  1. Stick around, folks. The Jauss Effect is about to kick in.
  2. Is this rock bottom? Is this David Cone Day?
  3. The Gary Thorne factor is certainly a thing that passed through my head. Keith's favorite part of analysis is deep-diving explorations of official scorer's decisions.

    Is there an Umpire Fantasy League? Perhaps you draft a team of four umps, and maybe an alternate, and you get points by how accurately your guys call the game according to published pitch data, and what percentage of calls got overturned. Bonus points for ejecting folks beefing when the calls have been good. Negative points for ejecting a guy who is beefing for credible reasons. Surely somebody has done this, right?
  5. We've certainly crossed a line, where a pitcher's arm is more of an investment and an asset to protect than a weapon to deploy. It has led to a a brutal irony, that the more effective pitcher, the more you're going to protect him, rather than the more you're going to look to him to get some wins for your team. When Tom Seaver was winning his first Cy Young in 1969, he had a few games in there where he had nothing. His arm wasn't coming back in between starts and wasn't responding to whatever crude therapy, and he was actually contemplating retirement. But the Mets kept sending him out there, he found his way back, and his legendary career went on for another 17 years. I'm not saying it's a better model or anything, but the trend is concerning. I certainly realize that it's not as concerning as deGrom hitting the Injured List or breaking down, but they're pitchers. If you look long enough, you're going to realize that all of their arms are injured in one way or another.
  6. =bmfc1 post_id=71693 time=1626577118 user_id=73] I don't think that I ever want to watch another baseball game.
  7. Today would have been a really nice time for one of those old seven-inning games they used to have.
  8. Ump missed strike three there.
  9. We've got to put more money in the Throw-a-Strike Fund.
  10. =bmfc1 post_id=71676 time=1626575947 user_id=73] Another lousy call by Marvin Hudson but at least Gary C. and Keith are amused.
  11. =bmfc1 post_id=71670 time=1626575192 user_id=73] We can't have one long, laborious but tension-free game, can we?
  12. Not the sort of orderly evacuation you like to see.
  13. Trouble, trouble, Barney Rubble.
  14. Went over 60 at-bats between strikeouts. On average. Over his career. https://www.cmgww.com/baseball/keeler/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/wee-willie-keeler1-462x540.jpg> OE: Apparently kept his love in his back pocket when he was at bat also.
  15. If McNeil keeps going against the shift like that, my heart will do what my heart's going to do.
  16. Mets got the call back at first, but I was thinking that Frazier didn't control his juggle at second until he had come across the bag.
  17. Another double play and I'm not sure the Pirates got either out.
  18. Did Thorne just call Nimmo "Noah"?
  19. My fantasy umpire team would have tossed Nogowski for throwing his bat like that.
  20. Gary Thorne is part of my Mets history and part of my modest Orioles history, but man, he's blowing calls all over the place. He was, very interestingly, discussing earlier how broadcasters are doing such a good job calling games off of monitors that teams are possibly reluctant to put them back on the road. But went unspoken was what a poor example he was of this.
  21. Hey, Megill just made it through five. As pitcher of record, too.
