  3. Yeah there were some bad breaks involved ... right up until the bases-loaded walk and the bases-clearing triple.
  4. 7:10 PM - or whenever the pre-game hoopla ends. Hopefully the 16'ers will give the visiting 86'ers a good show. Noah Syndergaard vs the 28 y/o Japanese rookie Kenta Maeda - the only RHP we'll see for a four game span. Maeda yielded just 1 run combined over his first five starts in MLB, but has allowed 4 runs in four of his most recent five including 3 losses and 2 NDs. Doesn't tend to last too long in games either so we may be testing their bullpen depth again tonight.
  5. NYM CAREER HRs Wright projected to end the season -- 259.12 1) Darryl Strawberry -- 252 2) David Wright -- 242 Wright at start of year -- 235 3) Mike Piazza -- 220 4) Howard Johnson -- 192 5) Dave Kingman -- 154

  7. I know that's a tradition on the Nats where Asdrubal played for a time in 2014. Not sure if he was the guy who brought that act to that team or if he just carried it off from there (or maybe both).

  9. Yeah that's the problem, first the bunt has to be successful (questionable since HoJo whiffed on his first attempt) and then the same stuff has to happen subsequently. I remember Scully going on assuming that the A-B-C progression was a sure thing and therefore Davey's strategy cost them the game and therefore the series. Maybe, but hardly a sure thing; hitters pop-up bunts, K trying to bunt, bunt into force plays, bunt into double plays, etc. all the time. Mookie Had bunted the previous play which would have been a force out at 2nd but for a Rich Gedman high throw/error. I suspect Davey figured that, had he left the 21 y/o rookie call-up who was 5 for 30 in his ML career to that point in to hit, it's a sure signal to Boston that it's bunt all the way and he at least wanted the option of making their defense guess and/or taking it off after one strike.

He hadn't pitched for a week and only pitched 2/3ds of the 8th but Terry has roles for his bullpen. Now he's lost Familia for tomorrow when he might really be needed. Reed's spot in the lineup came up in bottom 8 so he had been PH'd for. I would have gone to a non-Familia choice there: Robles, Henderson, somebody, but wouldn't have had Reed hit just so he could pitch the 9th. And now Reed is available to close on Saturday so maybe it all works out.
  11. A loss there would have REALLY sucked.
  12. Familia owes Grandy a week's worth of dinners for that one!! First walk-off of the season for us, no?
  13. Have a night Juan Lagares!!
  14. Stephen Piscotty Grand-Slammed Scherzer in the 3rd inning. 5-1 Cards, heading to bottom 6th Only 3 hits by the Cards but also 4 walks off Scherzer and, y'know, that little grand slam thingie.

  17. As Rocky Balboa said to Clubber Lang: 'You ain't so bad!'

No. Vin made it clear he was pro-bunt in that situation and, like most bunt advocates, talks about the decision to do so as if its success was 100% guaranteed. In his criticism of the move he neglected to mention that HoJo DID try to bunt at the first pitch and looked miserable doing so. About his subsequent statements over a mic he didn't realize was live? Not sure. I don't remember it but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

  20. Other plays you may have forgotten about from that game ... how 'bout Davey PH-ing for Raffy Santana in the 5th inning! The bottom of the 5th started w/the Mets down 2-0, but a walk, SB, and 2 singles (first NYM hits of the game) had plated a run and set-up 1st & 3rd w/no outs. With the 8-slot up and the pitcher on deck, Davey decided it was time to go run-hunting. PH'er Heep did get the tying run in although did so with a GiDP which effectively killed off the big inning Davey was pining for. What allowed Johnson to pull that off of course was the late addition of September call-up Kevin Elster to the active roster in that season of the "optional" 24-man squad. Inserted into the game to start the 6th, Elster wound up muffing the only ball hit to him (a subsequent GiDP bailed him out) and FO'd in his only AB before he was PH'd for by HoJo in the 9th in the much-discussed 'bunt or no bunt?' AB (first he tried, then he didn't, and eventually K'd). An inning later that batting slot was famously on-deck during the E-3 play. And all this goes back to the fact that Knight started at 3rd that night rather than HoJo after Ray had thrown a fit when Davey had tabbed HoJo to start vs Clemens in Game 2. Knight made good on his 'Don't sit me vs RHPs' rant by notching the 1st NYM RBI hit of the game (off Clemens) and also the final RBI hit of the game (the first of the three 10th inning runs), that one off Schiraldi.

Broken wrist, at least 3-4 weeks for a team that was struggling with him So the fielding crash between Gordon & 3B Mike Moustakas which broke Gordon's wrist has now claimed another victim. Moustakas, who was previously thought to have just a sore knee, in fact has a torn ACL and will likely miss the remainder of the season. THAT was one costly foul ball (especially since the crash knocked the ball loose and they didn't even get the out).

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: There's that extraordinary clip of Wright and Harvey encountering one another on the field following Harvey's bullshit drama that nearly cost us that 8-7 game last September that says more than a 1,000 Mike Vaccaro columns could. Looking... bam https://vine.co/v/eT3TdV0lIIB Remind me what the drama was involving that game. Harvey's final pitch that night was a bases-loaded single which wound up scoring four runs because of a tacked-on error which made the score 7-1 Nats. Minus context that brief clip, while not exactly warm & fuzzy, doesn't say much.
  23. Zvon wrote: 99% of Mets fans don't care if Harvey talks to the press or not after what he has gone though recently. It's concerning but we don't hold it against him. No, but his teammates care and don't appreciate being left to talk about his bad night because he refused to. And when those guys who buy their ink by the barrel start writing about how Harvey is coping with this mess, not only are they going to be predisposed to knock him for how he's handled things and made their job a PitA but they just might also get some piling-on tidbits (even if anonymous ones) from some of those same disgruntled players.
  24. I don't know ... but, for a guy who's played over 125 games in a season just twice in six seasons (2011 & '14), has one top-10 MVP placement (2nd, three seasons ago) and has like $300 billion or so left on his contract, it would not be a good thing for the Marlins if this was the early signs of him going south. I mean he's still only 26 so I don't want to overthink this yet, but the whole idea of signing him to that kind of deal to is to take advantage of his prime years which he should be in the middle of Right! Now! Instead, it seems like he may have fallen in love with his moon shots at the expense of the craft of hitting; over 1/3 of his hits this season are HRs (12 of 33) and over half (17) are for XBs. Those would be nice percentages for someone with a decent BA but not .214 from a guy who was a .270 career hitter coming into this season.
  25. d'Kong76 wrote: The Captain chimes in... As this points out, and as Ronnie said also the other night, the sin in not making oneself available to the press on those days when you are the biggest story is that it makes said player lose credibility with his teammates. That the press sometimes views issues like these as if a personal affront against them is annoying but it doesn't make them wrong in saying that it's a problem. And if the night is so bad that you feel you truly need a cooling off period then skipping the occasional time now or then wouldn't be so bad but Harvey was still pulling the silent act the next day too.
