  1. Cumulative totals like fWAR refWARd both health and longevity. Also, depending on how aggressively you weight them, including post-season performances might push Murphing USA into third.
  2. Whether a decade starts with year ending in 0 or 1 will always be debatable, but they are generally defined by their 10s place. So in that spirit, it's the last day of the decade, which — why not? — invites a look over the shoulder. I was unsure how to format the teams. I ranked evahbody by fWAR, and I was going to go with a typical 25-man roster of 12-ish pitchers and 13-ish hitters, but that left us without a backup catcher, and I was surprised how quickly the relievers were falling off even at seven (Takahashi?). So I made it a 12-man staff, but included full first- and second-team selections on offense. Yeah, it's arbitrary, but it's not like there's money involved. Intrestingly, over the last decade, the team seems most wanting in center and at catcher (despite d'Arnaud's 100% stealing rate), which is kind of where they are most wanting right now. 3. He's still somebody to love.
  4. Yeah, he's looking sweeter than Marty Balin's ass, this guy. Good pick. Best part is that the 2.38 ERA is actually the highest of his career. As a 17-year-old with the DSL Mets 2, he notched a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings. He returned to DSL2 as an 18-year-old, improving to a 1.69 figure in 32 innings. They bumped him up to at the end of the season to start at DSL1 (the same division but a higher standard of play), and he dropped to 1.42 in 25 1/3 innings. He gets to skip the Gulf Coast League and it doesn't matter because you see above how he killed it in the Appy League. His WHIPs are so low, I won't publish them, because they'd freak you out as if logic and proportion have fallen slowly dead.

Well, that may be his play, but ... while I think it's always smart to bet that rich people have a way to stay rich and get richer, it's not necessarily as sure a thing to say that they aren't idiots. When it comes to American sports owners, I think that the incidence of brightness seems to fall somewhere around maybe 38%.
  6. http://metsminors.net/mets-minors-offseason-news-and-notes/Luis Guillorme has pulled a rare feat, not only winning the BSoHL Trophy, which is an award that should be given (but isn't) to the first Met of each offseason to be declared by an allegedly objective observer to be in the best shape of his life, but has stunned observers by achieving this status before the New Year. While the record gets blurrier the further back we go, no Met that we know of has ever been reported as being in the BSoHL before Christmas. There is some talk of a Met or two filing a protest. I don't want to say whom, but one of their names rhymes with Scram Taggerty. The argument is sort of along the line of "Sure he's in his best shape, but that's pretty easy for him, as the guy has looked like a gummy bear for two or three years now." While we have to admit that this argument isn't without merit (similar arguments were made by Chris Woodward when Heath Bell walked off with the 2005 trophy), unless the appeal leads to a reversal, this year's BSoHL crown goes to Guillorme. Congratulations, Luis. http://metsminors.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/luis-guillorme-e1523835016867.jpg>
  7. Cool. The main discrepancy I see between their projections and ours is that they have Walker Lockett making the bullpen and Mets Roster Central gives that last spot to Sewald, who is out of options, has more bullpen experience, and (believe it or not) has a clearly better big league track record. They also predict Céspedes opens the season on the Injured List, which is hardly a stretch. They give his roster spot to Luis Guillorme, who is already being publicized as being in the "best shape of his life." Stockholm is working on a permanent page for the CPF Roster so we don't have to scroll through a million guys every time there is an update.
  8. So, where's your son sleeping, now?

  11. Best of luck to Chris Mazza as he joins the all-singing, all-dancing, all-loving, all-karate-kicking organization of The Boston Red Sox! Matt Kemp, it's like we never saw you at all. 12. I bet they can get Mo Vaughn for him. My prediction is something akin to Moisés Alou's Met days. Partial season, still able to wreck it with the bat, but looking at all times like a guy who shouldn't be on his feet. 70 games, .291 10 homers, 33 RBI. If they're going to trade him, I don't necessarily mind selling low. As much damage as the guy can do, I have more confidence right now in Dominic Davis as my left fielder. It'll be like Shamsky and Swoboda in right in 1969 with Marisnick playing the part of Gaspar. Or something.
  13. Was darn good in the minors last season, and only mostly bad in the majors. That still qualified him as the #5 starter at the top of the offseason. In recent weeks, he fell to sixth, then seventh, then 11th. Good news for Walker Lockett and Franklyn Kilome. I expect him to win 16 games with Boston. Get that waiver money over here pronto.
  14. I heart the way his rear leg is hooked in front of the text while his front leg sits behind. It's Euclidically possible, but it sure strains my groin and hammies just to think about it.
  15. I'm probably wrong, but I feel like he dominated the Mets the first few years of his career, but the script was flipped the last few years. He's looked done every year for maybe four years, but he usually nonetheless has been able to grind it out and have decent numbers by the end of the season.
  16. Western embroidered shirts = back page gold.
  17. Two outstanding pictures. I'm going with BotM based on my personal bias for night game shots, deeper saturation, and outlining. Also, the "mops" thing is a nice variation on a cliche.
  18. Szapucki was born in Tom's River, but he went to High School in Florida, so I guess he's got MLBS potential. Zamora, of course, colleged at Stony Brook.
  19. I realize that reporters love to drum up a bitter soap opera, but you have to really be straining hard to read a motivational insult out of what BVW is quoted as saying.
  20. Dylan has seen a lot mutations. It's is starting to be the Welsh version of what Séan is to Irish names.
  21. Still awaiting word on Chris Mazza. I imagine if he was put on waivers, he's passed through by now. But there is some buzz that he might become the fourth 2019 Met to jump to the KBO. 22. Yeah, that point shouldn't be lost. And it takes Wheeler twice as long as other guys to return from injury.
  23. I have no good reason for feeling this way, but feel like Bumgarner is at the end of his run. I kind of associate San Francisco pitchers with breaking down mid career. Tim Lincecum went south at 28. Johnny Cueto has mostly fallen off the map. Matt Cain was farty after 27. Barry Zito mostly lost it the minute he came to San Francisco. Obviously these are only related at the most specious level, but that's the impression I tend to get.
