waste receptacle. And put a rotten fermented banana on top of that. Throw some used coffee grounds in there too. But back for more I have come. And though I've mostly pitched better of late — and since I don't know how to tell you this, but here goes — I have a higher overall ERA than last year. I'm on the DL ... again. When I come back, there is reason to hopeful, but there is also reason to be scared. And there is totally a good reason to be psyched if your name is Drew Gagnon. So, this is going to play out any number of ways going forward. Perhaps you know. If you do, could you please step forward, state your name and your affiliation, and tell us what you see.

Good one!

No Noah clairvoyance?

And he just hit his first professional State-side homer last night.

The only time I feel alright.
