  2. Running things and owning things aren't always the same thing and how things proceed following the death of Freddie may come down to factors such as what the 'Estate Tax' situation is at the time. Some folks in power now are in favor of either eliminating or severely curtailing such laws based on the premise that it's nothing more than re-taxing of money that has already been taxed while others see it as a way of discouraging passed-along wealth. If such taxes are high they can make it tough if not impossible for an asset like a sports team to passed down*. Now obviously the state of the team, of MLB, and of the Wilpon family at the time will have the most say in what goes on, but at some point Jeff (and presumably his siblings) may be forced to part with it no matter whose name is atop the masthead. * IIRC the family of Joe Robbie ran into this situation. Robbie was a self-made Lebanese immigrant who both bought the Miami Dolphins (plus several other teams) and also 'Joe Robbie Stadium (later called something different seemingly every year). But despite being one of the few who "did it the right way" by building the stadium entirely with private money his children (he had a bunch IIRC) were forced to sell because of the estate and personal taxes.

No reason why Verrett, Clip-art, and now Robles couldn't have worked a second inning. Verrett - 1 inning (3 outs) 6 pitches Robles - 3 outs, 20 pitches Clippard - 3 outs, 13 pitches Really only Robles had a tough inning (and gave up a run).

  6. Bumgarner is starting to make a late season push. Speaking of which, anybody check out his last two games, the one on Sunday and then last night's as well? Sunday: CG, 3 H shutout w/1 BB & 14 Ks vs the Nats. Oh yeah and he also HR'd (his 4th of the season!!), 2B'd, scored twice and knocked in 2 Tuesday: Obviously not his night to pitch, so Bochy goes to him as his first guy off the bench to PH in the 7th inning with the Giants leading 1-0. One out/bases empty, he raps a single to LF and later comes around with the 2nd run of the game that the Giants went on to win 2-0 in StL. Bochy: "Yeah Cards, you may have the best record in MLB and the self-proclaimed best fans. But just because it's a tight game in your house doesn't mean I have to use real hitters against your guy who's got a 3-hitter going. Nope, I'll save them for later after we add to our lead here just to remind you who the REIGNING CHAMPS are."
  7. I went to one of the first (think it was THE first actually) NYM/Balt inter-league series weekend at Camden a bunch of years back. Two games back to back IIRC. The locals -- not just at the park but also waitresses, cabbies, hotel folk, etc. -- seemed both surprised and a bit overwhelmed by the number of Met fans in for the weekend but also agreed we were much better "invaders" than were Yanqui fans.
  8. From what I've heard Dombrowski offered to keep Cherrington around but he chose to leave, something that's probably not all that unusual a move. BoSox have certainly had an odd ride the last couple of years 2012 - 69 wins, last place 2013 - 97 and a WS 2014 - 71, last place 2015 - on pace for 72 and last place
  9. Kang is also coming on strong. Grichuk was just DL'd Pederson has much of his accumulation from the first half of the season
  10. Niese - 2.0 Robles - 1.5 Familia - 0.5 Clippard - 0.5 CTorres - 0.5 Uribe - 1.5 Conforto - 2.0 Cespedes - 1.0
  11. Colon - 4.0 Familia - 0.5 Clippard - 0.5 Lagares - 1.0 Cespedes - 2.0 Murphy - 1.0
  12. deGrom - 4.5 Granderson - 3.0 Murphy - 2.0 Flores - 0.5
  13. Probably still Greinke in the lead, but the gap may be shrinking. 15. That was a called strike AND a swinging strike. Fortunately a GO on the next pitch.
  16. And now we HAND THEM the tying run in scoring position!!! They haven't hit a ball hard this entire inning.
  17. You gotta be kidding me!!! The one freakin' thing you didn't want to do there was load the bases and bring the tying run up ... in THIS park especially. oe: and then bring the Winning run up.
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'm glad Clippard is staying in, but it's only because of those extra two runs. Managing to the save rule is stupid. And now a new save situation appears and, just like that, so does Familia.

  20. Aren't you glad I told all you folks what a good defensive player Jonathan Schoop was? Two official errors tonight plus the dropped relay throw which wasn't scored as one but where they probably would have had a play at the plate had he not fumbled it.
  21. Nats having their problems out in Colorado. Jordan Zimmermannnn was given a 2-run lead before he even took the mound but gave it back immediately and is now down 4-2 in the 3rd.
  22. Now that's a decent start.
