  1. This game was starting to have a body count. Donaldson & Bautista on the Toronto side and Beltre for Texas all walked off the field mid-game with some assorted owwie or another. Beltre's (back) looked most serious. Bautista was reported as a tight hammy while Donaldson took a knee to the cranium and needed to be checked out.
  2. Looking at that Toronto (and, remember, you don't pronounce the second t) lineup: On the team one year ago? Revere - Nope Donaldson - Nope Tulowitski - Nope Smoak - Nope Martin - Nope Goins & Pillar - yes, although in backup roles Price - Nope So that essentially leaves the two big boys in the middle there - Encarnacion & Bautista - as leftovers from 2014. It seems like the Jays had their big makeover 2 or 3 years back (the Dickey deal, the big one with the Marlins) but it's really been more like one long continuous shuffle.
  3. On Tuesday October 14, 2003, the Cubs had a 3 games to 2 lead and a 3-0 lead with one out in the 8th inning of Game 6 of the NLCS. Then a pop-up near the stands wasn't caught by Moises Alou. [u:15gjygy3]12 pitches later[/u:15gjygy3] (20 if you include 2 IWs) 8 runs were scored and the Cubs went on to lose the game. They lost the next night too and then the next six post-season games that they played. Tonight breaks the streak of eight consecutive playoff losses.

  5. BAM! That was probably their last best chance. Pirates didn't have to tie it up just then but they needed something.
  6. Stop booing Pirates fans, you need the baserunners.
  7. Bob Costas was floating an idea recently where the WC round would be expanded to 2-of-3 (complete with Day/Night DHs and all home games for the better team) plus see the 1st round bumped up to a 4-of-7 -- but admitted the whole thing would have to be paired with a regular season reduction. One of these years MLB is going to get bitten by pushing the WS into late October and/or early November and the above changes would only push it further. I think Selig viewed the future as one where every team (or at least all the potential cold weather sites) had a domed stadium but not everybody is as good at sweet-talking cities out of money as you were Buddy boy.
  8. Having a wild celebration for winning the one-game WC seems like a bit of overkill just days (sometimes ONE day) after having a celebration for clinching that WC spot.
  9. There is virtually no way to have everything work out "fair" once you start letting non-winners (Wild Card entries) into end-of-year playoff tournaments - and even divisional set-ups produce skewed results (1973 NL anyone?). How the gripe manifests itself might vary from year to year but there's usually going to be one.
  10. deGrom - 3.5 Colon - 0.8 Verrett - 0.8 Clippard - 0.8 Familia - 0.8 Niese - 0.3 Reed - 0.2 Granderson - 2.8
  11. Harvey - 4.0 Goeddel - 0.5 CTorres - 0.5
  12. Well at least the Yanx have numerous large contracts coming off their payroll heading into next season. Oh wait, hey have no large contracts coming off their payroll heading into next season! Only Stephen Drew & Chris Young at $5mil each, and Young they kind of need and might re-sign at a raise.
  13. Syndergaard - 4.0 Lagares - 1.0 Duda - 0.5 d'Arnaud - 0.5
  14. MLB said they "were surprised" to find out that partner (MLB has minority ownership stake) 'Draft Kings' allowed their employees to win money in their leagues. Really?
  15. Isn't Stroh's a Pennsylvania beer? I've always been under the impression that Shiner Bock is the quintessential Houston brew. (Shiner, TX is about halfway between Houston and San Antonio)

  17. Gotta love the in-stadium booing of the home team. Spoiled children acting as if they were denied their birth right.
  18. Can't say I'm loving it that Houston pulls Keuchel after just 6 IP (and if you've ever pulled your Keuchel you know how painful that can be)

  20. And the Yanx go to the pen w/LHR Justin Wilson in to start the 6th. Even with the 2 HRs, I can't think Houston is too sad to see Tanaka go.

  22. Chris Archer is a 26 y/o jock essentially making his TV debut in this game and yet he already speaks better and more clearly than half the sports announcers currently in the employ of networks.
  23. HahnSolo wrote: I hope Carlos didn't bother Girardi and break some unwritten rule by hitting that ball about 450 feet I was wondering what McCann was thinking. He and Gomez got into a beef over that back when McCann was still w/Atlanta.
  24. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I think my analogies work. I mean marijuana's illegal. And heroin. And cocaine. But cigarettes are legal? Isn't that enough "selective legality" for you? No, because I don't view cigarettes and heroin as remotely analogous therefore I don't find different laws applying to them to be simply arbitrary. But there's no such Mo Vaughn sized gap between betting on sports (almost universally illegal in this country) vs betting on fantasy sports (legal). Nor are the distinctions from above as tortured as the logic that says fantasy sports betting needs to be allowed because it's a skill not a mere game of chance but yet lotteries which are pure chance are not only allowed by the gov't but run by it and games with at least as much skill as fantasy like poker and such remain mostly banned.
  25. Good thing for Colby Rasmus that he can hit HRs because ... how do I put this -- he's not a handsome man.
