  1. 1B - Brandon Belt has turned into the player the Giants long hoped for, he's currently hitting .303/.402/.513 - and was recently rewarded with a 5-year contract for his efforts.
  2. Way to dump a huge steaming turd on your team's best stretch of the young season as this news comes right on the heels of the Marlins' four-game sweep of the Dodgers. That he's not a power guy and grew up both in the game and well off kills all the usual excuses about being poor and desperate and hungry, yadda yadda. In addition to dad (and longtime pitcher) Tom, brother Nick, drafted 5th overall in June '14 and currently working his way through the Twins system (Fl St Lg), now has a guilt by association taint on his head. News appeared to come about 1:00 in the morning which may mean that Minaya is behind it all.
  3. Yeah, a bit of a 'WTF' face on Papelbon when that ball fell.
  4. Centerfield wrote: Some interesting things going on so far in this early season: 2. Philadelphia looks to be better than anyone expected. They definitely have some pitching. Maybe some bats too. I think both Philly and Miami will be pesky this year. Atlanta looks worse than expected. Which I didn't think was possible. Just completed a sweep of the Nats, including back-to-back 3-0 shutouts. (3 runs allowed the whole series) Always nice to gain ground on an off day.
  5. As Andrew Zimbalist -- an economist who has written extensively about this subject -- has often said, 'if funding stadium construction was profitable then these team owners would be tripping over each other in order to build them themselves'. And, yet, they never do.
  6. Arrieta's shot at 'the Van der Meer' went out the window with a leadoff single today in Chicago. Also walked two in that opening inning to load 'em up for Kirk Nieuwenhuis ... who K'd on a full count to end the frame with no runs scored.
  7. Yeah, the outfielders weren't playing high enough. [2 HRs, 1 3B, 2 2Bs -- most of it in one inning]
  8. Creepy in concept but not in execution. at least not so far
  9. Niese was handed a 7-0 lead last night but immediately gave 4 of those runs back and only lasted thru 5, eventually getting a ND in a game the Pirates won in the 12th. Now granted it was in Colorado, but it seems like that's a movie we sat through a couple of times already. He's still 3-0 this season but with an ERA just north of 5.00, nearly 1.5 baserunners per inning, and a league leading 7 HRs/allowed.
  10. I know it famously happened during Ruth's era, where he out-HR'd entire teams for the season. But I wonder when that last happened? I remember the '86 Cards not reaching Maris's 61 mark in round-trippers but of course those didn't come in the same season. Still way too early to put on death watch on this one, but the Braves as a team are currently tied at 4 with 12 different NL players, are trailing 19 others, and are being doubled or more by five of those 19: Rizzo at 8. Harper, Walker, Arenado, & Story at 9 each
  11. Nats currently best in NL at run prevention at 2.6 RA/G, exactly 0.4 R/G better than the 3rd-best Mets (3.0) On the scoring side, the 8th-best Mets are exactly 0.3 RS/G better than the 9th place Nats: 4.4 vs 4.1 ... so all that's kind of even so far. Two ways to look at how the Nats are pitching to date: - One is that their worst starter so far has been Max Scherzer and you figure that he'll manage to lower that 4.35 ERA sooner or later. - On the flip side, they're probably not likely to continue to get a minuscule ERA from Joe Ross (0.54), or even as low as they're currently getting from Tanner Roark (2.63) & Gio Gonzalez (1.42)
  12. It's only the second for the entire team since opening day. 2 HRs on OD (Freeman & Garcia), 1 in game 5 (Stubbs), and then Freeman's last night.
  13. TransMonk wrote: Have I mentioned lately how much I hate off days? Buck up cowboy, 17 games in a row after today.
  14. The Braves (specifically Freddie Freeman) hit a HR last night. The solo shot in the 8th inning of a game where they were already down 8-2 was their first in 15 games. The loss dropped them to 4-17. It was the 2nd of the year for FFF who now has half of the team's season total.
  15. I'm concerned about team-wide .194 with RISP. That's the type of thing I don't worry about because stats like that are usually not sustainable. The overall BA is just a tick below league average (literally one tick: .244 vs .255) so it's not like they're constructed strictly as a low-BA/feast or famine kind of offense.
  16. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: 4. I guess I was shocked and not shocked with the Cespedes HR. For one thing the on-deck circle -- and scoreboard (is that legal?) showed Doodoo as the PH. Couldn't tell whether the ball cleared the line at first so there was a moment where nobody knew. The scoreboard "home run" graphics began, that's how everyone found out. Duda was assumed to be the PH because he was in the on-deck circle but, as he never approached the plate or was announced as such, Terry was able to pull the old switcheroo. It wasn't apparent to the booth guys either whether or not Duda had been announced, but the fact that he later came in on defense was the final answer.
  17. And this doesn't even really have anything to do with Verrett. 1) unless this shoulder woe develops into something career threatening (or at least catcher-threatening) they're not going to go out catcher shopping based on a 15-day DL stint. 2) and if this does turn out to be something serious, the Mets are going to respond by pushing their chips in on Plawecki. At some point NYM mgmt is going to have to decide between one of these two guys. But the good thing about having two young promising catchers is that you don't have to make a panic move if/when one of them goes down, especially not short term.
  18. Ashie62 wrote: And Logan Verrett becomes trade bait for a reliable catcher. No he doesn't
  19. So that's a game and a half picked up on the Nats since last night: the 3-1/2 game deficit at the end of Sunday and that ridiculous win by the Nats is now down to 2
  20. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: Comforts is a bad ass. Does he qualify as a rookie this year, or did he play too much last season. I know Matz qualifies. No RoY status for Conforto this year. Used it all up last season. MVP on the other hand ...
  21. Zvon wrote: Franco just drove in the go ahead run in Philly. Crushed a drive to center but took a bad spill rounding first and is hurt. Phils lead Nats by a run in the 7th, 4-3. Phillies are trying REALLY hard to lose that game but are managing to win (so far) regardless. 9 hits + 4 walks (mostly thx to Scherzer) but several dumb base-running plays and other acts of dumbth have them hanging on by their tingerfips (4-3 in the 8th).
  22. Not just the first AB but the first Pitch Y.C. sees in four days goes over the fence-a-rooni.
  23. Centerfield wrote: He hasn't been right since he came off the DL last year. He's doing that Julio Franco nonsense and his swing looks like shit. He was hitting fine post-DL last year: .262/.349/.475 in Aug & Sept w/8 HRs and 19 XBHs. Give me that pace for a whole season (even just 450 ABs) and we're talking around 20 HRs and close to 50 XBH which is something I'll take any season from my backstop. Much slower start this season obviously but also a bit better as of late. The throwing woes and now the shoulder ... those are problems.
  24. Lefty Specialist wrote: Boy, the NL cleaves very easily into the haves and have-nots, doesn't it? Well there are a lot of .500-ish teams that could join one faction or the other as the year moves on. Although, not that I put a lot of stock in 'Power Rankings', the one over on BP certainly contributes to the split league theory. -- On their list for this week, five of the top six teams in baseball are NL clubs [Cubs, Nats, Dodgers, **White Sox**, Mets, Cards] while, at the same time, ALL of the bottom five are NLers also [Padres, Phils, Reds, Brewers, Braves]
  25. Mets have had the leadoff man on in virtually every inning but nothing pushed across. Being limited to one hit tends to do that to a team.
